It all starts with a simple lie. The lie leads Yu-Mi (Bae Suzy) to live a completely different life. Her husband is Ji-Hun (Kim Jun-Han). He is an ambitious man, who pursues a goal-oriented life. Yu-Mi is friends with Ji-Won (Park Ye-Young). Ji-Won is the only person Yu-Mi can trust and rely on.

Meanwhile Hyun-Joo (Jung Eun-Chae) enjoys her superior life, without any considerations or malice to others.

Kristine Apr 13 2024 10:34 am I’m watching directors cut over and over and it just dawned on me how suspicious Anna’s mother’s death is. I think JiHoon behind it. The moment he wins she gets a call to come to her mother? If he was trying to cover up the questions just asked about Anna being her real name when the boss was grilling the assistant for the bribery revelation he asked her to look into the calls asking is Anna was her real name. We know the husband admitted he knew everything about her real past with the scandal about the school paper coming out. That he admitted to knowing she was being blackmailed. He knew the location of the nursing home when Anna said she had to go to her mom that she could not get on that plane and he sent someone else in her place, they later called and said she passed. I just find the timing fishy. Such a brilliant story. Don’t mean to add to it. He does have a pattern.

Kristine Jan 27 2024 12:41 pm I really enjoyed the directors cut. Did not watch the other version. “Poker face”. Ji Won is a favorite character. This is certainly a story about waiting for and jumping on life’s chances, like the desert scene. Wow, that was satisfying to watch. The thing is she would have probably got accepted if she just changed her major like the art teacher said to.

Wolfie Dec 10 2023 5:41 am So many comments! Jung Han-A wrote a brilliant story. How a hunger for social status can make a person go so far. Yu mi is an academic failure but a street smart character with one special tactic: poker/blank face "do not let others know what you think/feel.

I watched this for Eun chae, but her charisma just like dimmed by Suzy's slowly dominating poker face charisma. Eun chae really need to work harder in her next projects. Good luck, Eun chae.

I recommend this drama to all who like to eatch suspence and revenge dramas because thus series has a vibe of revenge and thrilling. No wonder suzy has been nominated for the best actress at Baeksang awards 2022 for her role of Anna.

This is such a beautiful drama. It really shows the cycle of lies. There are a lot of loops and a lot of things that are like visual metaphors such as when Yumi tries her boss' shoes as if she wants to be in her shoes, rich and educated. After that I think the most beautiful metaphor was when she decided to take the stairs when she met again with her ex-boss after she had already stole her identity. Maybe I looked too in depth into these images but I think it is all very beautifully made.

One last thing that I really really liked was the deer that was representing her mother and her mother's dream in the episode where they hit a deer. I really liked that motive of reincarnation or prediction if you will.

Overall, a very nice drama, a cute binge and a lot of metaphors for the society and how it works in such a short drama.

rae Jan 03 2023 12:35 am minor nitpick but why did they make the real Anna’s daughter as a half Korean girl? Her mother is still ethnically fully Korean and so was the dad since they showed him as well. Was that supposed to be her step-dad or did Anna cheat lol

A…NA Nov 13 2022 5:08 am I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this drama. It didn’t quite remind me of Korean dramas but of some art movies from France and Japan. Korean dramas in recent years have mostly been badly written and/or just of a mediocre overall film making.

Anna tells the story of a young girl unsatisfied of her social standing and coveted what did not belong to her; achieving her goals not through hard work but through cheating and lying. Living another rich girl’s life, she eventually married a man for even higher status. It is dark, narrating many years of her life.

Suzy threw in a good performance as Anna. The drama’s obvious acting failure came from a small role acted by the actress playing the colonel’s wife. All English speaking lines was also terrible by all actors. Can’t make out what was spoken. This is a common problem of Korean dramas.

Had watched the series from Coupang’s Version and liked it. Saw only a little of ep 1 of the Director’s Cut version and even though it’s lengthier thus more detailed, it took away the artsy and dark feel and was a little more Korean dramatic style so I stopped. But I heard that the real difference is from ep 4 onwards so maybe I would catch that when the mood comes.

The truth is that many things in our society are based on semblance and that's thing which let people like Anna makes career (I get to know similar people, one daring enough to make similar shit in global corporation) although it becomes a bit harder for them because it is easier to verify information.

Like we see at the beginning it is suggested that Anna wants to study art not because she has talent or it is her passion but because she like idea itself that she becomes art historian. In other words she is driven by snobism (social position which can be connected with this job if someone is lucky) not passion. She changed her choice of school abruptly and teacher tried to change her decision because he read her real intentions. She didn't get to University first time because she was shocked by all situation with teacher-boyfriend and because she attended better school. She had big ego and thought that she is very good student but she ended up in Seul where level of education was much higher than in her town (it is very often situation when kid ends up in better school and loses confidence because he can't keep up with rest so he has breakdown). But her next fails happens because she didn't study seriously. And that's because she got social standing of what she wanted or to be precisely disguise of it. She pretended to be a student of good university because that was easier for her than to tell truth and because her first reason of attending University was changing her social position not passion for knowledge or idea of helping financially her family (she would choose other subject otherwise). The truth is that anyone can pretend to be specialist in theoretically easy to understand and pretty subjective subject if he is a bit smart and confident thanks to access to information in internet (it is definitely easier to pretend to be art historian than physician). What helped Anna that people around her where pretty similar to her. She got first job thanks to Anna's family background. Professor helped her although she knew how bad student real Anna was and that her diploma is fiction bought by money.

