Kagekatsu and Kanetsugu attend Hideyoshi's tea ceremony where Hideyoshi publicly tries to make Kanetsugu his retainer by offering a pile of gold dust. Kanetsugu flatly refuses the offer saying Kagekatsu was his one and only master. Kanetsugu asks Mitsunari to protect Hatsune and Uesugi troops return to Echigo. In September 1586, Kagekatsu, who is assigned by Hideyoshi to guard the eastern region, is ordered to persuade Date Masamune, who rules the northeastern part of the country, to visit Hideyoshi in Kyoto.&lt;br /&gt;

In 1587, Yoshichi, who is renamed Saneyori, pays a courtesy visit to Hideyoshi in Kyoto on behalf of Kagekatsu. Advised by Hideyoshi's wife, he changes his surname and unexpectedly receives a title which upsets Kanetsugu. The following year, Kagekatsu and Kanetsugu unwillingly leave for Kyoto with Saneyori to meet Hideyoshi, who offer them titles. The two reject the titles at first which makes Saneyori respect Kanetsugu. To seek higher self, Saneyori asks Kanetsugu to station him in Kyoto which later determines his role as a liaison between Uesugi and Toyotomi. Kanetsugu learns Osen's pregnancy when he arrives home.&lt;br /&gt;

Osen, who is expecting soon, retreats to Yoita while Kanetsugu is on duty at Kasuga Castle. Hideyoshi orders Uesugi to attack Date Masamune who is expanding its territory. Instead Kanetsugu sees Masamune to persuade him to cease war. Kanetsugu criticizes Masamune which upsets the warlord who takes out his sword at Kanetsugu but is stopped by his wife. Osen gives birth to a baby girl. Meanwhile, Hojo army advances into Sanada's territory and Hideyoshi decides to enter war with Hojo.&lt;br /&gt;

Kiku and Osen, who came to see Hideyoshi in Kyoto, are busy making courtesy visits to Hideyoshi's wife, Yodo who is his concubine and wives of influential feudal lords. Meanwhile, Hideyoshi's three-year-old son, Tsurumaru, dies of illness. Hideyoshi names his nephew, Hidetsugu, as his successor and prepares for invading Korea. In March 1592, Uesugi troops arrive in Kyoto to join Hideyoshi's troops. Kanetsugu asks Mitsunari to give up invading Korea, which Mitsunari turns down. A year later, Uesugi finally moves its troops to Korea under Hideyoshi's command.&lt;br /&gt;

Kagekatsu and Kanetsugu experience fierce battle in Korea, however, they are soon called back by Hideyoshi who lost interest in conquering Korea after Yodo gave birth to a boy, Hiroi. At a meeting, Kagekatsu and Kanetsugu meet Hideyoshi's adopted son, Hidetoshi, who is later put up for adoption to Kobayakawa by Hideyoshi who no longer needed an adopted heir. Hideyoshi orders a castle to be built for Hiroi, and in 1594, Kagekatsu and Kanetsugu are assigned for the project. Hidetsugu is placed under treason charges. Osen gives birth to a boy.&lt;br /&gt;

In 1595, Kanetsugu is delighted to be promoted Uesugi's chief advisor. Hidetsugu is forced to commit suicide for treason charge against Hideyoshi who wants to make his biological son his successor. Masamune, who was close to Hidetsugu, is also suspected of treason, however, is saved by Ieyasu. Hidetsugu's entire family is executed and Hideyoshi orders feudal lords to pledge their loyalty to Hiroi. Concerned over Hideyoshi's tyranny, Kanetsugu proposes establishing an advisory board to Hideyoshi, which won his approval with Toshiie's advice.&lt;br /&gt;

In September 1597, Mitsunari secretly summons Kanetsugu to see Hideyoshi who was ill. Fearing Ieyasu's growing power, Hideyoshi asks Kanetsugu to move Uesugi's territory to Aizu to prevent Ieyasu from betraying. Kanetsugu also tells Kagekatsu to place utmost priority on securing peace which makes him decide to leave Echigo. The following year, Hideyoshi officially orders Uesugi to move to Aizu and Uesugi becomes the third most powerful feudal lord following Tokugawa and Mori. Uesugi is offered Masamune's territory, Yonezawa which upsets him. Before leaving Echigo, Kagekatsu and Kanetsugu climb Mt. Hakkai to take a last look at their homeland.&lt;br /&gt;

