Story follows a young man Heo Jun (Yoon Si-Yoon) and Seo-Ri who was born a princess but became a witch.

Seo-Ri's mother Queen Sim was unable to have a child. She went to a shaman to help her have a child. With the help of shaman Hong-Joo's black magic, Queen Sim was able to have a boy and girl twins. The girl, Seo-Ri, was put under a curse and abandoned deep in the mountains. She meets Heo Jun there.

Notes

"Secret Healer" takes over JTBC's Friday & Saturday 20:30 time slot previously occupied by "My Horrible Boss" and followed by "Hello, My Twenties!" on July 22, 2016.
Story for the drama series is inspired by the book “Dongui Bogam,” compiled and written by royal physician Heo Jun.
First script reading took place March 11, 2016 at JTBC building in Sangam, Seoul, South Korea.
Choi Sung-Won, cast to play supporting character Dong-Rae, has dropped out of the drama series. He was diagnosed with leukemia on May 4, 2016 after suffering light bruising during filming of the drama series. His leukemia was caught in the early stages and there is a high chance of curing his illness through treatment.

Park Min Dec 15 2023 12:24 pm This drama was like a rollercoaster ride without the thrills or the rails. That first episode was unbelievably bad and a huge turn off to kick start the drama but I kept going regardless. The whole mystical shaman vibe in a historical setting turned out to be quite an unsuccessful combo in this case, it felt like they slapped on those elements without any real thought. The entire story felt so limited and restricted, even the cast, when taking into consideration its length. All of that was accompanied by poor pacing, you can imagine how they were trying to push it to reach the 20 episodes mark.

Although there is a huge gap between the main leads yoon shi yoon and Kim sae ron made it really amazing drama. I actually do not like to the ending of this drama. I hope the if the ending had been more beautiful and exact than this because I am not satisfying with it. Anyhow this drama is really nice to see. Recommend this drama to all who love to watch dramas which have black magic ,horror ,romance and revenge. Saranghae!!!

Baladeva Mar 11 2021 8:17 am Entire Drama is waste time, this is like flower of evil. all effort to save one person ruin because unessesary sacrifice.i get it why, must die at right time. but what happen to those died, get killed, their life is nothing. everything start for not telling the truth, and keep secret until one clumsy act, then every problem hit one by one. the drama is too long, and too many dialog. i thing they use a lot writer. historical person mix with fantasy drama. back in 2016 visual effect looks good. only episode i like is episode 1. they have battle once keep getting same mistake. 17 years preperation still doesnt have an army. while witch army is to powerfull. castle lack of guard, and one thing that doesnt make sense is location, from tree to castle its too close.

memau Dec 30 2020 9:25 am The female lead played her role so perfectly it almost felt something out of a Disney Red Riding Hood or Snow White movie with her outfits. Especially the time where she wore all white, when saving Heo Joon falling at the mountains.

This drama was very fun to watch with the perfect ending, although I thought Poong Yeon, her "Older Brother" would've been the sacrifice, if not Heo Joon. But never expected it would be her, which made it an even more better and emotional ending.

It should have been cut at 16 episodes to reduce the unnecessary elements within as the story is really quite good and I see how following dramas after this aired have used a lot of elements, plots etc inside their own dramas. Very well acted, well done to the cast, crew and creators.

Ela Sep 16 2018 9:53 pm I really like historical dramas, and since it was on Netflix, I gave it a try. Actors were all amazing. And I liked that for all characters, you really did get a good understanding of why they did what they did instead of just being “good” and “evil”. The drama was very long though, with lots of back and forth between the antagonists/protagonists. I wouldn’t recommend it if you don’t have patience for that. Overall, I think the ending was realistic, which I respected. But there are some gaps I wished were filled more.

~ The plot was well written and exucated and I finished it in a few days ( credit to the whole crew)

~ found out about a beautiful actress who deserved a bigger role ( mun ka-young).

