In the year 668, shortly after the fall of Goguryeo, Chil-Seong (Park Bo-Gum) is a slave, who has lost his memory and struggles to survive as a slave gladiator. He participates in a gladiator tournament for the legendary The Sword of Godumakhan. He becomes a rival to the cold-blooded warrior Kyepil Ha-Ryeok (Joo Won). Kyepil Ha-Ryeok is a participant in the gladiator tournament and represents Gokturk.
Meanwhile, Heuk Su Kang (Jung Jae-Young) is the leader of the Goguryeo restoration army and trained Chil-Seong as a real warrior. He is secretly working to restore Goguryeo. Maya (Lee Sun-Bin) is a member of Goguryeo restoration army. In-Jeong (Bibi) is Heuk Su Kang's daughter.
