Seo Hye-Jin (Jung Ryeo-Won) has worked as a Korean language teacher at a private educational institute in the Daechi-neighborhood of Gangnam for the past 14 years. The neighborhood is known as the most competitive private education area in the nation. Recently, Seo Hye-Jin has agonized over her future post-teaching career and her past dream. At that time, her ex-student Lee Joon-Ho (Wi Ha-Jun) appears in front of her for the first time in 10 years. When Seo Hye-Jin taught him, she did her best to teach him and he made it into a prestigious university. That helped give her fame as an instructor. Lee Joon-Ho quit working for a big company and begins work as a rookie instructor at the same private educational where Seo Hye-Jin teaches.

okja3000 May 01 2025 12:33 pm I've been a huge An Pan-Seok fan since "Something in the Rain" and was glad to see him back in action after 5ish years. If you like his work you know what's coming: a mature, slow burn story with lots of character development and "world building". As usual it feels like a late 60s/early 70s art house film (think Neil Simon and/or Harold Pinter) was transported to modern Korea and stretched out for 16 hours. Call it "My Dinner with Ahn-Drae".

It does suffer from the one flaw his other work has in the past: the soundtrack. Whereas "One Spring Night" used the same 3 songs over and over it was bearable (because Rachel Yamagata). In this one you get a bunch of oddly boomer-ish Simon and Garfunkel folk singing...plus one song that sounds like those old Mentos "fresh and full of life" commercials. Odd choice.

Otherwise it's a well paced and beautifully filmed love story that should also make Korean parents think, "are these the kind of FREAKS I leave my kid with every day?" It takes place in the Type A "Hell Joseon" kids navigate to (possibly) succeed while showing the very flawed and sefish "adults" who are supposed to be teaching them but often see them as "customers" or sheep to be herded.

The two leads are incredible (I've never seen Jung Ryeo-Won before this but she's pure amazingness) and the secondary characters are just as good. Kim Jung-Young plays against her usual "sweet relatable eomma" type and nails it in an epic display of arrogance and smarminess. Seo Jung-Yeon is Cruella DeVil or a rich weirdo from "The Hunger Games" stuck in the real world and warping students with Jedi Mind Tricks. Kim Song-Il is fantastic as a character you start off hating but grow to love. A really gifted actor with a "Korean Jimmy Stewart" vibe. Cha Kang-Yoon and Kim Na-Yeon have ridiculous potential and I look forward to seeing them in all the future shows.

The stand out (for me, anyway) of the whole thing, though: So Ju-Yeon. A truly next level actress who owns every scene she's in. Her character is a beautiful example of humanity and her performance is better than it even needs to be. She should be a FL in many, many shows after this but even as a FL's "bestie" she's everything a director could dream of. New favorite actress.

In any case: 10/10 even with the dopey music.

Amjaba Dec 14 2024 5:32 am Something in the rain is one of my favourite kdramas. So having the same director I was looking forward to this one. Firstly the cast in this are perfect. Every single one of them did their characters justice. Where it falls short is the story. There is so much they could have done with it but it fell so flat. The last episode was like they ran out of ideas and just rushed it. It was an ok kdrama with great actors.

If you want to be challenged and think a bit more about the human condition, watch nuanced performances, deliberately paced to better reflect real life, then any of the drams by this director are for you. I absolutely love being able to see these dramas and prefer to savour them rather than rush through because I need more action. To each his own. I believe dramas like this are works of art that supercede the genre in so many ways.

hihi Sep 27 2024 7:51 am Maybe the rating of the drama is not high because the content mainly revolves around education, while everyone likes romantic stories. You've been to school and work all day, no one wants to continue watching a drama about what we have to face every day. But if you can get through it, this is a good drama. The topic is new, focusing on the struggles in teaching, through which we can somewhat understand the work of professors and those who run tutoring centers. Although the drama is really long-winded, we cannot fully understand the dialogue, but I feel that the crew of this drama really learned from experts, and it is more real than romantic movies. The chemistry between the male and female leads is really good, although there is a 10-year age gap, JRW and WHJ are a beautiful couple. I will continue watching this drama with a positive feeling!

