Plot Synopsis by AsianWiki Staff ©
"Lights and Shadows" depicts the life of Kang Ki-Tae (Ahn Jae-Wook) - described as Korea's first entertainer. Kang Ki-Tae debuted at an American military base stage and worked in the show business during the 1960s. Storyline covers periods from the 1960s to the present day. Various historical incidents like the Vietnam War, May 16 military coup d'etat and the assassination of Korean President Park Chung-hee ......

Ki-Tae (Ahn Jae-Wook) is the son of the richest man in Soonyang. Ki-Tae works at a cinema, which is one of several businesses owned by his father, but Ki-Tae is more interested in having fun than work. Ki-Tae is just a troublemaker to his father. One day his father checks his account book and finds that some numbers are missing. Ki-Tae explains that he invested 10,000,000 won on making a movie to show in the cinema on Korean Thanksgiving Day. His father stipulates that this is the last chance for Ki-Tae.

Meanwhile, politician Jang Chul-Hwan (Jeon Kwang-Leol) runs in the general election in Soonyang. Ki-Tae's father is reluctant to meet him, but his father goes to politician Jang Chul-Hwan office with his secretary Jo Myung-Kook (Lee Jong-Won). During the meeting, Chul-Hwan asks for a "donation," but Ki-Tae's father refuses. As soon as Ki-Tae's father leaves, politician Chul-Hwan grabs secretary Jo Myung-Kook's hand and asks him to work with him.

Ki-Tae and his assistant goes to Seoul to check on the movie Ki-Tae invested in, but their main purpose is to play around in Seoul. On the first night in Seoul, Ki-Tae goes to a dance club to check out the college girls in the area. There, Ki-Tae bumps into his younger sister Myung-Hee. They agree not to tell their parents that they met in the club.

The next day, Ki-Tae and his assistant goes the the production office and soon discover that Ki-Tae was swindled by Yang Tae-Sung. The movie he invested in doesn't exist. Ki-Tae and his assistant can't even find Yang Tae-Sung so they go back to Soonyang.

Ki-Tae's dilemma gets worse as he discovers all the movies are sold out for the holiday. Then, Soo-Hyuk (Lee Pil-Mo) is discharged from the army and comes to Soonyang. Soo-Hyuk's mother has worked at Ki-Tae's house for a long time as a maid. Soo-Hyuk is also smart enough to have graduated from a prestigious university, but, nevertheless, he has an inferiority complex due ot his poor background. Soo-Hyuk is then offered a job by politician Jang Chul-Hwan. Soo-Hyuk first met Jang Chul-Hwan for the first time after he was accepted into the best university and Jang Chul-Hwan presented to Soo-Hyuk his scholarship. Since than they kept in touch.

While Soo-Hyuk greets everyone, Ki-Tae appears at the house. This is only for a short time. Ki-Tae is soon kicked out of his house by his father after his father learns that Ki-Tae was swindled. Ki-Tae's father tells him not to come back home until everything is solved. Ki-Tae and his assistant goes back to Seoul and to the shooting set. The director was introduced by Yang Tae-Sung. When Ki-Tae and his assistant bursts onto the set, rookie actress Jung-Hye (Nam Sang-Mi) is performing on a stage. Ki-Tae and his assistant interrupts the shoot and demands to know the whereabouts of Yang Tae-Sung. Suddenly the directors calls Jung-Hye and asks her about Yang Tae-Sung. Jung-Hye insists that she does not know. When Ki-Tae calls her a swindler, Jung-Hye slaps Ki-Tae and walks away. Ki-Tae and his assistant tails her until she finally meets Yang Tae-Sung. He's gambling at a private area. Ki-Tae and his assistant bursts into the place and catches Yang Tae-Sung. A man introduces himself as Shin Jung-Goo, the director of the "Bitnari Show" and explains that Yang Tae-Sung doesn't have any money left. Yang Tae-Sung suggests to Ki-Tae to put on a live performance instead of movie during Thanksgiving Day. He also recommends the "Bitnari Show."

Ki-Tae goes to a coffee shop to see Shin Jung-Goo's show. There, Ki-Tae watches Jung-Hye singing and dancing ....
