People hear predictions on when they will die. When that time comes, a death angel appears in front of them and kills them.

Jung Jin-Su (Yoo Ah-In) is the head of new religion Saejinrihwe. He speaks about the phenomenon when death angels from Hell come and states it's a revelation from God. Jung Jin-Su has intense charisma and a mysterious aspect.

Bae Young-Jae (Park Jeong-Min) is a PD for a broadcasting station. He tries to dig out the truth about religious group Saejinrihwe.

Min Hey-Jin (Kim Hyun-Joo) is a lawyer. She stands up against the group “Hwasalchok” (‘Arrowhead’), which consists of people who blindly follow Saejinrihwe.

Song So-Hyun (Won Jin-A) is Bae Young-Jae’s wife. She collapses in emotional pain, which she can not deal with.

Jin Kyung-Hoon (Yang Ik-June) is a detective and investigates cases involving the appearance of angels of deaths.

Cineast Jan 04 2026 7:50 am Korea delivers a lot of good shows, this one included. The entertainment is there, sometimes even some impulses for thoughts. You need to get past the overwhelming drama stuff though (a Korean thing it seems). It is interesting that the creators stayed away from showing interaction and reaction of other religions to this new cult and the events. It only mentions once that they are not connected to Christianity and especially have and want no connection to it.

I really loved the end, the final "twist". I hated the showdown at the wreck site for several reasons. One being why she was shot when they didn't want that to have an effect (just for drama, gosh).

If you like Korean shows give it a go. It's not full of action though, keep that in mind. The focus is on different parts.

This exposes the way cults and even religions are taking advantage of people's fears and relating every single damn thing to their faith and beliefs, and how only them can save humanity. This is a must-watch series that surely leaves an impression.

Nathaniel B. Oct 12 2022 7:02 pm Despicable! Its pretentions to theological, philosophical, or social meaning are rubbish. This is violence for the sake of violence, horror for the sake of horror. The author is a pretender with out the intellectual ability to explain, or give logic to what a feverous brain concocted. As a Catholic I would have liked to have seen an encounted between the creatures and the body of Christ, but that would have taken some thought, and might have proven offensive to some, and this series went to great lengths not to offend anyone, except maybe those with a weak stomach.

It has unnecessary violence and the whole thing is just a mishmash of stuff. I am unable to empathize with any character too. It could have been a much much better series.

Oh ya, the "angel" looks like casper having a bad day while the hellish thugs look like donkey kongs.

You get to feel for some people being "judged", while also putting all your hate towards the arrowheads portrayed. Personally one of the better shows for me so far this year. Looking forward to season 2!

Only that I hate the bad CGI quality of the hell giants and the fog-like prophecy "angel". They look so lame, not scary or "divine" at all. How could Netflix produce such a bad quality CGI??

I have always frequent this place to know and read comment but I think it's about time I voice out about this negative comments, for me Hellbound is one of the best Netflix produced 2021, and it wasn't lacking in anyway, it's just six episodes you can't expect them to cover up the whole story?? I believe the first season is Just to talk about the content of the film and later on maybe if there's another season they will talk about the loopholes and make it more better than the first, Hellbound is great I will rate 10/10, it's time we start enjoying good dramas like this and stop condemning and criticizing works of great people who took their time to give us the best ?

Sorry but I got bored, 2 episodes and the creatures of hellbound only appeared once and that was at the very start... Will still try to finish this, probably I'm just really not in to cult stuff - I like Happiness much much much more, I've enjoyed it from start to finish. Although I don't enjoy much as far as the start of this Hellbound series, I hope I will still enjoy the ending cause otherwise I may just drop this around 3rd or 4th episode if I still find this boring...

shin yuna revolution Dec 19 2021 6:30 pm i’ll be honest, although the drama isn’t the best, it still kept me hooked, and i watched the entire season in that 6 hours.

