Lee Heon (Kim Young-Dae) is the king of Joseon. 7 years ago, when he was a crown prince, his beloved wife died. To this day, he has not been able to get over her death. For the past 7 years, the royal family and government members have tried to get King Lee Heon remarried without success. The nation has also implemented a geumhonryung edict, which is a ban on all single women marrying during this time when the king has not married. People are furious over the marriage ban. One day, King Lee Heon hears of a woman named Ye So-Rang (Park Ju-Hyun), who claims the spirit of the king's late wife exists within the royal palace.

Meanwhile, Ye So-Rang is a swindler and claims to interpret martial harmony signs. She is arrested and jailed where Officer Lee Shin-Won (Kim Woo-Seok) works. To get out of her predicament, she pretends to be possessed by a spirit in front of Lee Shin-Won. During her ruse, she mentions that the spirit of King Lee Heon's late wife exists within the royal palace. She is then brought in front of the king and he asks her if she can really see his late wife's spirit. To survive, Ye So-Rang acts like her body is possessed by the king's late wife. Ye So-Rang's lies get bigger and more audacious.

Ep 7 & 8 will not air during the weekend of December 30 & 31, 2022. The two episodes will air the following weekend on January 6 & 7, 2023. The 2022 MBC Drama Awards and the MBC Music Festival airs in its place on December 30 & 31, 2022.

Gugu Mon Apr 26 2026 1:37 pm Very mixed. Some bits are nice. Main problem: The whole thing is designed as a drama-comedy crossover, and that almost never really works. A number of scenes are overly silly, or parody without intention. Overall, the series is saved from a total stall by female lead Park Ju-Hyun, who somehow balances drama and comedy by seamlessly shifting from one to the other even in the same scene. Quite a feat, and the series is worth watching, if at all, for this actress' remarkable prowess. Really a good actress. But summarizing, her talent is quite a bit wasted in view of the non-functioning premise of the narrative.

I've always fallen short in articulation, however, I finished all 12 episodes in its goofiness and wrapping of fluffiness. It is strange, even to myself, that, after long years of lurking in the digital sphere, only occassionally letting those outbursts of a devotee, I have finally succumbed to being a wiki-warrior. (Please don't ban me).

My humble request to not be banned is for the obvious SPOILERS I spew. I do not wish for anyone to be dissuaded from watching since it is exactly what you might expect from a show like this. Brain rot, but cutesy!

My man Shin-won gets what he deserved. Hwa-yoon arrived as a deus-ex-m but gotta say love the girl's spunk. What she says - louder for the peole in the back - it is not the victim's fault! The wait seemed worthwhile (kinda forced but hey what can we do)... and I'm just happy my man Shin-won got the kind of girl he wants. Also, and I read about this somewhere, my man Shin-won with hair down looked as good as the other viewers stated! Gotta love a hottie with long hair! On the topic of hotties ... they didn't forget them even at the end, although fat lot of good they did for the story but I love this soft launching. I am watching this stuff for this exact reason! Gimme this service!

Zed Apr 05 2025 3:13 am Before I started watching the drama it felt the story would go in a direction and have FL end up with who appears to be the SML. Honestly, I was disappointed. I truly enjoy watching Kim Yong-dae, especially since I recently watched his show with Shin Min-a. But I digress. Anyways, once I started watching the show, I found myself rooting for Shin-won. Poor bloke has kept his bride-to-be in his heart (couldn't have done much thanks to the marriage ban); nonetheless he kept those emotions and managed to hone in on So-rang. Especially the first few episodes, their proximity and interaction felt very couple charged.

Yes, I know love is unpredictable and this is a fictional show but So-rang's audacity around the king and her deliberation of emotions towards the King seemed fallacious, even within the scope of this dramaverse. Like, is she truly in a position to demand the King's affection? All dandy that the King felt the same - and on his part it still made a bit of sense as he is in a position to demand certain things. Although the 7 year non-compliance in his role as the King should have been forced to abdicate! But I should not get too political about that fictional world. So far my poor man Chun-Sseok died from assassin's attach and the innocent gisaeng Cha Nyun, lookalike of the late crown princess has been murdered. This show better get them justice! Actually, I hope I didn't miss any justice as I'm somewhere in episode 8 after skipping bits, cause the villains are just too boring and feel like a waste time of time - particularly with the vibe of the show. I'm here for comedy not evil, pompous excuses of humans!

Getting back to dear Shin-won. He feels more dreamy than I'd have ever guessed and going against the King was strangely hot. Actually, both men seemed oddly alluring. Kim Woo-seok did a great job of portraying the anguish of love rivalry and unrequited love. Korean actors always do such a great job! His character upheld more overall seriousness and I'm feeling that he did really well.