~ I was frustrated a few times with that Whitch ( but full credit to yum Jung-ah for her amazing acting)

At first, I didn't noticed it but when I watched it again, I got curiousity in my mind saying that, "I think that drama is cool. I want to watch that." As the time goes by, I didn't have much time to watch it but yesterday, my friend told me that Secret Healer is really good and she told me to download it but I don't have enough space. Haha. I done watching the best hit earlier and I am thinking what k-drama to watch so since i miss wathching historical drama, I decided to watch it but im still in episode 1 ?

Leslie Jul 14 2018 6:32 pm I hung in there until episode 16, but just couldn't take any more of the endless twists and turns, very few of which were remotely reasonable. The actors were great; the story was too long and convoluted. There's only so many times the 'wicked witch' can smirk superiorly at the camera before it loses its effect.

EaOutlaw1969 Jun 17 2018 8:16 pm Great show, but the film editors need to up their game some, in ep4 in the night shot where the girl and older guy are running from the female warriors you could see the shadow of the drone filming the shot. Kind of gets you out of the mood to watch any more.

Unlike other lead characters where you admire quickly I couldn't help but be annoyed at both the leading male and female characters. Don't get me wrong the actors are great, the characters they play are annoying though. They always end up doing the wrong thing therefore creating more problems for themselves. They try to make the characters as innocent as possible to the point where it's just irritating. I wish a drama comes along where the leads are strong, brave, skillful, and a little cunning!

Benjie May 20 2018 12:20 am I really love this drama. the cinematography match with the sad story. you know what? this drama really motivated me and taught me about true love's sacrifice. This made me cried a lot in the first time of my life watching korean dramas. The ending for me, was so beautiful that it touched my young and innocent heart. This personally made me realize that one day when I become older, I will miss those times i spent my youth with the person I love. One day, I would wish to God to go back to the times where the tragedy happened because it doesn't matter as long as that time, I am meaningfully spending my days the person I miss.

Una Apr 12 2018 9:24 pm was enjoying this but it just kept droning on with same stuff over and over. how many times are people going to fall for the same crap from the clearly evil woman? *yawn* And why doesn't the palace have better guards? anybody who wants to seems to get into the royal quarters. It only took 10 people to overcome a royal ceremony outside the palace, because they didn't think the royal family would need protection when the populace is so upset? and the son, who knew nothing about his dad's work is suddenly appointed head of the spiritual magic ritual temple and just knows what to do? there are so many ridiculous things ... also, it becomes clear that that the romantic lead male is going to have to sacrifice himself once you learn about the last page in the book, so there isn't much point to watching it all play out.

fun costumes and sets, though.

The story reminded a bit of Snow White or Sleeping Beauty with a bit of The Wizard of Oz thrown in! Crazy I know but the shaman reminded me of the wicked witch of the east or was it west? Lol. Anyway, I found it entertaining, think I understood the ending when he'd obviously died and passed over to the other side to be with his love, but it was slightly disappointing they didn't end up together to live out their lives, having children and growing old with one another

seren Apr 02 2018 9:40 am The ending was USELESS. Beginning as a huge success lets them make it worse. There were so many story mistakes and blurs and gaps. nice story and acting though. It should have ended in a proper way, a happy ending or sth like that. I don't understand scenarists really!

They deserve a happy ending, at least afterlife but this ending is so vague that we didn't even understand it whether this was a dream or a real afterlife experience.

I love the plot and the story. But hell, i hate the ending. They deserve a happy ending after what they've been through. Like you know, all those hardships have been pointless after seeing the ending. And what about queen dowager? Heo Ok's mom? What happened to her after knowing about Heo Ok? Damn. I expected a happy ending because I really love the plot and the story. I love the actors. All of it! Just hating the ending right now and I can't really accept the fact that they didn't live 30 years being together.

Just another drama addict Jun 27 2017 3:24 pm I really recommend this drama, even to those who are normally not into sageuks. Not only was the cinematography gorgeous but the acting from all the actresses and actors were phenomenal. A lot of times actors can overshadow eachother but in this case that doesn't happen.

