A Korean art history lecturer (Lee Young-Ae) discovers the diary of historical figure Shin Saimdang. The art history lecturer unravels the secret of a mysterious portrait.

"Saimdang, Memoir of Colors" takes over the Wednesday & Thursday 22:00 time slot previously occupied by "The Legend of the Blue Sea" and followed by "Suspicious Partner" on May 10, 2017.
Early Korean working title was "Saimdang, the Herstory ."
Drama series is the first acting role for actress Lee Young-Ae since 2005 film "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" and her first drama series role since 2003 MBC drama "A Jewel in the Palace."
Lee Young-Ae plays two characters in the drama series. Shin Saimdang (born October 29, 1504) is an artist, calligraphist, poet and she appears on the current South Korean 50,000 won bill.
Actor Kam Woo-Sung was offered the lead male role, but declined.
First script reading took place August 4, 2015 at SBS Ilsan Production Center in Tanhyun, South Korea. Lee Young-Ae, Oh Yoon-Ah, Yun Da-Hun, Kim Hae-Sook and other cast members attended except for lead actor Song Seung-Heon.
Filming began August 10, 2015 and finished June 4, 2016.

Drama series was shortened from its originally planned 30 episodes to 28 episodes.

The sacrifice, pure undying n commitment of love like no other. Hope that one day I can visit Joseon to see n feel the atmosphere of these two undying unfiorgven love. I cried n overjoy if the fact that they may finally be together at the end but not to be. The cast members are true reflection of these two undying love from these beautiful human. It also show the difference of culture n the appreciation of historical time. I love.. . love...this drama. The best I have ever seen in Korean drama. Thank you for sharing the true meaning of commitment, undying love and sacrifice these people have for their own self.

After rewatching 4 times, I can say that this drama has all the eleme nts of a great clasic meant to last even after all the other dramas have faded into oblivion. Every moment in this drama was interesting captivating, thrilling and full of awe. I love how the story was woven into something that leaves you awe-struck. I actually felt depressed after watching it as I missed the characters played by an all-star cast who looked so convincing in their acting. This drama is highly recommended across all types of audiences.. It is so pure and clean.. There are no passionate kissing or bed scenes but you will really feel the passion of selfless love between the two lovers. It combines all the ingredients of a great classic-I love the poetry, showcase of artistic works and especially promoting values of love, faithfulness, filial piety, forgiveness, courage, loyalty, and many more felt in every scene..the panoramic, majestic views always leave me in a trance. If you havent watched this, do give it a try and you wont regret it.

There are too many villains or annoying characters in this drama, such as Saimdang's husband and his mistress, the villainous couple Hwieumdang and Lord Min, the King and Professor Min in the present time (played by the same actor) , and even the princess. I sometimes skipped their scene, LOL. Also, it's so sad that the main character experienced too many unfortunate incident. And don't be surprised that almost every one played double roles (or may be reincarnated?)

Marathon24 Apr 22 2021 7:49 pm Just found this drama on Netflix as I'm looking for a historical drama. I'm only in Eps 8 now but I know this drama has an interesting story lines. However, I just don't understand what's the correlation between the King's poem and why Lee Gyeom and Saimdang couldn't get married in the few first episodes. Saimdang's father was still killed although he agreed that his daughter will not marry Lee Gyeom. Can somebody explain to me why they couldn't get married? Hehe. Other than that, it was amazing and interesting drama. Lee Young Ae..woww...she looks so pretty and young although she was in her late 40s when she shot this drama. It's worth to give this drama a try.

I cannot praise it enough . This TV series/ drama deserved worldwide recognition. This series has a spellbinding quality about it : the psychology suspended in the storyline is telling and knowledgeable,informed by the deepest roots of motivation in human nature... This is not a flimsy tale of romance : no ,it goes deep into the recesses of human impulses ,reflections ,and motives in human behaviour..... the whole gamut of it —- from insane hatred to sublime and divine love ... And the acting is simply superb! What splendid wealth of talent in Korean filmmaking ! Big congratulations all round . The acting achievements of the two protagonists in this series ( Song Seung - Heon ,and LeeYoung- Ae,) are beyond compare ... I think I will watch the whole series again..... it’s worth every minute... Again , the whole production is so well done.... a big Thank You to everyone who took part in its making !