SNOW Aug 16 2024 3:53 pm I really love this Korean drama. Although it is slow-paced excecuted but in my opinion it is more suitable to present this unusual learning system just like that. It means to bring the viewers into a deeper knowlege of a complicated system of the Korean Education especially to an Australian foreigner as I am.

I always admire the hard-working of the freedom South Korea people. Fortunately I just visited Korea early this year. Getting to know more about this country in real life doesn't disappoint me at all. From its beautiful cultured Temples to the amazing modern Starfield Library in Seoul to the vibrancy of other cities and its people.

Returning to the Series "The Midnight Romance in Hagwon". It seems so real. It's just like a documentary than a fictional drama. The acting of the actors and actresses were very good. Especially Jung Ryeo-Won, her acting was superb. Her character Seo Hye-Jin is strong determent yet so vulneable. She carried out her role successfully. As a self confessed great fan of K-Dramas and Movies, I really admire this collaboration of the Writer Park Kyung-Hwa and Director An Pan-Seok.

Through this Series I'm able to know more about another facet of Korean Culture i.e the Hagwon Education System. In my opinion this Drama is one of the great Korean Dramas yet it's unfairly underated.

Dnt even knw hw many times I was thinking of dropping this kdrama but I didn't I was hoping for bettr.. For me it's kinda Boring... It's very slow..and also it's more thn 1hr . Some episds was OK to watch but the Ending... It's worst.. It's not my type of kdrama I used to watch.. So I cn understand wen people r liking it..

Rodolfo Glenton Jul 07 2024 7:21 pm Undoubtedly, one of the best works of current South Korean cinematography, on par with Extraordinary Attorney Woo. The latter thanks to Park Eun-bin's extraordinary performance.

Excellent work by director Ahn Pan-seok, who manages to coordinate efficiently and with full warmth, the various artistic and technical components, keeping the coherence of the story constant and consequently developing the character and behavior of the characters.

Worthy of mention are the outstanding performances of both leads and supporting roles, among which Jung Ryeo-won's shines splendidly; perhaps her best performance.

I mean I’m a teacher and I have 2 students graduating this year to college and even theycould take it easy??‍♀️ So basically this drama is stressful.. they make everything complicated IDK how to explain it … The couple ? their chemistry is amazing .. also the acting of FL is really goooodd finally ep 6789 are so nice but the rest are boring

Queen K Jul 05 2024 2:14 am I totally loved this drama and though I’m not Korean, I have read a lot about the pressures faced by people in different careers and how it’s affect them much to the point of suicide. It’s so painful. You can tell from their dramas that they are very disciplined career wise and put a lot of work into what they do. You can also tell they they can be very judgemental, that’s scary. Besides this, I love and admire South Korea/Koreans and look forward to visiting the country one day.

The delivery of the drama was apt. Oh, I loved it. May be because I’m around Ms. Seo’s age, that’s why I can understand their relationship. The drama is so enjoyable. I’m glad they prioritized their relationship over the situation. We all need people. Life can be really lonely, when you have someone to do life with, I regardless if who’s older, it’s easier to look forward to then next day or the next moment. Then again, if you are going through life with someone, make sure it’s the right one.

According to one article, almost 27% of teachers surveyed said they had received mental health treatment or counseling in the past five years. An online search for "South Korean Teacher suicide" will bring up stories of teacher deaths by suicide due to parent and student bullying and violence.

Per edition.cnn.com's article "Why teachers in South Korea are scared of their pupils – and their parents" a first-grade teacher, in her early 20s, was found dead in her classroom in Seoul in July 2023. Police have mentioned a problematic student and parental pressure while discussing her case... . Several more teachers have taken their own lives since July and some of these cases have reportedly been linked to school stress, according to colleagues of the deceased and bereaved families. ... Government data shows 100 public school teachers killed themselves from January 2018 to June 2023, 11 of them in the first six months of this year, but does not specify what factors contributed to their deaths.