I admit the drama wasn't perfect but what drama doesn't have some flaws lol. Also I know people may be wary of the age gap but the writers and actors are very mindful of it and I believe they portrayed the romance well considering the circumstance. Love doesn't necessary always mean it has to be physical. Heojun and Yeonhee shared an innocent love and had a deeper understanding of each other, which I found more intimate than a kiss scene. They both understand the pain/loneliness of not fitting into sociey, whether it is due to social standing or some supernatural curse. People say they could have just picked different actors but i felt Kim Saeron was perfect in her role and Yoon Shiyoon did amazing as well. But if you want a steamy romance then this is not the drama for you haha.

(SPOILER ALERT BEYOND THIS POINT)

I know there are mixed feelings about the ending but I personally felt it was beautiful in a tragic way. Yes it was heartbreaking but appropriate considering they decided to stay true to Heojun's history. It may have not been the happiest ending but it was bittersweet. I personally loved the last scene and made me happy that they would eventually find happiness in the afterlife (well that was my interpretation lol).

The whole story seems doesn't fit with the ending. Oh! And the ending, i prefer happy ending than this bittersweet ending. They deserved it for all their efforts. Just saying.

No one can replace the acting prowess of Siyoon-ssi.I hope JTBC will hold its own award ceremony to highlight their good dramas.

Love it til last scenes I was crying and waiting for some closer....don't get me wrong wonderful drama and acting....if it would have ended with Jun as scholar doing good for humanity fine.....but....taking me to a scene with the kite then it gets confusing.....made me cry more....still confused....i guess it was just to remind us of their love and innocent...and buy more Kleenex.....!

This is the most heart breaking drama ending, I couldn't help but cry after the credit, not because I usually cry on drama but because it traumatized me !! It was soo sad, and also because i love dong gu it makes me sad to see what happens to them.. The ending makes the whole story seems useless. I know not every drama has the happy ending, but this one is just cruel. Towards the end they were so happy though i know it's gonna be sad but not that tragic.

Ever since they met the goal was to release her from the curse and keep her alive, but why ?? WHY ??? Every bit of the fight is worthless in the end !!! Why don't they make it like gu family book ?? Just for the sake of the drama lover, to calm our heart.

I love yoon dong gu, but I regret watching this because it really hurts me !!

I love the drama a lot because it is so interesting and I like both of the leads. But the plot at the end is too draggy and makes no sense what so ever. I don't even know if I like it or not..... It had so much potential to be one of the best....

hwayong Jul 30 2016 1:03 pm Personally I think this drama has a great idea.. It feels like disney story adapted in korean dramas. It starts with good plots and I excitedly watched it but as it goes on, it becomes unreasonable and I just lost my interest to continue watching it. Some characters are just so 'innocent' or well, stupid, in some ways, and the protagonists seems to have no much power againts the antagonist so it just doesn't really exciting anymore. The actors and actrees did great job here and it is just so bad that the story line doesn't grow so well..

Warning to the viewers though, make sure you have a box of tissue because this drama will make you cry your eyes out. Yoon SI Yoon and Kim Sae Ron are such great actors. This is definitely a must watch.

And seemed to meander in some really convoluted and directionless path where no one's motivations made sense at all, or if they did, you were wondering why other characters were being so compliant to the point of feelings like plot puppets rather than characters. It seemed like it was really shaping up to be one of my favorite dramas and I'm so sad it ended up the way it did. If you're looking for a genuinely engaging and good supernatural historical drama, check out Arang and the Magistrate.

Well..yes, Rapunzel and Yeon Hui both had a curse and they were both confined in one place. But I don't see where the story of the two gets similar beyond that. Rapunzel was confined in the tower because she is a tool being used by her 'mother' to stay young. Yeon Hui was confined to a secluded place because she was being protected and she was trying to break her curse. The witch/Rapunzel's pretend-mother did bad things for her own sake while the shamaness in MOTW did so because she wants to take revenge on everyone in Joseon. Flinn was a fugitive. Heo Joon was a slave. They were both on the run but for Flinn, it's because he did something bad (he stole from his fellow thieves) while Heo Joon did so because he was trying to escape his misery. And lastly, this story was written ages ago by the real life Heo Joon who was really a real life royal physician then.

