Drama series follows the conflict between King Yeongjo (Han Suk-Kyu) and Crown Prince Sado (Lee Je-Hoon). King Yeongjo pursues strong royal authority, while Crown Prince Sado insists on equality for all.

As their acting are great, they still can't save this boring plot. It's a waste of good actors

So far, this is the most boring sageuk drama ever for being too serious and overdramatic.

the script is too rigid and too focused on naive Prince and overdramatic King.

this drama is made for Han Suk Kyu and Lee Jee Hoon's fans, that's all

Trish Jan 11 2022 12:54 am I went into this full well knowing the history (bearing in mind that only the victors can write the history) but I was still not prepared for the heart-breaking final 2 episodes. It was very interesting to see these events from a different point of view. Fantastic Storytelling and Fantastic Actors. This is what Drama is all about, I loved every second. Pennyroyal Dec 31 2021 9:08 am @nobi the historians' "doubts" you're talking about are Not about him being a serial rapist and murderer, he Was one...it's so ugly that they turned hyegyeong (like what they've done to all women in historical dramas and movies since god knows when lol) into an annoying icy cold b!tch in here who hates her husband while in her book, she mentions litterally all throughout the whole thing how much she respected him and how guilty she feels for living while he's dead...she didn't villainize his husband in her memoirs, she just writes about what she saw in a more emotional way than historical records and talks about the fact that she faught all the odds to write that (since it was impossible for women to do that in her time) because people kept spreading wrong rumors that were just looking for the "bad guy" in this messy situation why it was WAY more complicated than "whose fault it is?" The "claims" of his wife aren't as unimportant and irrelevant as you're talking about them, historians are men and history is written by victorers while hyegyeong writes about the Emotions and looks at the relationship between the characters in a psychological way (something that has Never happened in actual historical records written by historians), that sht is way more credible and makes the whole thing make more sense than official historical records...at least read the god damn book before writing terrible and totally inaccurate takes here lmao...overall, hyegyeong is absolutely NOT what this show wants her to be (she did Not hate her husband, she even writes about his sad committing violent crimes not because of being evil by nature, but being "ill"), and this whole thing is not as white_black as this show wants it to be neither...reading hyegyeong' memories and looking at the whole story in the lens of a Woman who tries her best to be unbiased gives you a better insight than this show and 70% of media produced based on this event

I have watched so many historical dramas but this was my first time watching a fully historical political thriller.This drama has very interesting story for a certain extent. However I belive it would have been more interesting if some unnecessary subplots would have cut-offed from the main plot of the story as the story is too long. But the plot has a good coherrence than some dramas. Apart from the plot story the acting was really praisable. Specially Le je - hoon acting is really worthing.All the other stars specially the actor who potrays the character of king act well. The young artist kim yoo jung too act well. But the adult seo ji-dam 's character should have been exposed more than this because her character was initially influenced to the story. So, yoon so hee who act as seo ji dam may have act well as she is talented actress. I have seen her acting in some dramas like ruler master of mask and marriage not dating. Anyhow all the actors have done justice to their roles. So if you can spare some time on watching a long historical political thriller with less romance but suspence and curiostity just watch this!!!

There has been no historical record (they kept records of every royal family back then) besides his wife's claims that he was mentally unstable and even that had only said he had a phobia regarding clothes and thunder and severe anxiety when it comes to facing his father, the king who was very strict and unsatisfied with everything about Sado (his wife wrote about it as well). So your truth might not be the truth after all because even the historians have a huge debate on this matter. Many historians believe Sado was wrongfully accused of being a serial rapist and killer because of the rumors spread by the politicians who had different views and beliefs especially those who are adamant to abolish the social hierarchy that Sado longed for. This drama shows what could have been the truth but lays no claim that this is the true story of Sado because nothing has been confirmed or proven of the so-called crimes. If you believe that Sado is indeed a serial killer/rapist then you can watch Yoo Ah-In's portrayal of Crown Prince Sado which is close to what you believe in.

christina May 07 2019 1:53 am This is by far the saddest story I had watched in Korean dramas. The truth had long been buried with the dead, so what is left with us is assumption to be used to bring about the possibility of an unjustifiable death, which I am more prone to believe due to things done by King Jeongjo, in memory of his father.

Sado killed and raped so many people that his father ultimately sent him into a wooden rice chest where he died eight days later. In this drama, it makes it look like he was this great Crown Prince, but that is not accurate at all. He most likely had a mental illness, and he should have been with his parents growing up. He was raised with the staff at the palace. I will never agree with the way he was punished. He should of had him exiled. Can't change what happened. Why write something that is so off from the truth though?

However, both Kim You-Jung and Park Eun-Bin did well. And the supporting cast was competent.

But the script often bogged down and became tedious. As a historical drama, this one was mediocre at best.

So i feel a bit excited to watch another perspective about King Yeongjo and CP Sado in this drama.