Coupled with student suicides due to bullying or academic stress, it makes it seem like the South Korean education system needs change.

I cant seem to finish watching something in the rain..but here I am waiting for the last episode of this drama tomorrow... As a former part timer teacher in academy.. I can somehow relate to this... SK society seems to rigid and gullible about rumor within the academy.. I hope this low attitude only happens in drama..not in real life... Because teachers are human too..they need to love and be loved too...

Kels M Jun 25 2024 2:09 am If you liked Secret Affair and Something in the Rain both of which moved incredibly slow but really hit close to home with real life dynamics and relationships, you will love this drama. I echo what was said below, this drama is also really great as you age and understand life and have different experiences personally and professionally. All of these dramas are incredibly moving and immediately put you in the place of the main characters which I love. As soon as I saw the pace, i immediately knew I had watched this Directors other works. These dramas are best watched at night when I want time to slow and I can dive right in and my patience to rush isn’t as important as understanding all of the character development. It seems like a simple story but it’s done so remarkably well. The Director takes very simple stories that makes you identify with main characters as well get annoyed lol. If you thought it was boring, you might enjoy faster pace dramas, I would not recommend this one if that’s the case. I am looking forward to the last 2 episodes, can’t wait to see how this story wraps up.

wayer Jun 24 2024 9:46 am mature adult romance.. there's little comedy here only with help from the NightFlight couple ? i love their slow and progressive relationship (which is how it normally should be, it's not all about first sight and sexual tension ?) and the competition between the academias. with the addition of Mr Pyo, it is becoming even more interesting. i loved how Seo Hyejin keeps reflecting her actions... as how it should be normalized ?

InternalMessage4127 Jun 23 2024 11:10 pm This drama has me in thrall. Honestly, I have never felt so moved by any drama that I will post my opinion on it, but here we are. For anyone who loves literature in any language, this drama affirms the worthiness of reading and studying it. The writer Ms Park (and others on the team, if there's more?) so clearly reveals her view that literature is more than just a history of thoughts; rather, it is the essence of life passing down through the ages. I have been relying on the English subtitles as I don't know Korean, and though some things may be lost in translation, I can get what she's driving at because the script and the acting are just that great. Each lecture scene is so masterfully written. The dialogue is intelligent, and the actors have given voice to it so well. The characters' internal monologues are as present and palpable to the viewer (who pays attention!) as what they actually say aloud - it's some of the finest acting I have seen. I can't even say I was a fan of JRW or WHJ or the second FL before this, but I'm sold on all of them. Maybe because this series is mature and measured in tone, and the story coheres without any of those jarring tropes that sometimes derails a show midway (early on I wondered if Mr Pyo, so rigid and uptight, might commit suicide! But his character has turned out to be so fairminded and upright, yay) - there's nothing trite and nothing rings false. I have faith it will end well, and I really hope this show gets all the appreciation it truly deserves

But when you're seeking peace in your mind and an insight into a gentle relationship, you must watch this drama. Maybe one day in your life, when your world is too busy and you need to rest. This drama is a pure chicken soup for your soul.

VL Jun 23 2024 7:54 pm I guess one needs to reach a certain age when your thoughts become more matured for you to appreciate this kind of drama and storyline. It may be slow-paced and appear dull, but it is totally enjoyable for me because it depicts real life situations. Also, I am a fan of Wi Ha Joon, haha. I'm not particular fond of Jung Ryeo Won but I think she did well in this drama, I loved how she portrayed her character. For those who don't like this drama now, perhaps you can reconsider watching it a few more years later when your life experiences become more vast and rich, you may look at it in a different view.