Amazed Fan Jul 21 2016 6:16 am This is a simply stunning drama. It can drag at some parts, but the ending is so worth it. An amazing tale of true love with an ending that you can't really prepare for. Watch it if you love a good romance with scary magic and funny comedy thrown into the mix! I'm personally a huge Kim Saeron fan, but even if you aren't, every single one of the actors are great at what they do!

Yuri Jul 20 2016 6:17 am This drama is different from other dramas. It's hard to pull of a fantasy drama and everyone who worked in this did an exceptional job in making the series ever so wonderful. The story was beautifully told. Actors were great. Kim Sae Ron has a skill for acting beyond her age. I look forward to seeing her in more dramas or films and, hopefully, they'd also be as great challenging as this.

And the ending...I was expecting it to be tragic but sorrow took me by surprise despite knowing it to be inevitable. But still, it was just appropriate. It portrays really well how the characters would have acted in the circumstances.

As for the real life Heo Joon, I'd really like to read his book if I would ever have the chance. I wonder if some scenes were really based on his firsthand experiences.

BEFORE IT WAS AIRED AND AFTER IT WAS AIRED... i anticipated this drama much and my time was not wasted.... the plot , the story, the twists and romance and some comedy was really good.... so much good that it made me cry!!! esp the last ep... where in the whole episode, i cried... and still not recovered... T______T damn.. i want at least.. they have :* *kissed* hehehe :D i dont care of their age gap... T___T this drama is one of the best saeguk ever >___<< amazing!! daebak!!! ughh... *crying*

Yoon Si-Yoon never fails to impress me with his acting. This was my first drama with Kim Sae-Ron and not regretting it. She did such nice job with being so young.

LaMelusine Jul 18 2016 6:06 am I really loved this drama. The main actor has many expressions and that's something I really loved. Yum Jung Ah is a really good actress and with Mr. Lee in the end made me really cry. I had different feelings for Hong Joo, I despised, pitied, loved and hated her. But she wasn't evil she was a poor soul and woman who was used as an object. She loved Mr. Choi but knew thwy would never be toghether and mr. Choi felt something for her. The last scene when he says he'll accompany her on the fire pire and she just hugged him tighter...i really was in tears. Their acting was better than the main actors but it's obvious due to the age and experience difference. I was touched by the ending, I was expecting some expedient to revive Yeon hee, but It would be akward and unrealistic, so I was happy when he grew old and after his death met her. It was also an example for us , who live in the real world, to live our life even when the people we love are no more around.

As far as the lead actress go's OMG the girl is so young and So incredibly talented.. shes 16 I can not even Imagine her in 10 more years amazing talent. I love Historical Drama's added with a bit of Mystery in them Like The Gu Family Book, The Night Watchmen, The Scholar that Walks at night.. I love them all and I would put this one in that Category too.. If you like fantasy and historical Sets and fashion Like I do you would enjoy this love story/ fantasy plot

I feel relieved because my curiosity about who saved yo kwang has the answer and disappointed because there less dramatical ending for hong jo. So complicated. But overall I really love this drama.

And for those who complain about the actress age. In the beginning she was 16, like her real age. but in a few episode, the story tell that she become 21 years old woman, and started to have a romantic scene. so I think the writer want it acceptable by viewers. and in this drama, they didn't have too much skinship like lip kissing. and for your information the actress has her 'first kiss' in another drama before that make me uncomfortable. so I enjoyed this drama.

I don't like watching historical dramas, but I fully enjoyed this one. The ending literally moved me to tears. I went to work crying. I believe the directors did a great job and the actors as well.

The drama called for a young witch and she fit this part well until the writers chose for her to get romantic involved with the other 2 adult male leads. As an actress she has jumped ahead into the adult world. I think she has loss her credibility and I feel she will feel the repercussions from other adult actresses. It’s a wonder the writers didn’t extend the episodes and have her 1 year later go through the birthing process. Poor kid grew up too fast. All characters took turns being locked-up, tied up or knocked out episode after episode. Overall it was a poorly written and directed..

