Dan-Yi (Lee Shi-A) loves her hometown farming village. She arrives in Seoul to distributed farm products from her village at a good price. To make this happen, Dan-Yi begins work as a merchandiser at home shopping company "Good Morning Home Shopping."

On the other hand, Dan-Yi's niece Sam-Wol (Gil Eun-Hye) does not care for her hometown farming village. She came to Seoul to achieve a better life. She works as a show host at the same company as Dan-Yi. She has to have whatever she wants.

Notes

"The Unusual Family" takes over KBS1's Monday through Friday 20:25 time slot previously occupied by "Sweet Home, Sweet Honey" and followed by "Still Loving You" on November 28, 2016.
Lee Hyun-Jin was first cast to play Sul Dong-Tak, but quit due to health issues. Shin Ji-Hoon was then cast to play the character.

Park Min Jan 23 2023 7:36 pm Oh god! It's rough. Really rough. I checked the writer and it's the same writer as President so I expected something slightly better. At least I'm quite familiar with this sub-genre of the sub-genre of makjang so just by watching the first episode I was already prepared. It will probably won't appeal to you. These type of dramas you watch it for the cast and for its ridiculous automated nature regardless of its quality. As I expected, this drama fits very nicely in my rating of 3.5/10 of very similar other dramas like this one.

lrt Aug 23 2022 12:30 pm I enjoyed this drama mostly because I am a huge fan of Sun Woo Jae Duk!! All the sub story lines were good and just when I had enough of the crafty show host...she went away!!! I watch a lot of lengthy dramas. They are never perfect, most of the time fall apart toward the end but this one held its own. BTW the bad acting got better and as you get to know the characters... you just don't see it.

Oh KBS world of drama with the same boring plots. Why do I continue to come back and get disappointed every time ? I guess because I'm sucker for bad plots drama???

Kgyeran Jun 21 2018 12:25 pm Okay if your thinking of watching this drama hear me out. Its 149 episodes and despite that its an entertaining drama and the plot is continuously being twisted and unwinded and then twisted again, I ended up skipping around 50 episodes out of genuine "IM FED UP". Then again I have watched 100 episodes (with skips) in the period of 4 days. I dont think I wasted my time because I skipped. I watched a lot of the relationships which I really loved but to be honest some of the scenes of romance and fighting were poor in my opinion.

Overall It was a good drama. If you watched 1-2 episodes a day over a long period of time you will have it done in about 2 months. It helped me alot with my korean listening and plot was definitely different to other kdramas I have watched. The actors were amazing but there was about 6 stories being juggled throughout the drama and no offence but the whole drama with the Gonju's and gyeongcheol made me want to smash my head into a wall.

To sum it up if you have time.. Watch this drama its good!

Vina Dec 17 2017 2:42 am It was an unusually crazy ride to watch this drama till the end. Almost as unsympathetic and worth for nothing as Sweet Home Sweet Honey. It was unusual for me to cuss so much for a soap opera drama but this one got me so but at least i got sucked up to follow it through the end to see how things wrapped up

This drama series has always made me think how to end Seol Dongtak and Kang Dan yi.

The moral to this DRAMA is do not get taken by money otherwise you pay a high price in the end.

JAC Oct 30 2016 8:01 am Laurel Tree Taylor Drama Ep. 20 have so much better story that is writing than UF. The problem with UF is the writers and director have not let DanYi become a strong woman who allowed to love again.

Instead the writers and director placed this character in a hole where everyone including her own family turned on her. This gave the character a weak and pathetic role vs a mentally ill and greedy Sam-Wol who plays a confident criminal that everyone loves. But the biggest setback is the sick wealthy mother and sister who are both delusional to the core about people and money including Goo.

                  This is a drama about the DanYi and Dong Tak let's see a better Drama?

JAC Oct 24 2016 12:23 pm Professional liars and being outright over the top evil just because your family is not wealthy does not make a drama entertaining. Secrets of Women have great actors (CAST), Story, and Director, Writing is EXCELLENT.

This story never got off the ground to entertain viewers. It was a bad pill that could not be taken to heal or entertain viewers with characters who are unlikeable. Looking forward to the next Drama to replace this one!

This does not gives the writers(two women) and director, and cast the opportunity to act in a low quality behavior and standards where viewers are outright disgusted by the story.

Secrets of Women have gotten the 2016 Drama Award and the writing, casting, directing have far more entertaining then UF.

Glad to see the rating are going down for UF.

It was just the usual drama wherein the villain like Samwol is the only one with "brains" & manipulated everyone & as expected things happened her way and the lead character Danyi is the stupid & coward aunt who will only reign at the end of this drama. JEM Oct 21 2016 6:04 pm This is my first time commenting but like many of you I absolutely detest the direction this drama is going in and find many of the characters outright unlikable. I do like the woman who plays the grandmother, she is really a good actress. I also like the relationship between her daughter in law DT's father.