Guiltypleasure Apr 03 2017 3:23 am While waiting impatiently like a crazy for 5th episode of " the liar and his lover" and "rebel", I got lost watched The throne movie. YAI made me cry loudly. That sexy man really potrays anyone perfectly. He made me curious more and "en-wild" my magination about prince sado. (Whether he has his lover who love him, he looks so lonely, whether his problem with his father not only because of different princinple or there is problem about woman?? ) Arrggg, all unrational question stay at my head and make me cannot concentrate doing anything. Seriously. So I come into this drama. I am gonna start watching it and I hope it reach my expectation.

I wish they would/could change. I am watching this now. But will not be watching the merchant drama just because of this. Any case I don't like the lead actor from the merchant drama. This guy Je-Hoon, have liked him from Goong :)

celcriss Aug 26 2015 7:27 pm Oh my gosh,what a nice drama.Plot,twist,suspense and conspiracy is all in this drama.kudos to the crown prince who after everything didn't falter in his will to create an equal society in joseon,the king was a pitiful man who was always in a dilemma.one thing about this is that it is unpredictable,affections and a lot of stong-will.The characters did their part very well.Hope to watch more of the type of drama.Perfect ending,Rating:10/10

jan Jul 23 2015 10:19 am great story of crown prince sado that the producers have come up with. he's a great lost to the korean history if this story of him is true. i guess, it's true that he's a good man and father. otherwise, his son,king jeonjo, who was a good king himself won't be too proud to say " iam the son of crown prince sado." amazing royal father and son relation. actors did a real great job specially lee je han and han suk kyu. two thumbs up !! hope to see them both again in dramas. soon. "secret door" for me is prince sado's academy which will give hope to the joseon common people to dream of equality. very nice!! i am in content for having watched it. thank you for the uploaders online!

rskdrama Jan 07 2015 8:11 pm I am just about to finish this drama. One episode left. I quite liked the mature acting by Je-Hoon. I also liked the way the child actress Ji-Dam portrayed her character. I have seen her various other drama, and she has been consistently performing. On the other hand the adult Ji-Dam, disappointed me in this drama, she did well in one other drama I have seen her in (school girl gets pregnant..). Sado's wife also did a great job. I understand from history that the king himself was not as bad as portrayed in this drama (he is supposed to have done many good things for joseon, may be all that was after sado's death??!!).. interesting drama and a good one for Je-Hoon.

The detective and forensic work was an interesting twist to the usual period drama we see. The relationship between the Kind and the Crown Prince is especially poignant, pretty epic acting on Ha Suk Kyu's part. Definitely recommend.

katya patskevich Dec 18 2014 11:25 am Secret Door was my most anticipated drama of the year since it was written by one my favorite Korean screenwriters (The Great King Sejong, Hwang Jin-Yi) and it did live up to my expectations. It was an enjoyable ride throughout the whole series. I was fascinated by its gripping plot, heartfelt characters and enchanting music. The ratings didn’t surprise me since this drama does appear to be the kind of show that inspires an all-or-nothing reaction: either you like it, or you really don’t. But there’s always a bunch of dramas with usual bin of tropes where historical events feel more like unnecessary background to numerous love triangles. I appreciated the different approach and was eager to see it play out. Although it ended badly in other people’s eyes I didn’t feel like there was any need in gory and angsty ending. I liked how drama encouraged a shift away from those tired hysterics. The epilogue was really nice. I think the story was about importance of taking the difficult but right path even if it’s seen by others as delusional one. Sometimes you should not go where the path may lead but go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. The prince's vision for a better world has changed people around him including his father. What's more, he was able to save his beliefs, sacrificing himself and abandoning his dream that was eventually realized through his son.

Ayuni Nov 01 2014 9:25 am This drama is entertaining especially the King, The crown Prince and Minister Kim Teak. The King and Kim Teak fight and threatened each other like actual co-workers do, light but meaningful. Their expression are not overly dramatic or theatrical as much as other Sageuk dramas so those who used to watch and expect dramatic Sageuk will not find it in this series. It is all about natural action of a person that reminds you of your own office drama or meeting where people criticised each other with manners. But what excite me of this drama is the countdown time. The time when finally everything ends. The intense and heartwrenching verdict of the King to his Crown Prince that lead to his death, that is the actual climax. Hoping the writer will do their best to end this drama as memorable as possible.

I hope they're not exactly the same and will each offer up something different. It sounds like this will be along the "Sado was killed for political reasons" line of thinking. He's always either vilified as crazy or made out to be some political martyr...

Perfect examples are ------>>>> "My Sassy Girl" ....... "Friend" ...... "Tazza" ...... "That Winter, the Wind Blows" ..... "Hwang Jin-Yi" ..... etc... .... .... and many more, but these are what came to mind.... ...... .... ..... I have seen both the movie and drama versions of all the aforementioned, and it was entertaining and well worth it...

We all heard about Sado movie starring (Song kang ho & Yoo ah in & Moon geun young) they started filming and it will published next year I mean I don't get it why do we need the same story when we have one already?