The age different doesn't bother me, it's fictional, as long as there are no tongues involved in kissing scene, I don't care. Lip to lip kissing is fine. As the drama goes on, I lost interest because I was hoping Heo Jun is a strong character protecting Yeon-Hee. Then I was also looking forward to see Yeon-Hee using more of her power to protect herself, not much there. The character that stole the show is Hong-Joo, her role and acting is very good even though I can't stand her. Hoping the last 2 episodes will be great.

This drama makes me appreciate the work of a good director for making the cast act so surreal, believable and true to their role. highlightings each cast with a remarkable performance. The cinematography, sounds and costume all great. I will miss it when its over but I'll be looking forward to see Kim Sae-Ron,Yoon Si-Yoon, Kwak Si-Yang, Lee Ji-Hoon,Lee Sung-Jae,Jang Hee-Jin and Lee Yi-Kyung in their next dramas.

*well though heroin would not gonna die anyway coz it would be the end of the story in only 16 ep lol....

ep 15 is one of ep that really make me smile ^^ the ep that make me think the king was not that bad..

for those who asking about yo gwang, in my opinion the director made a time twist in this scene. actually hyun seo save yo gwang first before he died. it just assumption, because I didn't have any rational explanation about this scene too. :-D

Kim Sae-Ron and Yoon Si Yoon have a sparkling chemistry. Indeed, I have seen their chemistry in previous photo-shoot for a magazine. Entire Cast selection for this drama is "The best". Incredibly well-written drama. I am sure it is gonna get all awards by end of this year in every single category. Mark my words.

in episode 4 if i'm not mistaken,yes hong joo killed YG. YG is dead that time. in fact, all the monks are dead that time. Then someone came and brought him back to life and carried him away to safety. Little did we know who is that person. All we ever know is YG came back from dead and saved Yeon Hee from the frozen lake. The one who brought YG back to life still remain a mystery. There's a prediction that it was Choi Hyun Seo, but it was impossible because that time, he was on the run with Yeon Hee and then stabbed to death by Hong Joo. This show is sooo exciting that it is so unpredictable, lots of twist and turns.

Whoever still hesitant to watch this drama or not, please watch it. You won't regret it. And if you're hesitant about the age gap, please don't. The main leads are awesome and so romantic without being excessive in physical touch. They didn't look like they have a big age gap. Either it's Yoon Si Yoon who looks young or Kim Sae Ron who looks mature, you decide.

This drama is like a fresh air in Kdrama and will remain my fav for a long time.

But it's a lot confused about black magic and taoist act between Hong Joo and Choi Hyun seo. Very complicated scheme and plot. It's hard to understand. Hope will have a happy ending. :D

King Myungjong died without a heir since the Crown Prince died a few years before him. The next person in line is King Sunjo, that's why he replaced King Myungjong.

Every scene is amazing and lot of analysis is put through. Excellent drama that has a strong plot and very intriguing story line and not to mention acting of the entire cast is just awesome. This drama is "Daebak"!! It is going to be in my all-time Favorite list for sure.

In entertainer, jisung oppa make a great act so I didn't care about the age gap but I care about the storyplot. Entertainer's story is interesting. rdk May 18 2016 11:14 am Yoon Shi Yoon said the characters are both 17, but imo, Kim Sae Ron looks way younger than 17 and Yoon Shi Yoon looks like a guy in his early 20s. But I choose to not care about that. The first episode is mind blowing. The second episode is not as intense as the first, but it's good though. I can't really feel the chemistry between the leads yet, but it's ok for me. I'm not rooting for a romantic story.

And oh, btw, Yum Jung Ah is awesome!