Congratulations to the writer, the director, the technical staff and to each one of the actors. I must say that I would like to know if the drama is based on a (would like to buy it, in English please as I do not speak Korean) and last, but not least, a list of All the authors and their works, mentioned in the drama.

I love them when they're well done (the best by far was Faith in 2012 with Lee Min Ho and Hee Sun Kim; he still to this day says she was his favorite leading lady). I am halfway through and still enjoying it. Been watching the leading lady in dramas since 2005 so it was great to see her shine again in a sympathetic role here.

The admin staff at the academy keep the story moving along and bring the humor and emotions to the story more than the lead actors. Thank goodness for subtitles too. Every time I see the lyrics to the Simon & Garfunkle knock-off song, "Don't Forget About Me," I have to press mute. The song is over-used. I wish the main song was in Korean, not English.

And... Since it's about academies, cannot help but reminding me of Jeon Doyeon's last drama ? just love these noona romances lol.

There is a feel of being pinched and excited on younger male lead the student female lead each of their dramas i watched.and they have good Chemistry. Cast in Something in the Rain are also there the mom of female lead and older sister of younger male lead.. I look forward to more unforgettable scenes now that Hye Jin stayed behind Daechi Chase

The story is boring as heck, might as well call this a documentary about the education system in South Korea. I could literally fastforward every 5 minutes and still understand the storyline. FL always have a condescending look on her face towards the ML. I don't see what he sees in her other than she's a great teacher. What a waste of talent from these actors. The story is just so dry.....I can't be bothered to continue watching this. Might as well watch paint dry, it would be more interesting.

Wang May 26 2024 9:40 am One thing I love about Ahn Pan Seok's dramas is that the vibe of the dramas is highly dependent on the actors' actings. His raw cinematography and the raw audios adds layer to their actings as well. He's the perfect romance filmmaker

I can't understand why is so underrated, the plot is intersting and different than the others , showing the world of the academies in Korea versus the schools and the competitive world of the teachers and students as well. The potencial romance between the principal actors is in the air and I just want to see how is go on :) Don't miss it!

ash May 16 2024 1:27 am I dont know why people dont like this drama, I loved it! its actually a very interesting premise instead of your usual highschool romance or rich boss falling in love with poor girl plots. This is very refreshing and their chemistry is So Good so far, the way they banter and the way the whole story plays out is very refreshing.

I hope you watch it regardless of not understanding the korean education system, its just really fun and stick around because it will be so worth it!

Seeing that mother again though. . . .Although I must say, I love the way the director remains committed to a specific set of actors.

Jaisse May 13 2024 9:30 am Ryeo Won has really captivated my attention even before. Tho, I must say that this is her first ever kdrama I would binge watching as my weekend comforters. And Wi Ja Hoon, damn this guy. He's so talented at portraying a character while being in love in an older women, just like the first time I saw him in 18 again, I know he's got a lot of potential. I must say that this is rhe 2nd drama I watched of Wi JaHoon but I most definitely listing all his other dramas, just like on Ryeo Won. I merely connect with artists, and seeing their wallpaper as the series' eye catching picture, they hook me. And now I'm full blow in.

I know this drama surely not for everyone...the slow paced style of Ahn Pan Seok doesn't suit everyone's taste. But he directed it as real as it gets in the middle of the flood of makjang type drama these days. My Yoanna aka Jung Ryeo Won beauty is timeless, that's undebatable. Wi Ha Joon is handsome enough to balance Yoanna sparkling beauty...

Also i have always found jung ryeo won boring as an actress so dropping this now before i regret watching it. Although i’m a little bit curious about the story i have never watched this director’s drama so don’t know if there will be any suspense or past stories or will it be like a light hearted and feel good romance drama with lots of side character stories?

Especially this fantastic veteran actress, whom I've been watching in dramas from 2005, can absolutely pull it off as successfully as Su Jeong Im did in Melancholia. I am definitely watching this series! 2024 can't come fast enough.