I have been attracted to Korean episodes especially pertaining to the Korean Kingdom, Saimdang has given me greater insight to the history of South Korea. Credit goes to the producer for drpucting the history of the country so well . Kudos to the producer and all involved.

I recommend everyone another drama called Mr.Sunshine, also no any kissing scene...but full of eye contact love and a girl who become Korean Independence Army

Cimeng Apr 14 2020 2:59 am After finished watching, I came to the conclusion that why the King arrested Lee Gyeom. The King was jealous of Lee Gyeom and Saimdang relationship. One of historical dramas that I love. I can say Lee Young-Ae is Korean national beauty. Her skin, OMG. Song Seung-Heon is one of the most handsome men. Really love their acting. But I was hoping there are more rather hot romantic scenes between them though...

Jaye Aug 13 2019 5:39 pm I began watching Saimdang Light's Diary to see both LYA & SSH back in a drama. Even before the middle of the drama I was looking forward to seeing SSH's screentime. He looked awesome in historical clothes. I enjoyed his martial arts stunts and that million-dollar smile was a sight for this old girl's eyes. I don't recall him looking that good in historical costume in Dr. Jin. Maybe he should focus on the sageuks now he is older. For the record, it's a good drama.

1. Lee Young Ae's skin is from another planet and she didn't age a bit from Jewel In The Palace

2. They need to calm down with the History of Whoo make up/skincare promoting. The amount is borderline ridiculous

3. Who The Heck Is The New Husband In The Modern Day? You Need To Go Away And Make Way For Modern Lee Gyeom >:( What was the point of the accident if not for that?

4. Somebody please explain to me why the directors didn't give a horrible ending to the stupid husband who did not appreciate Saimdang. Gosh if he knew how lucky he was. He even made babies with precious Saimdang. pisses me off. And he has eczema Saimdang never complained. Urghhhhhhhhhhh What is thissss. Lee Gyeom Should Have Cut Off His Head. what's with the good wife and the multiple 'I'm sorry' when Saimdang clearly had the worst part of the bargain being with an ugly useless male. even his kids hate him. good dad? excuse me, lee gyeom was a thousand times better dad to Saimdang's son. This part annoyed me so much. Saimdang is so intelligent, she deserves so much more. What was she even apologizing to the husband for? For being smarter? what is this insanity somebody please explain why the husband keeps on getting good treatment.

5. If Saimdang was less poetic, she would have grabbed her 4 children and go to Italy with Lee Gyeom. AllyCat Jul 26 2018 10:28 pm Don't pay a bit of attention to the ratings from the Korean audience, I read that they were turned away from watching this drama by stupid critics who complained it was too fanciful and didn't represent the real life of the real Saimdang. How ridiculous. They didn't say the same thing about the drama Faith and all the fantasy surrounding their famous 14th century General Choi Young, so why put unfair criticism against a more fantasy re-telling of Saimdang's life. Why? Because she was a woman and Choi Young was a man? Gimme a break! Korean people who didn't watch this masterpiece really lost out. Never listen to critics, always watch and make up your own mind. This drama is an A+ drama all the way. The acting, cinematography, music, script, everything flawless. There desperately needs to be stories of pure love in this world again. Many of us are sick to death of insta-love stories that leave nothing to the imagination. Saimdang is a breath of fresh air for intelligent viewers who want their fantasy and chaste love stories with poignancy and bittersweet qualities. If the critics had their way they would have shown her life with no romance in it at all and all she would do would teach her children till she died. Snore. Come on! Fantasy goes well with history when so many hundreds of years have passed by.

Lee Young Ae 's acting is soo incredible, soft but such a strong character!

And the chemistry with Song Seung-Heon is just perfection!! those two moved me in so many ways , their love is so strong and yet soooo sad at the same time!

i was expecting that at least in the present days, they meet again so they can live their new life together but not at all !! it is so sad to know that they will always cross path in all their reincarnations but never be in love again?? can they only be happy after they died ??

if so, it 's even sadder.. if some of you could confirm it would be great!