People complaining about their chemistry and age gap should watch the behind the scenes video. Cuteness overload. Especially Kim see Ron is apt for this role and perfect selection. She is doing justice to the role. In episode 2 she made me teary eyed when asking for those fruits as she can't go over the fence. We can feel her loneliness and innocence in her expressions. Great actress and having a bright future. NOT TO MENTION, CGI is top notch and out of the world. The tiger scene had me glued and look so real. Exceptional CG work. Overall this drama is awesome and I am eagerly waiting for 3rd episode.

It's not romantic, it's not love at first sight or crazy like any other kdrama couples met, but it was funny and cute!! Kim Sae Ron and that lead guy played it out perfect! and really, i know her real age is, but i enjoyed the drama without any age gap judgements. Some people have to take chill pill, really. It's just a drama. People call it acting if you didn't know what that means.

Although it has Shamans and the royal family, it's very different and far from The Moon Embracing The Sun. I mention it because a lot of people talked about it. It's more like Tangled. It's a beautiful dark fairy tale plus comedy. Their first meeting was not romantic. It's SWEET and CUTE and HEARTWARMING and FUNNY and better than romantic. And you're hooked after watching them. @BARBARBAR they are not twins. There's a love story and it's lovely. It's not recommended for the impatient viewers because they will go crazy waiting for the next episode. The first episode's flow of events is very fast and it will send shivers down your spine. The second episode seems slower because of that but you'll get to know and fall in love with the characters. They're just so cute and adorable in the second episode. Then you'll watch their first meeting one more time. You'll imagine a lot of things that can happen in the story and go crazy waiting for the next episode.

Shamanism and Witchcraft is as old as humanity itself. Those are the true spiritual paths of man and they walk hand in hand. ALL OF US derive from ancient cultures that were one with the gods and goddesses and walking a shamanic path or at least RESPECTING those who walked to those paths. It wasn’t until civilizations were raped and pillaged and forced to convert that many of these spiritual paths went underground. However, there are still those who continue to practice those spiritual paths to this day. How can you be a hypocrite and watch Korean dramas and yet disrespect their culture in that way? Do you know how many traditional Korean dances derive from Mugyo? (Korean Shamanism). Almost all of them do. Mugyo is a BIG part of Korean culture and traditions. Unfortunately, many Koreans shun their traditional religious beliefs but, they still respect these practices and they still go to their local Shamans when they have serious problems. I am sure in your religion there is a concept of respecting others (even though funnily enough it is those who practice certain religions that love to be intolerant). Look to yourself, and even your own ancestry before you come here and spew that disgusting intolerance. Despicable!

(1) AGE GAP - I guess some people have lost touched with the real fact that every single actor/actress including the leads in this fictional drama is playing a character role. Whatever the ages of their character roles are has nothing to do with their ages in real lives. Again, emphasis on 'roles', it's not happening in their real lives people. YSY is not preying or illegally having a relationship with the young actress. Those who are so passionate abt insisting it's wrong for YSY to play the role of the young girl's love interest, instead of wasting your time here why don't you advocate & fight against the 'real' life issues of child brides & child trafficking?

(2) RELIGIOUS BELIEFS - if you don't agree dramas portraying witchcraft, supernatural powers etc.. why are you watching this drama in the first place? Have you considered maybe your own religion, if you have one, is rooted in pagan beliefs that's why not matter how hard you deny it, you're attracted to this kind of dramas? He who has not sin cast the first stone. Before you start quoting the bible & swearing by dead saints' names, ask yourself if you're even worthy to pass judgments?

So those who have whatever issue for whatever reason, Mirror of the Witch is just a drama, either enjoy it or stop watching it. Your choice.

And I'm pretty much enjoying the creative freedom on this drama as they put actual historical figures (and some fictious ofc) in a fantasy world setting.

to @daehee who thinks that it is plagiarized, please shift your attention to more sageuk dramas or movies that involves shamans. Whatever you pointed out are common factors of the sageuk genre.

And to those who think that YoonSiYoon's character is the crown prince, please do check up a little bit of history. His character is based on a real person - Heo Jun/Joon (Hur Jun). There are even a couple of shows and movies with the name - Hur Jun.

