Plot

Lee Soo-Jung (Ha Ji-Won) is a travel agent who is seeking her good luck in Bali after a harsh and unforgiving childhood. She meets Jae-Min (Zo In-Sung ), Kang In-Wook (So Ji-Seob ), and Young-Joo (Park Ye-Jin) in Bali, three seemingly perfect people entangled in a triangle of love. When Lee Soo-jung finds herself back in Seoul, her desire for success leads her to seek Jae-Min for a job, unwittingly setting off a course of events that further complicate the love triangle.

Park Min Mar 30 2023 7:46 pm I feel sorry for Ha Ji Won to be involved in this fuming hot garbage. As always, Zo In Sung playing a mentally deranged character. What needed to be said have been already said by everyone, there isn't much to add. If you want to watch it for whatever reason, I highly suggest you read any spoiler before watching it. This is the type of show you need to know the spoilers before watching.

The ending: Jae Min become possessed by an old midget goblin demon soul and goes to buy a gun like an emo kid who wants to take revenge on the world. Then enters the room inconspicuously and empty the gun magazine into both Soo Jung and In Wook while laughing and giggling. Both were laying on the bed drenched in their blood. Then he smirks and says "we live in a society". Then goes to the beach at dawn to watch the final sunset while playing "Ohio Is for Lovers" by Hawthorne Heights on his Walkman. Then he shouts "the world is so cruel!!" and shoots himself in the head. Big sadge!

The last 4 minutes I don't understand, how the author can think of an ending like this. as soojung jaemin shipper, soojung confesses her true feelings for jae min to kang in wook, heoll what happens next...! I think at first soojung's feelings were really for Kang In Wook because I had read spoilers saying that Soojung would end up with In Wook. Ah so I finally know why Memories of Bali is a sad drama And one more thing, youngjoo I can't hate him. I think he's actually not bad, youngjoo is just showing his disappointment, the person he loves and the person he is going to marry loves another woman who is the same how he can be nice.

Sky Jan 28 2021 2:50 am This is one of the best drama I have eat hed which actually made me somehow accustomed to the likelihood of tragic endings. Jung Jae min and lee soo jung are both exceptionally great actors to take into such an intricate cup pf tea...rather than melodrama and somehow unrealistic ending. The actor is versatile, he is sonewhat awkward in acting but actually somehow its what that makes ua like about him.I can't stop praising the drama as its so much real...Gramsci really exist and it has portrayed all the pain that the characters goes thru. But I don't like kang in wook andyoung joo because of their stubborness but the actors hav played very well.love for hi mee as she too is struggling to get out of the slum.

Now 15 years later, I re watch again this drama, and shocking for the cast there were So ji sub, Jo In sung and Ha ji Won. They all may favorite. Back then I don't even know who they are. Currently many drama airing, yet I still spend my time to re watch this. This drama totally good despite the tragic ending.

m Jun 22 2020 6:12 am you know,some times you see 19 episode for 19 hour and then you see twentieth episode but right after finishing the twentieth episode you realize that you threw your time in trash bin I have no problem with a sad ending, but I do have a problem with horrible endings that have no logic behind them. I think the writers did not have any idea how to finish the story so they decided to ruined whole the series with a completely laughable and foolish ending that have many plot hole ex=Jae-Min did not hear the conversation between Soo-Jung and In-Wook and Ridiculous scene like Soo-Jung in the bed with In-Wook after sex with him in the last breath said to Jae-Min that she love him((really??)) then call it a tragedy and shocking ending.

Kimmy Sep 30 2019 3:55 pm I started this drama because So Ji Sub and Jo In Sung. In the end i loved it solely because of Jo In Sung.. So Ji Sub's character was just too boring for me and not expressive enough.. while Jo In Sung portrayed his character so well it made me love him more. This drama was not a beautiful love story at all. It was not sweet or cute or anything. Its in a way what can be called bad, ugly and flawed love. What makes it worth it for me is Jung jae Min. Lee Soo Young was just an unhappy character..she was unhappy when she was with both man in my opinion. but then she truly loved Jung Jae Min and i think liked that with Kang In Wook it was easy and uncomplicated and he was nice and handsome.. yet still she couldnt be happy with him. I didnt find this drama boring at all though. Jang Jae Min kept me entertained and im completly in love with Jo In Sung. So Ji Sub's character however just didnt do it for me. He was like a robot. This drama is not for everyone though...its dark

I must say, I have never appreciated melodramas because of its emotional plot... but not this one! this is my most favorite melodrama. It's a shame that I only watched it now despite the fact that I call myself a "Kdrama Addict"... This is a must watch series!! It hurts so much...(aigoooo my heart)... Jae Min gave up everything but sadly, So Jung didn't know and she followed In Wook (it hurts so much).... but I like that the drama ended that way... because I love "So Jung-Jae Min" and "So Jung-In Wook"... I don't want So Jung to let go of In Wook. I want So-Jung for Jae Min too... For those who haven't watched it, I'm telling you, you're missing half of your fan-girling life

I could not found such level of stress (that I got when it's end) from other dramas as far. but then you can't stop once you start..that's how amazing it is. the actors are all great in portraying their characters. anyway it introduces me of ha ji won so thanks for giving birth to such a talented actress!