I still have 1/3 of the show to go and although I know how it ends (spoil me always)... I find my heart fluttering off to like a butterfly to the garden of Shin-won.

BMR39 Feb 08 2024 11:59 am The Forbidden Marriage (금혼령) is the first sageuk (사극) drama and comedy I have ever watched. It does not pretend to be what it is not, but its 12 episodes are always very well done. The sexy dialogues are funny and the acting is great.

    The biggest surprise was Park Ju-Hyeon (박 주현). I did not know her before. She radiates a powerful energy, joy and generosity that will make you smile no matter how low you feel.  She carries the entire drama with ease and her prize as excellent actress of 2022 is richly deserved.
    If you feel low and in the blues these days, go and watch The Forbidden Marriage, Park Ju-Hyeon (박 주현) and her acting partners !  She will cheer you up ! 
  The timing of The Forbidden Marriage could not be better given the lowest birth rate in Korean history in 2023....

Park Min Jan 01 2024 5:27 pm The Forbidden Scam. A girl pretending to be the Crown Princess's ghost, a spirited leading lady, and a minor hiccup in the grand scheme of historical tales—the ban on love. It sold itself as this wild, carefree series, promising easy laughs and a blissful escape. However, the writers tripped hard trying to weave in melodramatic and political plots because the original concept was unsustainable for more than a couple of episodes. They birthed these laughable plots and pitiful antagonists in the process. The female lead, originally devious and witty, took this nosedive into becoming this sad, serious persona spouting profound but empty and hypocritical lines. It was hard to believe or feel anything she said or did after this drastic change in character. Again, forcing a systematic change across the board after a couple of episodes. At the end of the day, this is just another poor cosplay show.

And the chemistry between the FL and ML is so lit i don't want it to end the story is so refreshing and unique although there is some cliche but it will certainly make your heart flutter... I Lobe Park Ju Hyun and Kim Yeong Dae.

Kim young dae and Park ju hyun had a great chemistry. Park ju hyun's acting was really amazing. Kim young dae looked so cool as the king. It almost feels like there should have been 16 episodes but they cut the series with 4 episodes. The plot was very good regardless and I suggest giving it a watch

K Drama continues to grow showing its courage for innovation when a new fresh voice as Chun Zi-Hye can take the stage and show her stuff without apology. What to make of Forbidden Marriage? First off, follow rule #one as a viewer and suspend all your fixed beliefs and enter the world the artists have created without preconceived notions to categorize & criticise. Rule # two, allow some fresh air into our being. I think I watched an adult fairy tale with serious embedded elements presented in a fresh innovative witty hilarious sometimes naughty way. The chosen cast of actors is rock solid when it come to their acting chops…yes the entire cast. The comedic aspects of a performance they say is not for amateurs and this director, writer, actors don’t let up for a second in their quest to break new ground. The energy brought to this production keeps bubbling throughout and until the end. They all love us the viewers and keep reaching out to us in most intimate ways to include us in the jokes, absurd unbelievable characterizations and all ways creative to saying…stay with us for the ride as we create something new & fun. Are there spots where the performances or script can be tightened up? Probably. But these true professionals spend their lives always trying to improve & learn. So let’s celebrate the new gifts K Drama keeps giving us. Finally, I think we need a new definition for the usual best couples award during annual awards …in this case Park Ju Hyun, Kim Young Dae, and Kim Woo-Seok were the cutest bestest most talented “couple” we fell in love with. Thanks for putting up with, I guess, this lecture. And yes, do enjoy Forbidden Marriage.

I really think it's because it's her first screenplay and she doesn't have the experience like, for instance, the Hong Sisters have, to create a masterpiece. I knew it was going to be a pat and predictable ending and overall this series was a disappointment. The first episode was hilarious but then the writer made the mistake of making it too morose and depressing. Her characters weren't admirable except for the second male lead character. The King was a space cadet. Making his whole country unable to get married for seven long years. Dumb plot premise.

I watching drama for fun not for overused my brain to guess how’s the ending.

Unfortunately even though the actors are doing their very best, they can't save the drama as the writing is awful. I wouldn't suggest watching it but if you don't mind spending 12 hours of your time for a mediocre drama then go for it.

baby Jan 16 2023 1:04 am im a fan of koreans movie and series..i dont have any idol i just want to watch a good movie with happy ending,and the time i watch this i feel curious bcz the LM was handsome and the FL was good too funny and energitic..and anyway this love story is all about the broken heart of the ML thats why he forbid the marraige ,hope so rang can take care of the heart of the king and fight till end,for you so rang ah dont break the king s heart or he will banned the maraige forever..hahahha dont you know that the 2nd time would hurt him more than the first.and about SML that his fate hope he can meet someone who can love him dearly.

