Yukimura Sanada was born to a lord who owned a small piece of land in Shinsu (present day Nagano Prefecture). He survived using wisdom, courage and much effort during the Sengoku period. Eventually, he grew into a much respected samurai warrior.

During The Siege of Osaka, Yukimura Sanada constructed the small fortress "Sanada-maru" on the periphery of Osaka Castle. His fortress successfully repelled the much larger invading forces of Tokugawa Ieyasu.

"Sanadamaru" takes over NHK's Sunday 20:00 time slot previously occupied by "Hanamoyu" and followed by "Naotora: The Lady Warlord."

Yoko Nov 14 2017 9:21 am @Haelil Most of the Information can be found on Japanese websites like rokumonsen or sanadada, senjp or in Sanada books. However there is now also a English Wikipedia Page for Yoshitsugu's daughter which summarizes her life decently. The title of her english wikipedia page is Chikurin-in. Japanese Sites go more in dept though.

Historically she was not only important politically during Sekigahara for the Western aligned Sanada (Yukimura and Masayuki) due to the downfall of her father Yoshitsugu along with his BFF Ishida Mitsunari, she was also Yukimura's helpmeet during exile and the mother of his two heirs Daisuke and Daihachi. She accompanied Yukimura to Osaka and after Yukimura and Daisuke (a child soldier and their oldest son who was 12 to 14 years old) died she was captured by Asano Nagaakira's troups along with her daughter Akuri and handed over to the Tokugawa. The Tokugawa didn't execute her and she became a nun however she still stayed in contact with her children. Most of her children ended up in Sendai (Tohoku) in Date aligned clans like the Tamura and Katakura. She is buried in Kyoto in a temple.

The problem the script authors had was that she historically was much younger than Yukimura, around 12 to 20 years younger since she wasn't his first wife. She was probably 14 or younger and he was pushing 30 or in his 30s when they married shortly before Sekigahara. They got along really well historically probably because she was one of his younger wives and she is his most well known wife since she is his only noteworthy wife due to accounts and anecdotes. I think Matsuoka Mayu was fitting however I thought that the age difference with Sakai was too big. In Gunshi Kanbee Yoshimoto Miyu played Eihime (15 to 16 years old) the second wife of Kuroda Nagamasa (in his 30s) played by Matsuzaka Tori thus a similar age difference to YukimuraxYoshitsugu's daughter. However EihimexNagamasa looked fitting since Matsuzaka Tori's age was close to the character he played. It probably would have been better if they would have chosen a 30-something actor who they could have later aged up for Yukimura instead of an actor in his 40s.

Well and the other problem was that they chose Takanashi Naiki's daughter (Kiri) as the heroine despite similar to Hotta Sakubei's sister historically being an older wife from Yukimura's youth and not being a person of interest. Thus to portray Kiri as the heroine they had to portray Hotta Sakubei's sister and Yoshitsugu's daughter as the 'evil girls' and shove Kiri into every possible scene to give Nagasawa Masami screentime.

I think the support cast in Sanadamaru was really decent though (Yodo, Hideyoshi, Masayuki for example).

Yoko Oct 27 2017 5:36 pm The modern speech was a bad idea as was the downplaying/unfair bashing of several important female characters. I also dislike that Yukimura is coldhearted and uncaring towards Yoshitsugu's daughter despite them having had a very close relationship in reality. Seriously this drama's Yukimura was so plain he should have been happy to get such a gorgeous young girl who has a really sad life and gives him the long awaited heirs. Sad that people will now think that Sanada Yukimura hated Yoshitsugu's daughter and bullied/never talked to her.

The portryal of Hotta Sakubei's sister (Ume) and Takanashi Naiki's daughter (Kiri) is wrong as well. Hotta Sakubei's sister was Yukimura's original legal wife and first wife. She didn't die during the Siege of Ueda and he actually either divorced her or took away her status so that Otani Yoshitsugu's daughter (wife nr. 4) could get a higher status after Daisuke was born. Takanashi Naiki's daughter (wife nr. 2) never played a big role and was not present during Kudoyama and Osaka. Otani Yoshitsugu's daughter actually supported Yukimura during Kudoyama by working, developing the sanadahimo and raising many children.

Ina's portryal was also another problem since she always had to share screentime with Nobuyuki's cousin and exwife (Sanada Nobutsuna's daughter).

Yumiko May 28 2017 12:49 am A very inaccurate Taiga it has many historical errors and the script is very uneven. Also Sakai Masato wasn't a fitting Yukimura if you compare to Kusakari in Sanada Taiheiki the portrayals are world's appart. Nagasawa Masami's character got too much screentime and was always pushed into scenes where she didn't belong and took away screentime from more important female Sanada characters like Ina or Otani Yoshitsugu's young daughter and even received more screentime than Chacha/Yodo.

Mayanee Feb 12 2017 2:45 am It's a bad and historically inaccurate Taiga since it spreads false information about Nagasawa Masami's largely fictional character Kiri (based on Yukimura's second wife Takanashi Naiki's daughter) who historically did nothing and didn't meet any characters she meets on the show. She is pushed into every scenario just to give Nagasawa as much screentime as possible.

The heroine should have been Otani Yoshitsugu's daughter played by Matsuoka Mayu who was Yukimura's fourth wife who was actually important and relevant for Yukimura's life.
