In-Ji (Seo Hyun-Jin) works for contract marriage provider NM. The company provides its clients with a spouse for a fixed-term 1 year contract marriage. In-Ji has finished her 4th contract marriage. She meets Jung-Won (Gong Yoo) for her 5th contract marriage. Jung-Won works as a music producer. His life is filled with anxiety and loneliness due to the pain from his past. He still badly misses his ex-wife Seo-Yeon, who applied for the spouse providing company NM for him. Jung-Won meets In-Ji from NM and he begins his second marriage with her. They get to know each other and used to each other as time passes. One day, a mysterious trunk is recovered from a lake. This leads them into a whirlwind of secrets behind the NM company.

Kdrama Llama Feb 25 2025 2:08 am An unconventional, grown up drama with something quietly compelling about it. The show looked amazing in terms of the cinematography and I loved in-ji as a character, the original wife, not so much, she was exhausting and totally crazy! What an outlandish revenge plan she cooked up!

I started the show for Gong Yoo and I wasn’t disappointed in his performance of a deeply traumatised man but there’s just something that left me a bit empty and unsatisfied at the end, perhaps it was the wholetrunk thing, which was not as central to the story as I expected or as e.g. the chandelier?

I’m glad I watched it but I don’t think I will rewatch in the future.

I can’t say I didn’t like it despite the many unanswered questions e.g. what was inside that trunk? Just to answer your question with regard to Yoo In-Yeong, the way I see it, she was a colleague of Noh In-ji, who got pregnant by a client (fake husband), whilst the real husband did not want the baby so she had to live alone. This is merely my personal opinion but I can’t think of anything else.

You just make 2 your dramas as my fave drama all the times, The Trunk and Its alright its love It feel like watching Park Chan Wook movies ? Love the vibes, the cutting of scenes, the EDM music, back and foward plot. Its like a onion, peel it one by one in the very slow pace. Even the character have to peel it layer by layer. I rare found kdrama lately that hooked me since my dearest. Too bad not all viewer could understand the series and give negative reviews. Watch all the eps just in 2 days in rows, could do in one sit actually ?

The drama was quite underwhelming considering the heavy topics, characters felt empty and it was hard to sympathise with them. I think because of the random cuts and offsetting music, you don't really create a connection with the characters. Such a waste of a cast full excellent actors...

zenzen Jan 07 2025 12:04 am im not finished with this and I'm not sure if I can. I keep getting bored and the pacing of the story is off. I've seen other shows experiment with the same pacing and mixed timelines, and those were executed beautifully, however, this show does not do that. The music actually makes the scenes less intense and it very distracting lol. why is every character a brick wall? I see a lot of potential and I want to like it. I think if the editing was a little better it would help the show significantly. Also, the subtitles are atrocious. I need Netflix to stop with these ai subtitles or whatever they're doing cause its sooooo bad and makes everything hard to understand.

For me, The Trunk was an extraordinary experience—deeply moving, visually mesmerizing, and thought-provoking. It’s unfortunate that some fail to appreciate these qualities, as The Trunk is a genuine masterpiece that I wholeheartedly recommend.

Agatsuma Dec 26 2024 1:22 pm The thing is, this is the most unique and phychologically dense drama I`ve seen in a while. And that`s why it is so good. The suspense is inbued in the architecture, in the silence between the characters, in the slow paced story. People are used to cliche happy endings or catastrophic tragic endings and fast paced, cliffhanger-kinda episodes. This show has had the courage to do something different: talk about many taboo themes, and also about how people have to learn how to be happy by themselves Before starting a healthy relationship. This drama talks about codependency in relationships, a theme rarely talked about in series because it is anti-climatic and not romantic at all. It is easy to go to the ``a nice relationship cures all``, but in reality, it is the contrary. Broken people lead to broken relationships. You have to mend your pieces and glue them back before trying to stack the cups together.

Ritchie Rich Dec 24 2024 10:10 am A waste if time. I forced myself to watch the second episode because I had already started watching in the hopes that it would get better, but turned it off, thumbed it down, and removed it from my watchlist after just a few minutes.

None of the characters seemed either interesting or endearing and I turned it off when I realized that I didn't care what happened to them nor care about the story outcome.

Jassy Dec 24 2024 8:31 am I was looking forward to seeing Gong Yoo again as a main character. However, this tv drama is a huge disappointment. The story line is very sloppy. Diverse topics that have been adressed briefly in the beginning remained without significance to the entire story (like the drug issue). The ending doesn't make sense to me - justing putting a side character into jail for murder instead of the main character who should have been there in first place? And what the heck is it about the trunk and the stalker in the middle of a field? What was the break up for? And who decided to put Gong Yoo in these ugly pants at the last scene? This drama is nothing more but a show off of wealth. I didn't really feel the characters.

stand-in-nudescene Dec 22 2024 12:53 pm For a brief moment, I thought Jung Yun Ha did the nude scene in Ep 2 for real by herself (though this scene seems not necessary) that said I'm sure they used a stand in for this scene. Anyway, this series are worth watching, even tough they're several unnecessary scenes and characters (nude scene ep 2 and In Ji's deceased friend) the coincidences between Jeong Won and In Ji in the past to make them tied up in love sickness seems lacking of reason and momentum.

eeyao Dec 19 2024 12:52 am you might think with the premise of the mysterious trunk and the two top-billing actors that this would be an interesting show. it's aggressively bland. it was a struggle to get through all eight episodes. also, the electronic music sucks and made me lol every time it would show up to make a scene more stylish and edgy.