In March 1598, Kagekatsu and Kanetsugu visit Kyoto to see Hideyoshi ill in bed. After Hideyoshi's death, Ieyasu criticizes Mitsunari's leadership at a meeting of feudal lords which raises tension. Ieyasu also dodges Yodo's order to pledge his loyalty to Hideyori, then named Hiroi. Kanetsugu learns from Hatsune that Mitsunari planned to kill Ieyasu, and he convinces Mitsunari to ignore Ieyasu's provocation and give up the plan. Meanwhile, Masamune leads his troops to side with Ieyasu who maneuvers to bring Toyotomi down. Kanetsugu seeks help from Toshiie who makes Ieyasu pledge his loyalty to Toyotomi, however, Toshiie's death raises Kanetsugu's concerns.&lt;br /&gt;

===Episode 36===&lt;br /&gt;
On the night of Toshiie's death, Hideyoshi's retainers led by Fukushima try to assassinate Mitsunari who sought refugee in Ieyasu's place. Although Ieyasu saves his life, he is put under detention. Ieyasu moves into Fushimi Castle as Hideyori's guardian and to become the de facto ruler. At a feudal lords' meeting, Mori criticizes Ieyasu's tyranny, however, he turns the blame onto Mitsunari and Kanetsugu which raises tension at the meeting. Kagekatsu, who is asked to leave Kyoto by Ieyasu, decides to return to Aizu sensing Ieyasu's planned attack on Uesugi. Before leaving Kyoto, Kanetsugu sees Mitsunari to plan bringing Ieyasu down to which Mitsunari vows to prove justice. The two map out a plan against Ieyasu and exchange their thoughts toward peace. After reassuring their friendship, they vow for reunion and Kanetsugu leaves Kyoto.&lt;br /&gt;

Kanetsugu, who was on duty in Aizu, receives a letter from Ieyasu, who had doubts over Uesugi's royalty. The letter requested Kagekatsu and Kanetsugu to see Ieyasu in Kyoto to explain the situation. To prove Uesugi's innocence, Kanetsugu wrote back to Ieyasu expressing Uesugi's determination against Ieyasu's unreasonable tyranny which upsets Ieyasu. Kanetsugu prepares for war against Ieyasu who moves his troops to attack Uesugi. Meanwhile, Mitsunari names Mori as the chief commander of anti-Ieyasu troop and moves into Osaka Castle to prepare for the war with Ieyasu under Hideyori's command. Learning Mitsunari's move, Ieyasu returns to Osaka to meet Mitsunari's attack.&lt;br /&gt;

In September 1600, troops led by Ieyasu headed for Osaka to meet Mitsunari's forces in Sekigahara. Meanwhile, Uesugi army led by Kanetsugu prepares to fight Mogami, the ruler of Uesugi's neighboring territory in northern Japan, who was Ieyasu's ally. On September 15, the two forces met in Sekigahara and Uesugi launches its attack on Mogami. Mitsunari, who had doubts over Hideaki for taking no move, tries to convince him to ally with Mitsunari, however, Hideaki was by then already approached by Ieyasu to take his side.&lt;br /&gt;

Kanetsugu retreats to Aizu where he learns from Hatsune of Mitsunari's death. Meanwhile, Ieyasu starts penalizing warlords who had sided with Mitsunari and puts Toyotomi under his control. The following year, Kanetsugu and Saneyori see Ieyasu in Osaka. There Kanetsugu sees Fukushima who speaks of Mitsunari's immense concerns over the future of the Toyotomi clan. Upon Fukushima's request, Kanetsugu sees Hideaki who conveys Mitsunari's hope for Kanetsugu to hand down his belief in justice to future generations.&lt;br /&gt;