It is not coincidence that Anna is art historian and her husband is politician. In both semblances play even bigger role than normally because bullshiting is a bit part of their job. Semblances are also still probably part of Korean Universities especially that connected to art. My friend told me that she was shocked by expensive instruments of Korean exchange students and at the same time low level of skills of their owners. Not because Koreans are bad at music but because at least at that time you have to have connections and money to be send to foreign University especially in Europe.

I don't want to spoil it for the rest, so I'll say not much more beyond I'm glad I watched the 8 episode director's cut.

-amazing plot and storyline. Super smooth. Everything was well explained. -some scene are lenghty but they r beautiful and has deep meaning to it. -im often reminded to Parasite the movie throughout the show. Anna potray two sides of story, the rich and the poor, the ambitious and the soulless. -the ending was happy for anna@yumi but some may thinks she deserves to be punish.

Really really recommended.

It was very different from what I expected. This is not a romance drama or anything I imagined. This is about Politics. I was always on edge when will she be caught and she didn't. I think this story is very impossible considering what she did wasn't a complicated identity theft.

What really disappointed me the most is that I don't know what is the point of the story. She doesn't even have a goal. I don't know if she wanted to be in a place where she would be happy. She doesn't have a dream and motivation so how did things go according to her way. She's not even happy about everything she attained. I don't know what's the point of the story.

Lee Yumi symbolizes people who are hardworking and tired but can't achieve her dreams bc of obstacles...she's ambitious and envious, she lied to achieve want she wanted but didn't achieve happiness.

loey Jul 06 2022 8:48 am This drama have a lot of symbolism. I love how each character builds up every episode depicting real scenarios we are facing today. All of the characters were portrayed very well and special mention to Suzy. I've been following her acting career since then and as always she always deliver. Storywise, it was very deep and heavy. It has so much social issues that are being incorporated that have much relevance in our society. The couple from the very beginning clearly shows how Yumi grew. The woman somewhat groomed yumi from being a fake herself. Can't wait to watch the remaining two eps and I believe 6 eps are enough to tell the story without exaggerations. Kudos to the director and the writer!!!

And, Bae Suzy is impressive! She is so good, the emotion deliver, the movement and the voice is perfect!

vale Jul 05 2022 1:49 pm This drama resonates so much to me and my environment. I grew up thinking what if I lived a life like Anna. And my environment revolves around corrupted politicians too. I have learnt a lot psychologically from this drama. I am waiting for the next episode and I want to see how the environment shaped Anna (yoomi) and how well she took it. This drama have the same concept as Penthouse but more realistic. Sad how the world works anyway.

Despite having no experience in teaching whatsoever and has never been taught by actual art professors from high class universities, she was still able to be an excellent tutor for her students that she could send them abroad. Even with only researching the topic in Google she was able to be great at her lecture as a professor. She lies so convincingly it's crazy.

Byeol 별 Jul 05 2022 9:46 am honestly, i feel bad for Yumi. she was groomed by her teacher and she received all the blame for it. when she transferred thats when her life went downhill and she started getting less motivated. but ever since that moment where she lied to her father, "I got accepted to university" she couldn't stop lying. it's sad because her father believed until he died that his daughter is smart and is studying in the US. meanwhile Yumi used up the money she got from her father to buy clothes and makeup.

Your objections on her failure at exams are valid, she is just a 3rd grade conwoman who is extremely dumb, always acting like a thief using her circumstances as an excuse, but significance of brit couple can't be ignored. It also is crucial to learn that brit woman fakes her identity and teaches yumi to learn to make poker face when lying etc, yumi learns this stuff from her and does her own version.

As of journalist not discovering stuff, yes many things are weird like how she faked she's a student at that university where her journo sunbae goes, secondly how she got her yale fake degrees forged and did noone ask for certification and verification of degrees. But in genwral she remains hudden as noone ever thinka about digging her past out.

Whatever, Anna’s got great characters, a decent storyline and wonderful aesthetics. From Anna, what I feel and see is quality of acting, quality of directing and what really a quality project is. It’s a Must Watch Drama if you like high quality projects.

sf Jul 02 2022 8:33 pm I don't know what was the purpose of the British couple from the beginning of the first episode. Many people considered YM to be smart, but she failed many exams. She says that she does everything her mindset to. Well, she failed in everything, becoming a servant. When she was discovered by Hyun-Joo, instantly she lost her rich person attitude and she took again her servant look. So-called her friend, Han Ji-Won, who is a political journalist, didn't find any news about YM or Anna before somebody else told her about it. The plot has so many childish errors that I think it was written when the writer was drunk.