Ana Paula Lima Mar 18 2018 12:36 pm I am from Brazil and I watched this wonderful drama at Netflix in March 2018, this tragic love story become my favorite, their love is pure and genuine <3 The cast is Soooooo good. Lee Young-Ae and Seung-Heon really are GREAT actors, their performance was fundamental for make it believable.

At Netflix it have 28 eps, in that version with 30 eps the end have some difference?? This 2 missing eps tell us about what more?

Another thing that I must thank to this story is that finally I have discovered that this amazing artist Shin Saimdang exist! Here in Brazil we have never heard about her , we are not thought about almost anything related to Korea culture, I have already started my readings about her real life and I will keep studying this wonderful culture!

PS: I read a comment here saying they have never kissed, but actually Saimdang kiss Gyum Lee after she gave him the Jian seal :)

Answer: Lee Young-ae's new historical (espionage) drama for 2018 will be "Different Dreams" to be produced by the company responsible for the highly-popular "Jumong" and "Hwang Jin-yi" (which featured Ha Ji Won of "Empress Ki").

"Different Dreams" will be set from 1910-1945 when Korea was occupied by Japan. LYA will play a Korean surgeon raised by a Japanese family and later recruited as a spy by the provisional Korean government in Shanghai, China.

This drama will be directed by Yoon Sang Ho, who directed MBC’s “The Legend” and SBS’s “Saimdang, Light’s Diary.”

Answer: Min Chi-hyung killed somebody else and made it appear that it was that person who killed the woman and later took his own life. (MCH needed the Prime Minister’s son alive as a leverage against the Prime Minister.)

“Also,did they change the actor for Woo around episode 20 or so? I wonder why.....”

Answer: The actor for Woo was changed because there was a time skip of two years starting at the end of Episode 18. Because of the time skip, the drama needed an older actor to play Woo starting from that point on.

3. “Saimdang” has two versions:

- the SBS version (with 28 episodes) that was broadcast in Korea and videos of which you can watch in various websites;

Karm1942 Dec 24 2017 1:34 pm This was truly a magnificent historical piece. Each episode left me wanting more. What puzzled me throughout this piece is that Saimdang and Lee Gyeom NEVER kissed. That didn't ring true for me which maybe one of the reasons for the low rating. Just saying... For me, the cast were ALL brilliant. So, it's a 4/5 stars.

I felt so much sadness in their selfless love story, it broke my heart that they really love each other but they can't be together. All cast gave justice to every character. It's not just an ordinary story. I learned so much things from the characters. I love Hyun Ryong as he gave so much importance in education not just for himself but for his family. I love them all! The OST are so heart breaking...

The two characters fate was just so hard to bear. It's too painful. I was expecting the characters in the presen to live happily together. I thought they said that in their next lives, they should be together. Why did the writer put such ending?? It pains me really. :'( I badly like the characters to be together. Please make it happen in their next life. More moments for them. :(

The undeserved low ratings in Korea may be because too many young Koreans are not in very good mood these days. They prefer cheerful, escapist, non-sense (and excellent) dramas like "Strong Woman Do Bong-Soon" with the love between Min-Min and Bong-Bong. Or the enchanting "Love in the Moonlight", which is a sort of endearing Korean Romeo and Juliet story that ends well.

Saimdang's story is about a great artist and a great mother condemned by fate to live a unfulfilled parallel emotional life with her true, and deep love. Actually condemned by an unsecure, weak and murderous king. Lee Young-Ae and Song Seung-Heon tell that story in an excellent and most convincing way throughout the drama. The modern story introducing Saimdang also works and ends well.

Does anyone know the true name of "Siesta di Luna" this awesome castle on top of its steep hill surrounded by Chianti vineyards in the golden Italian sunlight?

I was looked back her dramas and found " a jewel in palace" similar to this drama and she got award too. Anyway, it was fun to watch she came back from 14 years later, she is still beautiful at her age.Congratulation LYA! I am looking forward to watch SSH dramas as well.