This drama has very high ratings in South Korea. I know many of us have a hard time comprehending that but given South Korean history I think I get it. They are a people who have been invaded and conquered over and over by people from the north (China) and also Japan. Korea was enslaved by the Japanese during WWII and many of its people were forced into slave labor while thousands of woman were forced from their homes to act as "comfort women" for the Japanese military.

When WWII was over South Korea had only a few years before they became embroiled in the Korea War. By the time that was done they had lost 80 percent of their infrastructure. In spite of all that they rebuilt their country in less then 50 years.

Now they have a madman in the North threatening to nuke them. If I lived there perhaps I would also find the lives of these characters as an escape from a threatening environment.

By the way, there is hope, it is only 149 episodes. That way it will finish on a Friday.

Situations about life is so unreal I stopped laughing especially when a mother accuses a baby of causing her son's death. How stupid is that. I know Korea holds respect high where adults are concerned and look at the niece. She's so disrespectful towards her aunty, she needs to be slapped and lock away for her bad behavior. Why?, is there only one man in the world that you try to steal your aunty's boyfriend. There's a guy that likes Samwol but, she has to have her aunty's man. Geez, what a life. I'm watching his show just to watch these characters act so stupidly toward each others and no one seems to have the brain to do something to solve and resolve issues that are so easy to handle and yet, so difficult. Dani should never allow her niece to have anything to do with the man she loves. That is why Samwol is doing her stuff because Dani give up so easily. Please Dani, have a spine and hold on to the man you love. Stop giving in to Samwol she has no care for you. Own up to your own life and go from t here don't ever look back....Get your man and be happy for once.

I do not care the comments of other viewers... why they keep on watching... if do not like it, Dan Yi sincerely loves Dong Tak though it hurts, she has no choice but to give him up. Some viewers might considered her as "dumb" or "sacrificial lamb" but she has her reasons....her rival , "the greedy" niece is the daughter of the person who raised and unconditionally love her as a mother.For me, it is a drama series worth to watch. I am hoping that in the final episode love will find a way....Dan Yi and Dong Tak will marry and will live happily ever after.

Reality kicks in you have a 6'2" adult man who sit there letting his crazy mum tell him what to do. DanYi sit at that as if she glued to the chair.

JAC Oct 15 2016 2:54 pm I understand that Gil Eun-Hye aka was in Rosy Lovers which only 52 ep. It is a very nice Romantic drama and her role was to steal the man from someone.

Nevertheless, this drama should of ended at 100 ep. However, the writers and director really don't know what to do with the characters. At the last min. they are adding new people into the drama like the new director, real Sara Lee, sick girl's mother, and others.

Get to the Point....either find another lead actress or let DanYi be in peace and let her marry!

Seeing that its rating is very high in Korea, it seems that Koreans seems to really enjoy this drama, one might think that it represent how Koreans lifestyle is like. To us foreigner, if this how Korean culture/ lifestyle is like, it is VERY VERY scary to live in Korea. - The Rich can do whatever they want, they don't have the basic human mannerism as how to treat those who are not well off. - There is a very very RUDE kid, who if she lives in my country, we would have discipline her and send her to her room and stand in one corner until she shows remorse and admit she is sorry and promised not to do it again. If that doesn't work, she'll have to do chores for a whole week until she show remorse. - The evil (SW and GYJ) will stepped on their own family and their loved ones for their careers and have no conscious whatsoever. - There is even a mother who blame a 1 yr old baby for their SON's death.... wth..??? - Then there is a mother who help & congrats her daughter for stealing someone's fiance. And that mother will blame the other girl for daughter unsuccessful marriages.. I mean what the h*ll..? - There is a guy, who didn't check that he really is divorce before pursuing another woman. He LIED that he is a widower...??? - Then there is a slaves that lets her niece disrespect her, it is just insane to let SW to talk to her aunt like that. I would have scolded her long ago. The slaves have no backbone at all and only have that dumb stare and crying half the time - There is a BIG boss who trust a newly son-in-law blindly in the company finances without doing any double check... - The employer can slap the employee's face and don't get into trouble for it. Even the boss's daughter (who doesn't work there) are also allowed to do slap the staff. If you did that in my country, you will be facing a discipline board for doing that. The boss's daughter can face charges for assault

If this is Korea, then I never want to live there. This drama represent a country where there seems there is little to none justice for the poor. SCARY....

To be extended 150 esp. gave the writers and director more time for trauma when most viewers looked for shinning light. Understand it is only a story, but it has been a long pathetic up and down. Mostly down story!

The character DanYi is a pin cushion where all antagonists in the drama use her.

In particular, this character could easily been in a historical drama and be headed by the antagonists.

This way viewers know what to expect from the writers and director instead they put viewers through a dark tunnel 1st with Goo dumping DanYi and ep 118 Sul Dong Tak being an incredible stupid alcoholic. DanYi and Dong Tak are both irresponsible characters. Viewers are paying the price for their idiotic acting by cast.