the drama’s idea at hand is very cool, but the execution of it isn’t incredible. there are things said and done like they’re very important to the storyline but then were never brought up again. we never see heejung and her dad after that hug scene? we never found out how hyejin was alive after all?? or even how everyone thinks jung jinsoo was travelling the world. of course they can be questions answered in season 2, but they should’ve been answered in one, let alone the fact the series may not be renewed, though i’m sure it probably will. knowing that this show is coming from the same director as train to busan makes it pretty sad and underwhelming, considering the quality difference between the two. i’ll be fair though, train to busan is a movie and this is a netflix series.

the cgi is… questionable? it’s not bad as such, it’s just too detailed in a way?? i wouldn’t like to compare the two, but i’ll do so anyway.. sweet home. the cgi was not amazing on that show, but it still felt scary and like a horror. the creatures in hellbound were not scary whatsoever. once you see the creatures the first time, you’re kind of used to it all the other times. this might sound weird, but it’s hard to find it scary when the creatures do the same thing every single time. the only part that will actually make you feel suspenseful is the lead up to park jungja’s demonstration, i think that part was considerably well done.

despite being an 18+ series, the only part that was very shocking is the very beginning of episode one due to how gory that part was. from their on, a lot of the detailed scenes aren’t very visible due to the creatures being in camera view. i think a 14 year old would probably be able to watch this series, it could’ve passed rated 15.

i think the actors were well casted, others not… yoo ahin is a objectively good actor i think. i can always see him as his character rather than yoo ahin despite all the things i’ve seen him in. he can play polar opposite characters well. the actors that i think didn’t perform well have to be all those from new truth. kim jeongchil is the leader, literally the one meant to anger you, but i felt nothing. a lot of shows know how to literally make you feel pure anger, or make you think “oh god, what’s gonna happen next?” i didn’t feel that once watching this.

what i’ll say, if you wanna bide your time with a drama, watch this one. it’s not boring enough to make you stop watching, but not good enough to the point you’ll be desperate for season two after watching it. it’s not good or bad, it’s just neutral. i will say, i still want season two, i think it is capable of turning into an iconic series if it fills in the gaps in season two, however i have to say, i would be pretty unbothered even if it wasn’t renewed.

tampalasan Dec 06 2021 1:22 pm i dont know about the others, but its not empty for me..ended up thinking more.. will the baby show up again as grownup?why the burnt sinner gets her skin again?this is common for kdramas and that's a nice edge they have..a prep for season2..they have both those that ends and those that doesn't end yet. boring u say?hahaha..u should see our local dramas..all about mistress,revenge and having crushes,crying and slaps is all they can do, generic acting with pretty faces is all we have..no emotional effect at all..no other genre or plot or twists..u can foretell the ending of the story in 1 episode.maybe even half of that 1st ep.can't do detective?law?music?sports?plot twists?fantasy?we dont even have any tourism shows like 2d1n other than drew's?so i'd say this series is still recommendable if u dont mind the cliffhanger type.

Positive Points: Different topic: talks about cult and religion, how people can influence an manipulate naive ones. Sci-fi: the storyline revolves around hell monsters who kill you with a profecy (date and time of your death), the effects are great.

Negative Points: The characters had zero to barely any connection with each other, even if you watch the episodes separately it would quite make sense. I feel the lack of connection to the viewer, when you watch a drama you can empathize with the leads, this one I had no feelings (except the baby) at all. No scientists involved, no explanation to the weird phenomenon (I wouldn't mind). But what upsets me the most was the storyline, I expected horror + mystery and got only special effects with cult stuff.

Improvement Points: The storyline could've been So Much Better. They could go further with the emotions of the characters or connect the police, producers to the cult... the topic is interesting but they manage to pull an average plot.

Would I recommend? NO. I'd suggest Sweet Home (it's different from the webtoon but overall a good plot) or Girl from Nowhere if you're into mystery.