Jilli Jan 15 2023 8:13 am I looked up the writer of this story, it's a young female who also created the webtoon on which it was based. Her name is Chun Zi Hye and she has no other stories or screenplays to her credit. No wonder why the writing here has been disappointing to me, so lackluster and unrealistic. She lacks the writing chops to really do something outstanding and different with a K-drama. She's just going with a pat ending. The acting has been good, it's the writing that's been flaccid and disappointing. The first episode was so strong and cool but in truth it has disintegrated since then, making the strong female lead look weak and helpless and vulnerable. I much prefer when she looked and acted stronger and wiser.

I rarely watch this kind of romcom but i really love this drama here its really good because the comedy scene never felt strange whenever it popped up. Juhyun is a great actress shes again show her good skills to build great chemistry with every cast on her drama/movie, she fit in everykind of genre ?? her social skills is in another level!!! Im rooting for everyone and i hope we get great ending for every character?

Rainbow Jan 14 2023 3:53 am The love story between and the king and So-Rang is just too weird for me... So-Rang seems to have bigger built than the king. Park Ju-Hyun did a great job by portraying lost with no identity look character. She looks messy most of the time, and while only in palace she looks a bit tidier. When Kim Young-Dae and Kim Min-Ju walked together in the earlier episode, they looks so lovely and dreamy. Secretly, I wish they could work together next time.

Jezus lmao . But the series itself is very good. It's the same maker of me queen so i knew it was gonna be funny as hell. Overall good drama . Kim young dae ~

My least favorite episode honestly it'll take a miracle to get me to watch the rest of the drama or am I being too harsh??? I I miss the kdrama red sleeves ?it had everything I've always wanted in a historical kdrama where the king falls for the court lady he can't have

Love the actress the most, don't really care who she ends up with, just want her to be happy and safe by the end, and for that King to finally allow everyone to get married. Happy Citizens = Happy Kingdom. Seven years is ridiculously long a wait for the common folk.

I am still at episode 4. I will dread having to wait each episode to air. Its been a while since I watch a funny and good Korean drama.

This is because the story is well packaged and the extraordinary chemistry of the cast. Even though I've seen the cast in dramas before, I really like them in this drama.

Park Ju-Hyun and Kim Young-Dae with changing character expressions, and Kim Woo-Seok who completes their characters.

Very good acting, wish them more success after the good effort they showed in this drama.

Once again, thank you to the scriptwriter, director, and team on this drama for choosing the right cast for the character.

I can't wait for the next episode and other fun works ♡♡♡

Make me laugh rolled over my bed with unexpected humor. They'll good actors. The plot was also amazing and I hope a lot of viewers notice this kdrama cause it's worth watching.

Personally love the cast so there will be biases on my view on their performance but for me, so far it’s an enjoyable , light hearted drama. Literally can’t wait for the next episode!!

I personally love this and looking forward to next episodes.

anna Dec 15 2022 12:20 pm i dont know … park ju hyun is amazing but kim young dae on the other hand … he doesn’t have that aura for saeguk dramas. He has the face of someone who knows what an Iphone is. I think he’s better off with other roles that arent in historical dramas.

His only redeeming quality is that he looks like Kang Dong Won …

Inmo Dec 15 2022 10:59 am Don't be discouraged by the negative comments. Of course, everyone has different taste but anyone interested in this should also enjoy rom-com, right? Tbh I didn't expect much but this drama surprised me. First episode was made brilliantly with full of captivating elements. The total contrast of the beginning and ending is fascjnating. First scene seems ridiculous and funny that it gives you the vibe this barely has serious plot but the ending was magical and heartwrenching. Male lead is very suited with his role as a depressed young king. But the female lead portrayal is a bit unrealistic - she looks too pretty & well kept for a vagrant, even with the ragged clothes. It makes her whole appearance looks weird. But that's all, no complaints about her acting skills (loved her in Love All Play & A Piece of Your Mind). TLDR; Nice cinematography, good directing & fairly intriguing story. Hope the following episodes has the same quality.

I not kyd fan, and i even dont recognize the female lead, but no worries this drama already fun to me, i will know the three leads and watch till the end. I hope its happy ending ya!

And yes in every historical drama there's really one evil court minister that will go around the plot and funny that minister Jo Sung-Gyun is a funny character in Cheer-Up but here he is an evil minister (his facial expression is kinda off for an antagonist- I find his facial expression funny tho I cannot feel an evil vibes from him).

I love the chemistry between the King and So-rang but...... I'm rooting for Shin-won if he won't be able to end up with FL well it's okay because I'm here lol

Anyways, Looking forward for the succeeding episodes
