In 1978, he turned to directing features, such as THE SWORD, LOVE MASSACRE, NOMAD, CHERIE, FINAL VICTORY, BURNING SHOW, and MY HEART IS THAT ETERNAL ROSE which earned him the reputation of "The Father of 'La Nouvelle Vague'" in Hong Kong Cinema. He has also worked as a film editor, winning awards for Best Editing on Wong Kar-wai's DAYS OF BEING WILD and ASHES OF TIME.