Not horror from the monster, but how the people behave in this drama, how they easily got manipulated AND manipulating. They really make you question our humanity, purpose in life, existentialism and so on. Again, this is the most horrifying situation for me, got caught in the middle of cult-authoritarian system that you can't escape and got nowhere to go. But in the end of the scene, there is a glimpse of hope that human is not that horrible. Anyway great series!! Such a rollercoaster ride

And how danger it can be when we are misled by the wrong group of people. It touches on how human can turn cruel and selfish just for what the majority sees the situation. We often believe something just because it say so, but did not bother to understand before taking sides. Online videos, serving as evidence, can also deeply influence our mind and thinking easily.

A human's divine intervention. Which is why I think the baby lived then some how resurrectingt he dead like a Philosopher Stone (F.M.A.meaning of this stone) which the baby could be in a sense.

Also, don't think there is one way to interpret this series. A lot of people are telling each other "your wrong," "you clearly didn't understand what they were trying to depict." Lol Guys they made a whole show on how people interpret "divine intervention" differently (with a couple of other messages in there), and now your having the exact conversations as those in the series. So i'm sure the writers and all that wanted to see how different people would interpret their perspective.

I personally believe the monster might be controlled (hear me out these details might be a little far fetch for some but these are details I noticed of the monster's behavior) The monsters don't have a hive mindset the only times they show unity is in there entrance and exit. Even with the exits they leave through different portals. I say this b/c you can see scenes of the monsters pushing each other out the way (gambler guy who died) to get the human first (my brain goes well why show this the monster pushing the other aren't they both working for the same reasons?)so they clearly have their own conscious in a sense. The monster don't have a uniformed way of fighting, its free for all. which makes me think this isn't exactly a "natural disasters that just happens for no reason. Yes, simply due to lack of uniformity a small conscious. The series made sure to give us very little details and keep everyone focused on why that person why why why why.

I mean this might be a stretch but these are some details I noticed of the monsters. honestly my suspicion is telling me another human is involved in this somehow ....b/c the idea of this being a big supernatural being controlling this means basically the humans deadass need the Avengers; so basically the series needs to create a stronger supernatural being to save them (which they might). Plus I don't think the show is trying to prescribe to any one religion or religion in general. Because we meet a possible Atheist( taxi driver at end),we know Christians are here (new truth said how they didn't want to be perceived as them), new world order religion (the new truth). Believing that the monster came from a divine being; elimanates the questions of why is this happening. But if we say oh its God then there must be a grand reason, I must have done something. Take away that chair of divine intervention, and then what you stand on is your own two feet. No guide book, no preacher, no answers no god. Now you have to come up with the why all on your own....isn't that scarier.... no god to lean on...just you...many people don't sit with theirselves long enough to be their own chair...

but yeah thats my "lil interpretation" ofc so more to analyze...like that big ass head???. Also, I believe this series is a webtoon?? so that might help with some hints if they chose to follow it.

M Nov 29 2021 12:16 pm After reading some of the comments, I'm surprised at how many people seem to have missed the point of this show... I think it was interesting and refreshing that they don't explain Everything and leave space to the watcher's interpretation. I'd say nothing in this show is gratuitous and contrary to what the comments are saying, it was really well written (and acted but I think everyone agrees on that one).

SPOILERS BELOW !!!!!

First of all, the point is not to solve the mystery of the monsters. From the beginning it seems to be an impossible task for humans anyway (for example, the remains of the bodies are "not organic" which isn't normally possible, even a burnt body will have organic elements). It's a surnatural event and surnatural does not necessarily have an explanation ! It's supposed to make you uncomfortable because of that !

The point is the interpretation of the surnatural phenomenon. This is something no one can explain, not science, nothing. In our real world, such a thing doesn't exist. Actually in the second half, Min Hyejin (the lawyer) talks about that. The monsters were the starting point (and was enough of a problem itself) but it's the interpretation Jung Jinsu (Yoo Ahin) and the New Truth made of it that truly became a problem. That's what the drama focuses on and it does it very well.