So Ji Sub, Jo In Sung and Ha Ji Won totally blend with their characters. I wish I have known them when they filmed in Bali, I could just go there just to have their signature or what. Until now, they still incredible, even more and more. I still wish I could met them in person. They're not just gorgeous but living legends for me.

You must be in a good mood to bear with all the angst and rage of the characters or else you will be like me and yell at your screen (LOL). I’m not sure I would recommend this for any other reason than the acting is really good.

I know it's probably really good, but I can't deal with the pitiful heroine and the abuse from the other female characters along with that back and forth between the guys, and then the end...WHAT? It shows how choices impact results. The candidate one chooses to marry might not be the one one love most. It depends on timing and the situations at the time when the decisions are made. This dramas traces the struggles the OTPs went thru bfore coming up with their final decicions tt brought a tragic end.

Dont expect a cinderella style story with scenes where the main casts show lovey dovey glances at every turn. To many the love lines are without sparks if they are without the outward display of affection and fluff. They want a fantasy where love lasts forever. Unfortunately real life tho hve sweet endings but there are plenty of tragic endings too. So how Bali ended does not make it an unbelievable story.

Fan Nov 24 2017 9:14 am I'm a fan of Ha Ji Won & I watched almost all of her dramas, movies she has done. but I ignored this one coz I thought this is a kind of love triangle we can often watch in dramas. However, finally I just gave it a try and I regretted not watching it sooner. Actually this drama talks about what can or could happen in the real life, but no one can see whole picture at once. Love, loss, hatred, jealousy, misunderstandings and how these things push people lives to a place where no one can revise. The ending is so sad, thumbs up for the main casts including My favorites HJW & JIS. I watched this in the end of 2017 and still it has the power to watch the whole drama continuously without getting any break. And the story gives a wonderful advise because there may be some people who are experiencing the same kind of situations just like the four main charactor's stories in the present world too. So this drama gives a wider idea how people's arrogant behavior, jealousy, misunderstanding, competition, poorness etc affect to destroy people's peaceful lives and finally push to an irreversible ending.

There was no emotions and no sparks between the leads. From start to end you couldn't tell who she will end with. And the end? I guess it is how you interpret it. Because If you watched lover in Paris you will understand me. I will choose to believe the ending is like lover in Paris.

Soo Jung & Jae-min are couple made in heaven.. so confused & messed up! I dont mind unhappy ending but please... looks like the scriptwriters have no idea for the ending.

uhall1 May 18 2016 6:45 am I am not sure how I feel about this drama....I watched the first 7 episodes and skipped to the end.....the story line was too depressing....I can understand that life is not always smooth...but there was no moment of each of the casts being in a happy mood....why...????? I saw Lee Soo Jung smiled only when she was working as a tour guide...in the first 2 episodes....and the other main casts were just so dull.....Could not they have a happy moment just once in 20 episodes....?? Ah....I remembered the only cast who could smile and laugh (sarcastically) was Jung Jae Min's brother...

I don't mind a tragic ending....but the whole story was too depressing for me....as I said no happy moment, no cute moment, no funny moment....Jung Jae Min and Choi Young Joo always pulled their face.....Kang In Wook always had straight no expression face....it was undeniable this drama was supported by great actors...

Erepyon Mar 14 2016 2:58 am I don't understand with so many rage about the ending. So drama/movie can only have good ending? What's wrong with tragic ending? I really like this drama and especially because of the ending. One of the comment said about how all the characters had flaws, obsessive, greedy, selfish, psychotic, etc. But that's what I like about this drama. I mean, isn't this just like life? Not all people in this life are just as simple as black and white, good and bad. Sometimes tehy are complex. The portrayal of a protagonist that always act kind, smiling, and be good all the time, or a guy that seems cold on the outside but actually a good person, or the antagonist that's just plain bad people, that's like a common formula, and it's so boring.

And I just can never understand with people said they hate a movie/drama, because the ending is too sad or its story is depressing. I mean not all story should be all rainbow and butterfly. I mean, I have many favourite Korean dramas that ends with happy ending, but that doesn't mean it always has to be like that, And as for the comment about how the characters are really aggravating, annoying, makes you angry, etc. Well, if you feel that way, then that means you just praise their acting.

You are absolutely right, this drama has an amazing cast, imagine Ha Ji Won, So Ji Sub and Zo in Sung together? What a blast! But I don't think this is a bad drama after all. By looking at your comment, I conclude that you just watched this recently. Tragic ending is the "TREND" back in early 2000 just like Endless love trilogy, 1 litre tears etc.. May I suggest recent rom-coms by these wonderful artists. =) I really love them!

No wonder So Ji Sub and Zo In Sung have the same level of oozing sexiness, hotness, appeal, charisma and beautiful face, It's because they've been in the business for so long now. As I was researching about them, I found out that the drama they aired in free tv every afternoon was them. I was surprised a bit.