And the interesting thing is that, this drama is supposed to be loosely inspired form HeoJun's famous book - Dongui Bogam. (The series is called "Manyeo Bogam" - get what I mean?) . Though funny thing is, his book was based on Eastern medicines ( Eastern region of the then Korean peninsula).

I was initially skeptical about watching this show as I was very much disturbed about the age gap between the leads (though KimSaeRon is a versatile actress and a brilliant one at that) because SaeRon is not even legal, yet. But I gave it a shot for the supernatural element involved and man, I'm impressed. This show seem promising and I can't wait to see the flow of the story.

I love how they got the creative freedom to use actual historical figures in a fantasy world setting.

YoonSiYoon's character HeoJun(check "Hur Jun" for the drama and know more about the character)..... I can't wait to see his character in this fantasy world setting and couldn't be more amazed to know that this series is loosely inspired by HeoJun's book "Dongui Bogam" [a book of Eastern medicine (as in the eastern location of the then geographical region of the country) ]. So, anyone with the idea of HeoJun being the prince, do some wiki check or watch Hur Jun.

@daehee - before you start accusing someone for plagiarizing, first you must be sure (1) you understand what it means to plagiarize (2) you have proof. Have you seen the scripts for this drama & the other drama/s you talked about? Is every scene, every dialogues including the characters' traits exactly the same? With fictional dramas, there'd always be similarities. Writers can get inspired by their imagination, things they see, read or hear that doesn't mean they'd be stupid enough to risk their careers & reputations by copying someone else's work word for word. Unless you got solid, irrefutable evidence, may I suggest thinking before you speak.

If this drama is too hard to watch, then don't. Give your heart a rest, just watch something you like because, the drama is already on its way and there's no way it'll be cancelled XD

Like Hyeri & Ji-Sung in Entetainer... a bit uncomfortable for me personally, but acceptable and NOT problematic because HYERI IS AN ADULT.

And in the news reports, they give plot and character description. It's supposed to be a "romantic" relationship. It says so explicitly. You can read them on dramabeand and other kdrama news outlets if you don't believe me.

Also re: whoever said it was ok because it's a sageuk. This is a fusion drama about a freaking witch. It is very very very loosely based in history. Kim Sae-Ron's character is made-up. There is absolutely no need for faux pretend "historical accuracy". They most certainly could have (and should have) chosen an older actress.

I'm just going to pray that the relationship is super super super platonic with as little touching as possible. Like... longing gazes maybe and at the most, hand-holding.

Why I am kind of disappointed is that if this is on the Romance Genre I think is going to be rare if we see romance because of that age gap. Even do in most of the dramas the kisses looks like they don't want to kiss each other but still is exciting especially if the story line is good. I really doubt we are going to see kisses on this one maybe a hug or two or kiss in the forehead. Lets not forget that theres dramas where they don't kiss at all. If just maybe maybe they will kiss the company will be taking a huge risk by doing it. And I think Korean companies are really careful what they portray specially with kpop groups and dramas. They do have their Mature movies but I think is because is an option if you watch it or not and if is PG13 and up you need an id. Dramas are played on cable and kids can watch them with out permission. What is so rare is that us as fans are the ones talking more about the age gap hahahah I haven't find any interview where the actors are talking about it.

But anyway, I think you missed my point? A 15-year-old minor being romantically involved with a 29-year-old adult is not okay. It's inherently predatory. An adult should not be in a "relationship" with a child. This is not the same as a 13-year-old dating a 15-year-old. People wouldn't bat an eye if it happened in real life. I started dating my first boyfriend when I was 17 and he was 16. It's not particularly strange. Two kids playing boyfriend and girlfriend is different from an adult taking advantage of a minor.

My concerns about the casting aren't out of some kind of spite towards Kim Sae-Ron. I like her. (It's funny that you think I'm a malicious Kim So-Hyun fan bc my fave is Kim Yoo-Jung, lol). Anyway, Kim Sae-Ron is cute and very talented. She's been fantastic in everything I've seen her in. But it will be uncomfortable watching her act in romantic scenes with an actor that is so much older than her. It's unavoidable that their scenes will carry a predatory undertone because he is an adult twice her age and she is a minor. I don't want this drama to sweep that under the rug or to romanticize it.