I've also seen people complain about the violence but I found all of it justified here (and I'm not a fan of violence either). Why do the monsters need to beat them so badly ? I'd say both because 1) it makes people fear the monsters even more 2) it mirrors the violence of human beings in the show. Then there's the baby and as soon as the angel visits the baby all I could think about was those 3 gigantic monsters beating a baby to death and that was so dreadful. The violence is supposed to make you uncomfortable and angry (we see so many violent things eveyday, either in real life or on screens, and we barely react to it, the fact that so many people were bothered by it is a sign the drama was well made IMO).

About the plot holes, I haven't really noticed any or anything that bothered me. The more I think about it, the more I find everything happens or is said for a reason. For example, the cop. From (almost) the start we know how important his daughter is to him. He seems pretty nonchalant until he sees the guru talking to her. Then when we have flashbacks his superior tells him to put himself together for her. His daughter is his main priority. When he faces Jung Jinsu at the end of ep 3, he gets a choice : either denounce the New Truth (and probably avoid the state the world is in 4 years later) but have his daughter go to jail for murder or keep his mouth shut and protect her. What happens to him 4 years later ? Is it really important ? Was he the Bruce Willis hero that was gonna save the world ? No ! It's pretty much stated when he tries to shoot the monsters and fails. He's as powerless as everyone else. You can imagine yourself what happens to him. He's probably laying low with his daughter (remember New Truth has evidence on her). 4 years later the police is working with the cult so they are useless anyway. That's why he doesn't reappear, he wouldn't bring anything to the story if he did. I can't really think as anything else that could be considered a plot hole but tell me if you do !

The drama is separated in 2 parts (ep 1-3 et ep 4-6), both related a few days that are crucial in the course of history. Everything happens very fast and I think keeping the drama short adds to the shock of seeing the world crumble in a couples of day (the second part starts really bleak and ends with some hope). That's also why the characters make bad choices, but ultimately you think "what would I have done ?". Would I have accepted to broadcast my death so my kids could be safe ? Would I have sacrificed my family and tell the world the crazy guru was, in fact, a crazy guru ? Would I have done everything I could to protect my baby ?

Other than the story being really interesting and mirroring our own world (christian cults are a big problem in SK but it can be applied anywhere, how some people will take power at the worst of times and how most people will let them because they don't realise what's happening), I thought it was a really good piece of cinema and storytelling. The acting is amazing, like I said there are lots of subtles nods in the dialogues and everything connects very well IMO. The scene where Sohyun (Won Jinah) goes back to protect her baby and later when Youngjae (Park Jungmin) ties all 3 of them together will stay in my mind for a long time. There were a lot of emotions there, love, despair, courage.

It's okay to not like it for the themes but saying it was badly made just shows you missed the point IMHO. I recommend it a lot, it's a drama that will make you think and that is incredibly well made.

The acting of the cast is good. However, along the series, there was not event a hint what the monsters are other that 'they are like earthquake'. But natural disaster does not target any specific person.

All in all, the story telling is comical and pretty bad, for instance, the said cult leader with a religion covering half world population is a total moron without any charm. But, of course, I respect the opinions below that found the show interesting.

Kdramarama Nov 28 2021 11:23 pm Perfect! I do not like violence and there is a lot however the story itself justifies the violence in order to convey a point about the nature of the human psyche. It may seem far fetched however look a little closer and it is actually pretty close to home. Worth a watch if you enjoyed 'The devil Judge' , 'death note' , 'Spawn' from back in the day, pacific rim, Svaha the sixth finger, The Witch, The clover field movies (any of them) and don't mind not having all questions that arise answered at the end...

Yuriyah Nov 28 2021 10:09 pm Honestly, it's a great show, especially for people who like this type of drama or at least open minded since it tackles a pretty sensitive topic of religion and human nature. If you want to watch, don't be discouraged by the negative reviews since most of those reviews came from people who didn't watch the entire thing and are just whiny about it not being their typical drama that shoves every single plot points to their face. But just a quick warning that this show doesn't hold back with violence and it could make you feel uncomfortable if you're not used to it.