Saimdang and Lee Gyeom, their sacrifices for each other amazed me. It's true love. They never get a chance to be together in their life but I'm pretty sure that their soul are happy together. OST Everlasting Love made me cry.. I am not really familiar with Lee Young-Ae and Song Seong Heun but I would say they are pretty good actor and actress. I truly see them as the character of Saimdang and Lee Gyeom.

Congratulation to the success of Saimdang, Light's Diary all the cast especially to Lee Young-Ae and Song Seong-Heun, the writer etc. May other don't appreciate the story but to me, this story will remain to my heart. Very unforgettable historical KDrama. Respected historical figure.

nova Apr 28 2017 8:00 pm I realize it is the drama norm for the lovers to kiss and embrace, but I really liked that Saimdang and Gyeom didn’t in almost all their scenes together. It speaks to Saimdang’s dignity as a married woman and a mother and to their love as something deep, beyond the carnal.

The poems, love letters and soliloquies were all beautiful expressions of their love. Very good drama indeed.

Even though the pace is very slow, I still loved the way it goes.

The actors' and actresses' acting are very skillful, they made me capture the feeling of the moment. Everyone is a professional. Not gonna lie, but I have shed way too many tears because of this drama. My kind of drama with that splendid angsty-romance story!

Only one thing that I found bad in this drama is the action scene, it seems awkward and too slow. Anyway, everything is good.

And also, I didn't realize that Professor Min and King Joongjong is the same person, SBS have done a really good job!

Till recently I thought maybe they could be happy in the present if not in the past. But with the husband back alive and those last images in the preview I really don't know what's gonna happen. I get frustrated because it seems quite impossible but I keep on hoping for some miracle :)

Anyway I've loved this drama ! I've enjoyed each minute of it. The actors are so good ! And I don't think it was too long or too slow, I loved this delicate and progressive discovery of each character and event. I usually get impatient quite rapidly and get bored easily. But not this time. I can't explain why but I loved it, loved them and got addicted. I'm sure 2 more episodes would have been great. Too bad that the low ratings made them shorten the original version.

zee Apr 28 2017 1:42 am I might be the only one enjoy modern scene more than joseon scene. The scenery and confilct are better than joseon scene. But overall, the story was too slow and predictable. all the protagonists was made unrealistically powerfull. For 28-episodes long drama, viewers needs more climax and anty-climax in the midle of the story in order too keep up with this drama. But what i can see here is just conflict all the way, i can barely see the progress. It just getting better after 25th episode.

BR39 Apr 27 2017 4:26 pm I checked John Donne's poem "Valediction: Forbidden Mourning" where a stanza is found by Seo Ji-Yoon inserted on a separate paper in Saimdang's diary.

It is a beautiful love poem addressed by Donne to his wife Anne before leaving for a long and uncertain trip to Europe. It is an apology to the woman who is "the compass" of his life telling her not to mourn because their two souls are one.

It is also a message from the distant past to Seo Ji-Yoon not to mourn her lost husband Jung Min-seok.

I'm guessing that the Joseon-time couple will not end up together, not physically together but maybe in spirit (where the preview show them running away together hand in hand). As for the present time, if only the husband didn't come back alive, there would have been a chance for the couple to finally fulfill the love that started in the Joseon time. Can't wait for the last episode !

Not all human beings are of the same quality. Saimdang is a great teacher yesterday and today on how to live well under any circumstance. The poems of this episode are moving. I like the metaphor of the Sun and the Moon for the role of mothers and women in daily lives: "when it is dark, the moon alone shines onto the world against the darkness...The Sun does not realize what hard work it is, even though the Moon is always protecting the Sun by his side." I wish I can keep these poems in mind during my own ordinary daily life.

This beautifully produced drama goes above usual TV entertainment. Also it is not about the past. The agony visited upon Shin Saimdang and Lee Gyeom by a vile, self-absorbed, absolute ruler over the lives of his subjects makes me understand better the immense suffering visited today upon so many families and individuals yearning for freedom and peace by bad rulers in too many countries. In Syria and other places.

The past and the present strands of the drama have just crossed over. I expect that the present story will end better than the lives of Saimdang and Le Gyeom.