Yes there is a sense of heightened tension dramatised for the series, but in turn it addresses some of the common issues within their society: Ruining a person's life by posting personal stuff on Daum or Naver and the cancel culture that follows, the authoritative lifestyle by Gong Yoo's father where children growing up have no idea to be better male figures, stalker issues women face (the place where Seo Yin Ji's character lives typically these type of households have lesser surveillance and stalkers can bypass the existing security), Korea's tolerance to LGBTQ even though her ex was Bi, overdoing culture which mostly the rich affords and does it ever so discreetly. I get why Netflix could do it, and JTBC can't do some of the scenes, just like howbthe story of The Glory was shown.

I really liked it and finished it in two days the cast are amazing and the show us the the real feelings and the way of each character & the music itself is amazing and give some kind of wierdo .. but as I said not everyone will see the magic of this type of drama I really liked that I had the chance ti watch this masterpiece ??

This is not your typical K-drama, which some viewers might expect. If you're watching solely for Gong Yoo, you might want to skip it and choose another drama, as the story delves deeply into the psychological issues and past traumas of the main characters. Btw I'm watching this because of Seo Hyun Jin.

Some viewers might feel that the nudity is unnecessary, but for me, that's not the main focus of the show. Each scene is crafted to explore the nuances of each character. What else would you expect from a drama rated 18+? After all, it's a Netflix production, and they are known for including bold and explicit content in their movies and dramas.

La Bella Dec 09 2024 3:45 am Just finished! This drama was not for everyone. The plot will not suit for unpatient viewers. The casts were stunning?? and the story was so warmth. Every scenes develop well, thanx to the perfect acting. This drama will be a perfect choice for binge watcher. Not suit for under 18 (both story and scene)

trebuchette Dec 08 2024 4:58 pm Probably one of the best this year! Might or might not be biased since I love Seo Hyun Jin, but the chemistry between the leads, the acting, the emotions, the lines.. Whew. I would also like to commend the actor who played Ji-O. If I recall correctly, this was his first project. One might think he was casted for his good looks, but he had his own subtle intensity as well. Everyone did really good, 'nuff said.

Just a quick question, though: what was the connection between In-Ji and the pregnant North Korean? I might've missed the part where it was mentioned.

Well made drama. Love how they arrange the plot making me engage. But minus point for quite a number of unnecessary nudity scene. But the love of main couple is comforting so i would still give it the tittle as my top kdrama of 2024. N gongyoo ajushi is so lurve

I should probably wait to write this review and let my experience “marinate.” Not sure of the genre…suspense…mystery…art film …I always considered myself relatively smart until this drama…not so much now…I was left with the feeling I missed it all…everything obvious had a hidden secret. The casting was excellent, the story dark and for me who always searches for the meaning of things, an enigma. I will be back for another watch. If you’re into dark art films well written with some very talented actors, go for it. Get me a guide book for The Trunk.

Zeus Dec 07 2024 4:53 pm A Gem!!! 10/10 This mysterious dark mature drama will not be appreciated by everyone, especially i think the younger generation. I loved every bit of it. Finally for once not a cheesy childish drama. The plot / story is heavy but fantastic, OST beautiful and the cast is top. And of course one of my fav k-actors: Gong Yoo, not only handsome and sexy but a great actor, i just love him. I wish we could have more of his dramas/movies available over here in Belgium, unfortunately it is very limited. Highly recommended!! A fan from ??

The lead actors are exceptionally good, so well convey their caracters, this drama was one of the rare ones that had me completely hooked in.

Toxic relationship and nudity scene shows everywhere, its quite irritating, although I'm mature enough still it wasn't uncomfortable to see, sigh.

Storyline is very good and unique.. This drama is not for people who limit themselves to Romcom and doesn’t know how to appreciate a true good drama.. Those who commented this drama is boring are those kind of people who are stuck to Boys Over Flower type of drama.. Level up people

It's not a drama for all, and some will find it too slow and a storyline that has no meaning. However, I believe if you give it a chance, you might just start to enjoy this drama by the time you get to the end.

I dont like gong yoo personally but the drama deepness and physological tense really got me. It doesnt trying at all to impress, which how it impress me so much.

Love it. Easy 9/10 But I wont recommend for anyone. Unless you are solo binge watching in one go in one night. Then only you will get the dark humours and deep emotions that this drama has to offer.

LOL Dec 02 2024 3:49 am I drop this after the first two episodes. It was too slow and digressive too me. I love the two main lead, I think they're really good actors and they were good in this too, but the story wasn't likeable to me. I thought it's gonna be like the Little Women, a little mystery, a little romance with dark and interesting characters, and in a part these are in it in the The Trunk, but the atmosphere and the story-line isn't quite the same.

Rai Feb 20 2024 11:38 pm Did anyone even watch Love in Contract?? You can't even compare this as she works for a company, not herself. As far as we know, In Ji is not a project like PMY was. Jung Won ex wife signed him up, the ml in Love in Contract signed up on his own as. Not to mention there are tons of other contract dramas out there. And then there's the trunk. This could be a horror drama for all we know. (Let's be honest it's a melodrama but who cares, you get the point)

I don't mind age gap in a love story, but lately all great actors have been paired with new young people and it got really boring. I assume producers want to attract different viewers but will end up losing all of us.