Cult, hell, whatever. How can in the first episode they kill a man with poor background? To make it more interesting, start with killing the president or the goverment or someone who have higher power.

Also in the movie, they just killing, make a cult, and everything in Korea. You know in "reality" that monsters will be trending in all country. So make it go to travel different country and involved other country too.

One more, squid game story is more interesting. How can this grey monster surpass squid game?? Y'all never watch squid game or what?

This series just wants to enhance the unjustice and defame the religous groups that are popular in Korean.

Yes, this is definitely the series that is expected to be continued. Yes, there are plot holes and so many questions that are not answered. Yes, it's dark and about blinded by religion people.

But wth people - is it so hard this day to reflect a little on the meaning, to be focused and pushed to THINK during watching something? I am definitely not saying this is an amazing drama but definitely it's really good. Acting is well balanced, filming and photography are absolutely amazing... I felt so many emotions while I watched it and I never ever was even close to this while watching SG (not to mention that the plot of SG has same holes and seriously IMHO people who were surprised by the ending lack imagination).

If you are a fan of straightforward dramas that gives you the clean ending and you don't like being played by the screenwriter and director do not watch it cause you will be very disappointed as so many people below.

Episode 6 suddenly turned into Harry Potter (what the heck moment). The arrowhead violence pretty much describes the korean society in general—especially their cancel culture. But then again, it happens in every culture.

Anyway, they point is—the story is all over the place and yet there’s just 6 episodes?!? Come on, Netflix! You could have cancelled CB Bebop and just made this into a respectable 12 episodes-season at least. If only to explain the creatures.

All in all, 6/10. (Points mostly for cinematography)

At times the violence was a bit much for me (especially violence against the elderly) but overall I really enjoyed how intense it was and I think there will be a season 2 to answer some of the questions that still remain. I was captivated the whole time and was glad it was only 6 episodes because it was just the right amount before getting annoyed at the senseless violence.

minji Nov 23 2021 10:09 pm I had to skip all the Arrowhead livestream because his screaming gave me so much anxiety. His screen time was way too much. I pretty much agree with the comments here. The story makes no sense and it's confusing. But it is the way it is because of the theme of the story. They could've give us a background story or something about why the creatures were doing that. If they were killing people even though they didn't commit any sin in their lifetime, what's the point of going to hell? If they were killing people because of the original sin, which btw is repayed by death itself that could be from sickness, accidents, etc, that happens to all of us, what's the point of killing them ahead of their time? I'm impressed of how accurate religious groups are portrayed, though. And how scary they could be using anything to their advantage. I'm wondering what happened to Kyunghoon and his daughter Heejung. Lastly, we need explanation what kind of miracle happened to the baby and Jungja. Definitely needs Season 2 with a proper storyline PLEASE.

blue665 Nov 23 2021 4:29 pm I have mixed feelings about this. The story is meaningless, I agree with other people. It's kind of like an open storyline. You don't know which direction it will go and what the actual point of the plot is. People are receiving a decree and dying on no basis, no rules. It's murder combined with twisted religious beliefs. I would have liked it more if it actually made more sense, if it had a solid base to hold on to. It might be explained in season 2. The last episode gave me a big wtf moment but it was actually starting to be pretty damn cool and I would be interested to know more. It's an adult drama with dark and depressing tones, watch it with that in mind. But it's also pretty cringey. Especially the Arrowhead live stream was just too much. The drama was more funny to me than scary at times, but I like to see the Korean cinema experimenting with different genres and things. You gotta love their creativity.

What does hell actually represent? It represents the concept of the must excruciating pain and suffering imaginable that never ever ends. Couple that concept with that this sentence is given you my a being that by definition is just, and the ultimate authority, so if you are given it, it's because you deserve it. Absolutely no possibility of appeal, pardon, or sentence reversal. The average human lifespan is around 60 to 90 years or so. Just to subject any human no matter what they have done to such a sentence? It's seems many would think so. I can't agree. I find this series highly disturbing but thought provoking. I am trying to be objective but find it extremely challenging while watching it.

