"Idol: The Coup" depicts an unpopular idol group's last story. To disband the group Cotton Candy, the group needs only a one time hit. People that are important to the story include Kim Je-Na (Ahn Hee-Yeon), who has been a member of Cotton Candy for the past 6 years. Cha Jae-Hyuk (Kwak Si-Yang) is the CEO of the entertainment company which manages Cotton Candy. Seo Ji-Han (Kim Min-Kyu) is a member of the popular idol group Mas, which belongs to the same entertainment company as Cotton Candy.

philmb Mar 11 2026 12:05 pm One of the most undererated KDramas out there as far as im concerened. Loved it. Yep a lot of conflict, but i can see why. They hated there preivious lives, they made this new one to escape. Unfortunalty, this new life is crumbling rite in front of them. They are all damaged and they all have there issues and baggage. I was rooting for all of them by the end haha. Cotton Candy Fighting hahaha.

ASHH Dec 17 2024 10:14 pm I almost dropped this drama. Almost. Yet I stayed cause I think it's still worth it. It just that for 12 episodes, there were so much going on. Conflict after conflict. Problem after problem. I think there were too much it became unrealistic. The writer/s must have want to explore thos scenes yet I don't think it's that effective. Actors were good. Some scenes made me cry. OSTs were great. It just the storyline and conflicts are quite absurd. But I will still recommend this to others. It's still worth a try.

Having a loud fight for every other scene is one of the worst ways to create tension. Its weight and impact diminish and become redundant the more they result to the same tactics.

The lukewarm fondness of CEO Cha to Jena is sooo interesting to be deepened or continued. His small gestures of care and concern is grand enough to be heart-touching—makes us craving for more deep view into their relationship, no? And besides of that thing that (I admit) I've might romanticizing too little bit, I want to see how it goes for Cotton Candy members with their new occupation. Seems worthy to be made to chicklit drama like Age of Youth or Be Melodramatic.

Water May 16 2022 8:31 am Lead roles wise, I love how they positioned Jena's character and appearance so flexible and neutral, that when she's with CEO Cha she doesn't look like a sugar baby, and when she's with Jihan she doesn't look like a sugar mommy. One of the few triangle tropes where I can't take sides. They took "I am at the age where I can date the dad or the son" very well here ㅋㅋㅋ Overall fine packaging of this kind of drama. It's interesting to watch with all its ups and downs.

Or maybe it's just for me, the 2nd Gen fan that no longer into kpop after my favorite groups either disband or just... gone. So, yeah, it really hits home, right in the feels. In the beginning of the episode I was so mad at Jena, I hate seeing her suffer. Towards the end I still hate seeing her suffet but God... My heart really goes for her, I'm fcking cry I didn't even see those tears coming. I decide to watch this with no expectations at all, but that was a good start... A little bit too personal actually since I was fan of those kind of groups haha sad :'D overall it's good depiction, a tribute to those kind of groups IRL

Sam Kun Mar 05 2022 4:05 pm For a Kpop drama this drama is very intense and dramatic. I was hesitant in watching it but I was really wrong as it's a very very good drama. For me it's the best drama of 2021. It reminds me of Dream High but more dramatic. They nailed everything from the acting, the story and the OSTs. This drama reminds me the old japanese dramas that I really loved many years ago as it's a slice of life one where everyone is fighting for their future despite hardships. 10/10 for me.

jihan Jan 27 2022 3:03 pm This drama made me bawled my eyes out. I watch bad and crazy in the morning, and this in the evening coz i just want to cry. I cry everytime du-ho shows up after the incident. Like, the acting is surreal. You just find yourself crying as well when Hani cries. I just find it amusing that the Cotton Candy's leader have her own ways to handle problems. That she always look at the positive side of everything. I need that kind of mindset. For Kim Min Kyu, he improved a lot from Produce X101 up until now, His acting is becoming more and more natural. I didnt expect that tbh. The soundtracks... Mars' Cloud9 is my favorite. The song with chae-a is quite good too. Chae-a looks like Jisoo of Blackpink and HyunJi looks like Girls Day Hyeri. I became a fan of Chae-A throughout the series. Good Job All In All!