Also... In Secret Door, Kim Yoo Jung was partway replaced by a twenty-something actress because people were uncomfortable with the age gap, even though it was marketed as her first "main" role. I admit I never finished watching Reset (it bored me) but I'm like 85% sure the relationship was never romantic, even if the doppelganger or whatever wasn't actually related to him. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

A thirty year old man being romantically involved with a fifteen year old girl is not okay. It's predatory. I'm worried that this drama will try to gloss over it. I think Kim Sae-Ron has a bright future ahead of her and I like that she's trying to take on ambitious roles. If she was a little older and YSH a little younger, I would be fully on board with the casting. But I have a little sister and I am sensitive to these kinds of things.

I bet you didnt watch it eventhough its not clearly the male lead thought kim so hyun as her sister but after you watch carefully you will know it. Kim yoo jung secret door? I think nothing was wrong. I like it and there is nothing between kim yoo jung and male lead. So back off tsarina, you must ve fans of kim so hyun. I seriusly hate when comes ppl being unfair about kim sae ron kim so hyun and kim yoo jung. They just know to put all negativity comments about kim sae ron and praises all kim so hyun stuff. Nam Joo Hyuk is 6 years older than Kim Sae Ron. When they filmed the kiss scene, Kim Sae Ron was 15 and he was 21. She was a minor, he was not. Kim Sae Ron is still in middle school. I'm not sure if Nam Joo-Hyuk chose to pursue post-secondary education or not, but if he did, he would be in his second or third year of university.

In comparison, Yeo Jin Goo is only 2 years older than Kim So Hyun. It aired in 2012, so that means she was 13 and he was 15. They were both underage, they were both in middle school. It wouldn't be strange for a 13-year-old to date a 15-year-old in real life.

And in Reset, the relationship isn't romantic. Kim So-Hyun plays Chun Jung-Myung's little sister. In Mirror of the Witch, it was explicitly stated that the relationship would be romantic.

Yoon Shi-Yoon is 29. I might have been okay with them casting Kim Sae-Ron if he was in his early twenties. But he's almost thirty. He's finished his military service. He does have a baby face but geez, he's almost TWICE her age. The age difference in itself wouldn't bother me if Kim Sae-Ron was like, 19, and Yoon Shi Yoon was like 34. But she's still in MIDDLE SCHOOL. I see how this is a big opportunity for her and do think she has the acting chops for it, but she's barely a teenager. No amount of acting can make up for that. In Glamorous Temptation, I could suspend disbelief, but this is really stretching it. People are not going to buy it. Look at what happened with Kim Yoo-Jung in The Secret Door.

I once asked someone I know in the industry how they felt about age gaps, they said "It's acting, and the role you play isn't you. If you're playing a role where the age gap is 6 years but it's actually 13, it's fine. Because you're interacting with them through your character, if you're not then that's not an actor." I can understand the discomfort people may have while watching them, especially if their roles are romantic, but we aren't even sure if it will be. Even if it is, this also seems to be a drama thats set in the past and not present day, where age gaps weren't so odd and girls married young. It wouldn't be odd if Sae Ron will be playing a role older than her age, or Si Yoon playing a role younger than his age. After all, Sae Ron played a college student at the end of High School Love On too.

JyunP Mar 26 2016 11:52 am Guys, I know she is kind of still a minor but give her a chance! 13-14 years age gap isn't all that bad. In Prime Minister and I, Lee Bum Soo and Yoona are 20 years apart! And there are some couple in real life with an age gap of 13-16 years old. Keep in mind this is just acting. They are professionals and give her a chance maybe watch the first episode or so before you judge her. I'm not a fan of Kim Sae-ron, tbh I haven't watch her apart from a couple of clips from High School Love On, but she has potential.