Especially the teenager, they knew that sin makes you go to hell but wth they still hurting people? It’s an intriguing drama with a concept that I’ve never heard of before. And yes, it has some plot holes and issues but it’s not enough to render the show as ‘terrible’, as some critics have been saying.

The start is slow but picks up speed pretty quickly with episode 2. Being only 6 episodes, if you’re into this genre and want something to binge-watch, give this a go. There are some unexpected twists, some which really did my head in, and a lot is left to think about.

I hope we get a season 2 because the final episode most DEFINITELY needs some explaining.

bella Nov 22 2021 11:13 pm i binged watch this from 10:30 pm to 3 am... people have been saying negative review on this series but for me it was really good and thought provoking type. although the creatures and their cruel killing may be unreal but the portrayal of how human reacts to this seems real to me. Everything is not black and white in real life... i felt the frustrations and hatred to that cults religion and those people who blindly follow it. in real life also, some people take sides regardless of right and wrong. I also felt that this is not completed one so will wait for season 2 for why those creatures exist. Watch this and see if it is your type of genre or not.

I read comments here about how it isn't good, and I must say this series is actually a mature content rather than just character developments and happy endings and the evil musn't prevail etc. It may be a shame that it's only 6 episodes and the lack of character development they must say, but it doesn't need those coz it's shown as a whole portrayal of our society and human nature too. This series tells more about religion, meanings of life, beliefs of the human in God, how we interpret events and why there are misfortunes happening to random people (good/bad), and how our beliefs as a human affects our actions towards each other. This is more like existentialism and the portrayal of morality. One of the lesson/point of this series was actually said by the Professor in ep5 i think, when he was talking to Park Jungmin on why these events are happening. So I think this drama may be appreciated more by the people who are a bit mature enough to understand how the world and the universe really works, regardless of age.

It’s really good. There is CLEARLY nothing realistic about it and at first the dogmatic behavior of the public and the complete lack of interference from the Korean authorities was pissing me off. But once I decided to just see it as an “alternate world” kind of show I was able to simply enjoy it. It’s very well done and I’m so looking forward to the next season. I hope they already filmed them ?.

I just finished binge watching it and it's so good. I can think of a thousand possible meaning to the ending, I can think of meanings from a religious perspective and a non religious perspective. Could mean that the sinners are born again or that the decree was false, the parents of the child who sacrificed themself saved their child and the world. This could be the solution Jung Jin Soo was searching for. The driver at the end could be "someone important".

I really hope this show has a season 2 because there's so much potential and I hope people will stop down-rating it just because they don't have the capacity to understand.

It’s exactly like the webtoon and the storyline actually progresses fast like a roller coaster. It will start off fast but then it slows down a bit then picks up the speed immediately. It will get you hooked because you’re going to be curious and want to know what’s going to happen to these people and how their lives will change when their fates are being met. The actors did such a good job portraying these fragile yet cruel characters. I highly recommend only if you can handle very deep and dark violence/themes. It’s definitely not like Squid Game for sure, but to me it’s gruesome just like how the story is. I arguably find this show’s plot much better than Squid Game as well. 10/10 and cannot wait for the second season especially after the ending of ep 6

Other reviews will say that it is deep or how good it is in tackling philosophies on religion, cults, etc. In reality, many of the series "philosophies" doesn't make sense and have easy counter-logic behind them. I dunno but this felt like sweet home was done very bad and more confusing. The series point of god judgement is fair and square is countered with the targeted murder on only a few people, and based on what? it's not even judgement, it's only execution. And asking for a friend, will people be stupid enough to follow what a man with neon lipstick said behind a webcam?

It describe perfectly how people would react when event like this would happen. People only believe when they see things with their eyes which describes today's society. The fear felt by the society would also apply in real life. The fear made us did and trusted ridiculous thing. Although the series contain so much violent, it made us learn how serious things can be when it comes to manpower and manipulation.