I was looking forward to the story of CEO cha and Jenna, but it ended. I wish they make the season 2. Plus we don't know the past of Jenna and in one of the episode she said that if they make it to the top music show, she wanna find her parents and see their reactions. She said that she wanna see them guilty and make them feel regret for they did to her.

This Is The Real Deal Dec 15 2021 12:04 am This drama is like damn underrated. Everything from their acting to their OST are like excellent. I’m sure if it by any chance made it to Netflix there will be more people viewing. The start of the drama has too many conflicts in my opinion, like Elle (Kang Yu Ri) and cotton candy have a love hate relationship so that leaves too less content for the following episodes. I know there is like an impossible chance that there might be a season 2 seeing it’s a k drama but that doesn’t stop me from wishing there might be. I also like how the drama doesn’t focus on romance unlike most k dramas but more on the journey of cotton candy getting no.1. Finally, I thought it was really sad that they disbanded and went their different ways although they didn’t get no.1. Will definitely recommend this Amazing drama to others!

It's a great drama , catchy songs, great story and very entertaining altho 2 episodes finale was a bit rush seems like they just wants to find another conflicts to spice up the story, it's unnecessary. I wish they will be season 2, I know it's focused on cotton candy not romance but I would love to see Jena and CEO cha story more, if its end there, it feels incomplete, so please, please make season 2

The idol actors did a pretty decent job (esp hani and solbin), and the supporting seasoned actors made sure it stayed a legit tv shows. My only gripe is they spent too little time on Stella's past (The resolution was too abrupt) and on Hyunji-grandma's story (we knew it was coming but they just plopped it there at the end out of nowhere).

Actually this drama is great, it tackles the hardships of the idols and the things they consider in their lives. It's time for the artists' personal lives and struggles be heard. It's sad that this drama as well as Imitation got low ratings despite having idols as leads. These dramas discusses the real life or possible situation of idols' lives. Then again, I wish that the soundtracks will be released and there will be live performances for it, please. Congratulations to the whole team and the team behind it and the songs.

The cast have done a superb job in playing their roles.. I usually give up most of the Idol dramas in the middle cus the plot starts to become boring...but this plot is really interesting..looking forward to watch the next few eps..

A true Idol follower will complain it is not realistic and not portrays a real world of idols. But, Look! It's Beautiful.The plot, the casts, the music. It's a drama, not a Documentary. They are idols but they act. And they are real- life Cotton Candies. Just give them a round of applause. They deserve it.

This drama is also about idols with idols actors and actresses which is what knetz hate as they think idols cant and shouldnt act.

Even Misaeng, drama from the same writer didn't have any lovelines and still being one of the best drama of this generation.

The story is very heavy in the first 4 episodes, we can guess the loveline but no one can guess the story, on each episode we will see their new obstacle. Plus I really like Jenna character! She is indeed a leader, she is mature, persistent, smart, and decision maker.

In this drama, I feel sad to their group (cotton candy) as I can feel the emotions and how they portray their roles perfectly. There's a lot of failed idol in korea or even not that famous. I hope you bear it and claim your success in the future!!

Huh Nov 15 2021 12:20 pm By far the best and most interesting kdrama about idols. I shed a lot of tear on the first two episodes. The role of Doo Ho and the actor made me wept as well. Hani is so good. I just dislike the other members of cotton candy but their acting is convincing. I hate the mangnae, she's so whiny and annoying, a typical bitch who blames everything on others without doing anything to actually help fix the problem. I recommend this!!!

And I hope they won't lose their hope and keep fighting until their hard work paid off. the actress and actors who were debuted but unfortunately didn't make it through I know someday you can be a star your dreaming of love you guys I hope this drama will hit off because I know there are many people out there who is suffering and feel the same as cotton candy I hope this drama will reach their heart and keep fighting I will share you my motto "try and try until you succeed".

Otherwise, I think the actresses selected for Cotton Candy are spot on. I think Hani, Solbin, Exy, Han Soeun and Green have done great for the first episode so far. I hope this drama would be one of the best this year.