Kagekatsu and Kanetsugu head for Osaka under Ieyasu's order. Kanetsugu, who seeks for ways to save Uesugi after its loss, sees Ieyasu's aide, Honda Masanobu, to propose adopting his second son to marry Kanetsugu's daughter. The deal would make Masanobu's son Kanetsugu's successor. Meanwhile, Hideaki, who is asked by Fukushima to help Uesugi, seeks Yodo's help who convinces Ieyasu to save Uesugi. Ieyasu, however, forfeits Uesugi's territory and orders Uesugi to move to Yonezawa.&lt;br /&gt;

Uesugi's people are upset over the forced relocation. Under Souemon's advice, Kanetsugu, who hopes to keep Uesugi retainers' spirits high, recruits workers for cultivating wasteland. The marriage between Kanetsugu's daughter, Matsu, and Honda Masashige is officially arranged, which upsets Takematsu, Kanetsugu's son, who had believed in succeeding his father. Souemon comforts Takematsu by telling him Kanetsugu's separation from his family at age 5. Learning Kanetsugu's unconditional love, Takematsu comes to accept his fate.&lt;br /&gt;

Takematsu falls ill which sends Sen to Yonezawa. Ieyasu, who is granted the title of Shogun, sets his government in Edo and summons Kagekatsu and Kanetsugu to see him in Edo. Despite Saneyori's protest, Kanetsugu decides to see Ieyasu to place priority on Uesugi's future. Meanwhile, Kiku falls ill and tells Kagekatsu to take a concubine who could bear an heir for the Uesugi clan instead of her.&lt;br /&gt;

To prepare for Matsu and Masashige's wedding, Kanetsugu sends his envoys to pick up Masashige. However, Saneyori, who was against Kanetsugu's plan to join hands with Ieyasu through the marriage, takes out his sword at an envoy. Learning Saneyori's mindless attack, Kanetsugu sees Masanobu to ask for pardon. Moved by Kanetsugu's faithful attitude, Masanobu approves the marriage. Kanetsugu tells Saneyori their faith and devotion to Uesugi was the same, and makes a painful decision to dismiss his brother from Uesugi's territory which became the permanent separation of the two.&lt;br /&gt;

Masashige joins Naoe clan and is renamed Katsuyoshi, however, he closes his heart to the family which depresses Matsu. Ieyasu passes his Shogun title onto his son, Hidetada, to manifest Tokugawa was no longer subjected to Toyotomi. In late year, Kanetsugu's second daughter, Ume, dies of plague. Matsu also falls ill and passes away, leaving her word that she was happy to have married Katsuyoshi.&lt;br /&gt;

In 1605, Hidetada is officially appointed Shogun. Ieyasu summons feudal lords including Uesugi to Edo for the celebration, however, Toyotomi members fail to show up. Concerned over Toyotomi's future, Hideyoshi's first wife, Kodaiin, urges Yodo to accept her fate. Kanetsugu returns to Yonezawa and tells Katsuyoshi to take in a second wife while caring for Takematsu's feelings. Sentoin falls ill.&lt;br /&gt;

Masamune makes an unexpected visit to convey Hidetada's order to persuade Ieyasu not to attack Osaka Castle. Despite Hidetada's worries over his daughter, who is married to Hideyori, Ieyasu orders feudal lords to move their troops to Osaka. Meanwhile, Yukimura arrives at Osaka Castle to assist Toyotomi forces. In November 1614, Tokugawa and Toyotomi enter into war.&lt;br /&gt;

After Toyotomi's defeat, Kagekatsu and Kanetsugu return to Yonezawa where Kageaki, formerly named Takematsu, falls ill. Despite Kanetsugu and Sen's attentive care, he passes away. Sen is struck with deep grief and leaves for Edo. Ieyasu, who sensed his life was approaching to an end, asks Kanetsugu to assist Hidetada in becoming a respectable Shogun. After Ieyasu's death, Kanetsugu arrives in Edo Castle as Hidetada's advisor. Kanetsugu later retires and visits homeland Echigo with Sen.&lt;br /&gt;