It must have been up for an award because I remember thinking for foreign films, "oh yes, what did happen in Bali?" I remember seeing a snip-it of it. For the foreign films, the language gets it. Bravo!!! Ha Ji-Won & Zo- In-Sung... Superb Acting... Soo-Jung was inlove really with Jae-Min from the very start but she could not admit it to herself (It wasn't really the material things that made her fall for Jae-Min but it was the self centered, arrogant, complicated, childish act of him --- She saw and felt the complicated warm love of Jae-Min for her --- Jae-Min never gives up on her --- He keeps on chasing her until the end...Jae-Min was so TRUE to her unlike In-Wook...I would never fall for someone who is too cold and will just ignore you depending on his mood... I SO LOVE YOU ZO-IN-SUNG mwahugz...2 thumbs up...

It makes me watch episodes back to back to see the strong love triangle,angst & sensation which this drama is famous for! Even the poster of this drama made me curious & it gives me the impression that this drama makes you have lots of FEELINGS!! :))

I am into "Jae-Min" character! He is so charismatic.Whereas,I DISLIKE "In-Wook" because so far he is so quiet,reserved & depressed looking!! TO ME,Jae-Min who is possessive,childish & obsessive is A LOT MORE likable & charismatic than the latter man!

I know that this drama has tragic ending & I AM SO CURIOUS to know what happens in the end!! I am into "sad ending" stories!!

herbmom Mar 23 2014 8:59 pm Not my favorite drama. The three principles were fabulous, but the story was too full of angst. Jae-Min was obsessive, possessive, selfish and a baby. Young-Joo was just selfish and greedy. Soo-Jung was driven by pride and greed, but made terrible choices. She was never happy except when she was with In-Wook, yet gave her heart to Jae-Min. Everyone just overreacted to everything, driven mostly by psychotic, neurotic Jae-Min. The only one who really loved was In-Wook. The ending was kind of stupid, although it definitely put an end to all the craziness. It just seemed to me that the story and situations never really justified the overwrought emotions and crazy actions. Truly though, the acting was great, especially Jo In-Sung as the greedy, ridiculous man-child.

I have finished watching his latest drama,"The Heirs",which has become wildly & internationally popular. It is a POP CULTURE PHENOMENON!! I really am into the lines & dialogues of the drama "The Heirs" so I checked the profile of "Word Magician" Kim Eun Sook & decided 2 watch her dramas like "Lovers in Paris"! I'm watching it these days,I like it!:) I have become interested in dramas in 2000,2004,.. Apart from "Lovers in Paris",I wish 2 add "Something happened in Bali","Autumn in my heart","Lovers in Prague". What other dramas like those above do you find worth being watched?? Is "Something happened in Bali" highly recommended?? Does "Something happened in Bali" have a REFRESHING plot?? How is the acting of "Ha Ji Won"?? Is her character engaging??

Pearl Sep 03 2013 9:52 am Oh my gawd. Oh my gawd!!! I just watched the last episode of this drama and I can't believe I wasted the last 5 days of my precious life on this drivel. The ending was cheesy and contrived and while the series itself wasn't even that great, I kept watching in the hope that it would get better. I swear, I'm never watching another Korean drama ever again. Rating for the series without the ludicrous half-baked ending: 3.5/10. Rating for the series with the laughable dopey ending: 1/10. Arrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh >:-(

estelle Sep 02 2013 9:41 am First half of the drama was good then all of sudden the writing spiked sharply downwards w/ nonsense and unbelievable scenes. Ha Ji Won's portrayal of her character annoyed the bejesus out of me and I was tempted to quit 1/3 of the way in the drama. I persevered, only to be bored mindless with all of the exaggerated twists and forced turns in the last quarter of the drama. Not the best drama ever.

angskeet Mar 22 2013 3:45 am This drama is WHACK!!! I would not recommend it to anyone. The main character in this drama NEEDS to see a psychiatrist! He has a serious problem, "obsession and mental help." The heroine also needs some counseling as well, she was so annoying. The character did not make me feel sorry for her at all. Yeah, she was an orphan and is poor, but she could of lived her life a different way instead of chasing after a rich man. She deserved all the s*** that was thrown upon her. Getting beat up, and being called trash. I have NEVER watched a drama that was as dumb as this one!!!

Highly recommend My Lovely Samsoon, Nice Guy, City Hunter, Full House, King 2 Hearts, Green Rose, Shining Inheritance, and Wonderful Life.

valentina Oct 18 2010 3:18 am It was very hard to me to continue watching this drama until the end, because i hated so much Ha Ji Won's character. I think Jo In Sung's acting was the best point of this series. Great, great acting. I am waiting his return with a new drama or movie. From what I know he is still in the army. One more thing : Jo In Sung was so funny with that satchel on his back-when he was going to work :)

Wonbin Nov 18 2009 8:10 am So far,this is still the best korean drama.Maybe a best drama in the world! The ending are so tragic!! When i watch it in TV,every whole day i only thinking about this drama.I recomend to all who not watch yet.Once you watch it,you'll stuck on it.