It had the possibilities of being a top rated drama but the writers just messed it all up. The actors and actresses are fantastic and that has kept me watching, I feel so sorry for them, they must cringe every time they read the script. Playing Dan-yi has to be really hard since everyone thinks she is such a wimp with zero back bone. I will watch to the end to see how the writers are going to resolve the mess they have created. They have no concept of how audiences feel and react...what we really want. I am American and I love Korean dramas because they are so unlike the American Soaps that I detest. Not this one, alas!! Such a waste of good actors and actresses. I have come to love them all and just wish they had better roles to play.

Understandable that the actors should and must take responsibility for their acting. Viewers are entertain by the various themes in all international dramas. Unfortunately the two writers, director, and cast lack story appeal and slapping women ten or twenty times is violent/over the top boring. Dialogues are repeated over and over in eps throughout the drama. Make the story interesting so Sul Dong Tak may receive a better lead role in the future. Fighting for him because of his quality acting!

Antagonists were way over the top in television screen time and terrible acting by far by Goo, president mum, daughter, SW(fake host),goo mum, 50s baby couple.

All these people were distracting and boring. DanYi and Dong Tak were the leads, but the story was not clear.

I can't wait until they find out SO THAT THEY CAN BLAME DANYI FOR EVERYTHING THAT THEY DID, which she will accept with a quivering lip and a guilty, near tears look. It follows a similar pattern of most of the dramas shown during this time period. I am tired of the drinking whenever there is a problem and the constant crying of some of the characters. The ending is predictable as usual.

How low and dishonest can "The Unusual Family" get to show the world the dirt and crimes women plan to get married. This drama antagonists are Jung Joo-Ran, Son Do-Soon,Kang Man-Soo,Sul Hye-Ri,Goo Yoon-Jae, and Kang Sam-Wol (group of characters and/or concept that represents opposition against DanYi & Dong Tak, and the Farmers.In my opinion, This Drama is overwhelmingly anti-Korean values and traditions it losses its creditability of being a good KDrama. Fighting for young actors like Lee Shi-A and Shin Ji-Hoon. Double standards of past behavior for men/women lacks creativity by the writers.

Dan Yi/Shim Soon-Ae are in a situation where women are judged by others in society. Korean women and men are treated very differently from each other in a way that is unfair to one of them, that is to women in this drama. Music and story is unconnected with bells which suppose to be a hint to the viewers the antagonist is doing something. Ep.71 should be setting up some positive action scenes for DanYi and Dong Tak. But gave it another chance after learning that Shin Ji Hoon (Don Tak) is a newcomer. As episodes progress, turn of events are becoming intriguing... and Don Tak is growing on me... yah, i like Shin Ji Hoon now and see a little of Lee Hongki (of FT Island) and Lee Hyun Woo (of Moorim School) in him.

Secrets of Women have great actors, Beautiful Mind have great actors, Uncontrollable Fond have great actors, and Five Enough are Quality Actors beyond comparison to any drama. I am hopeful for DanYi and DongTak because it would be great if they received a rookie award for acting in a drama. This was a difficult drama to act with so many terrible supporting people and dumb story of rejection by an 40 year boyfriend who interested in money not a woman.

In women's secrets, except for the antagonist who over played her role, everyone acting is on point. What kind of a human being after being in a relationship for 5 years without wavering suddenly waver and marry a sycho b*tch that plays victim to an affair but is practically doing the same this is just too unrealistic and i feel bad for the eyes that see this drama. She is the Lead in this drama. Think the writers missed the mark and lost viewers because they choose to talk the wealthy vs poor people conflict.

It has open my to why it's called unusual family. Clearly the bad guys are the wealthy company mum, daughter, the dad seems to go with his wife decisions. The bad family is goscery store mum and Gu.

The lead actor who suppose save DanYi from her abusive ex boyfriend is the wealthy chairman son. Fighting for for two.

Great match for Gu/Skinny wife.

The focus of this show ought to be on DanYi, but the writing maintain importance on Gu/new wife.

JAC Jun 18 2016 10:38 pm I just checked who the two writers are for 'The Unusal Family.' First you are not consistent in writing the drama. The character for the president's daughter is inexperience and nuts. The character for the mamma's boy friend is more female rather than male. Fix his character. His father and the president are strong males characters. Learned about men before you write about women and men in relationships. You can learn from Oh My Venus and Five Enough writers. Tell positive story instead of driving your viewers nuts with the mix feelings by main characters.

JAC Jun 17 2016 3:59 pm Enjoyed the acting of the brother who is starting at the bottom of the family company Shin Ji-Hoon and mother (who is sending the corrupted loser to Taiwan for her daughter's protection). The daughter actually should be working from bottom to top. She have low self-esteem, lack of judgment about men, and remind of 'The Promise.' Actress who plays SinJin the alcoholic and arrogant daughter who throw her self at poor men to control the man ( money/power). Hope this drama is different.

I think it will be similar, Goo Yoon-Jae will marry Sul Hye-Ri (who is a divorcee ), his mother doesn't like Kang Dan-Yi, there is obviously a birth secret, etc. Because I am watching both dramas at the same time I can see there are a lot of similarities.