I agree with many comments: the mismanagement by SBS of this excellent (and enriching) drama by SBS should become a textbook case for the industry of the bad management of a high quality work by a short-sighted,myopic management team: choice of time slot, poorly executed international contracts, etc... Seldom have I seen such a wide gap between dreadful business management and artistic work of the highest order.

Will the full 30 episodes (already produced) be available for sales in the near future? SBS has nothing to lose, but this will be another test...

There were many bloopers ei the Velcro strap when Saimdongs husband passed her his headcovering. All the paper lights were too fake and others but I felt this drama and loved the theme. Every person counts even so not all loves are sanctioned by the god of love. SSH looked daebak with the hairy face. His tight eyed mean look was thrilling. I know this story will end badly and I will be red eyed for a week but that's why I watch.

I cant believe this. One thing I can see is it is drama versus comedy. Koreans preferred comedy rather than historical drama. I watch this drama online, every weeks, since the beginning. this is my first drama korea I really have deep feeling on it. the setting, the actor, the script - they are so pure and light, but the feeling to the viewer is just perfect. especially the love story between saimdang and gyeom. seeing the actor play on the screen, their eyes, their attitute... they just act so real like they have a true love between them. it makes me envy- the everlasting love story.. even they are not fated to be together at the end.

The King is so ridiculous because he is doing lousy job as a King. That is why I dont like historical drama because it is ridiculous lifestyle and the way human are being treated.

YES, the paintings are wonderful in this drama. Great Artists.

The old king need to die ASAP in order for the young King to be successful in his kingdom. The young King is a better king and dream for the future.

Hopefully fate brought Saimdang and Lee Gyum together and live happily in present life.

Olla Apr 08 2017 4:38 pm I have watched so many Korean dramas over the years but none have captivated me in every aspect as "Samidang, Light's diary". It is superb in every way, the acting, the plot, the history and OMG the art. I was never an art's fan but this drama really made fall in love with art, that's how good it is. I also can feel every emotion of the actors, their love, happiness, sorrow, frustration, anger. It touches on what is important, what is ethical, what is right and what is wrong. I was skeptical to start watching it in the beginning and actually started with episode 6, as I have made it a point not to watch a drama with more than 20 episodes, but the plot is great and not slow paced, it keeps me at the edge of my seat.

I totally recommend!!!!

Given a comparison with other dramas, Saimdang has been relentlessly showing a meaningful, strong performance overall. It might be due to sentiment from the netizen of the 'real' Saimdang that they did not want the author to manipulate the image of Saimdang like in the drama. I can understand that. But from the worldwide point of view that do not have the same sentiment, this drama is easily one of the best saegeuk dramas of all time. Lee Young-Ae is a great actress! Her confrontation with her feckless husband was painful to watch, but so is real life at times.

Every actor is good. By the way, I took a special liking to Park Jun-Myun, Saimdang's friend in both the past and present stories. Her intelligence and warmth shine through a body clearly not of her choosing. It is easy to imagine having a lively lunch with her in real life too.

I wonder how the two stories woven 500 years apart will eventually converge. ore hardships ahead for sure, but them what?

Also, I enjoy learning about how Saimdang, Yulgok, and Toegye contributed to the way Koreans look at life. This drama makes me see the disorders in so many countries today with clearer eyes: good leaders are precious.

That's the real life scenario for millions of hard working women who are married to fools and that's why there is a 1 in 2 divorce rate today. That truth is probably too difficult for superficial kdrama viewers to grasp but those of us who appreciate a more realistic view of marriage can enjoy this show on its own unique merits.

I am not against Lee Yoon-ae, I know she is really good in historical dramas especially Dae Jang Geum but this times, she really wrongly selected this plots. When i saw preview for 17th ep. i thought that i'm not going to watch it. Too tragic and cliche. But then , i remember real goryeo paper won't burnt easily.

For some reason, i love modern scene better than joseon scene. It was too tragic to the point every time she achieves something, i sense a bigger trouble comes along. Like calm before the storm. The evil always be the one who win in the end, it so frustating. The writer make the evil character too powerful (whieumdang and her husband) compare to saimdang and lee gyeom.

I'm from the U.S. and we do not have quality entertainment in movies and or tv. My family and I have taken to watching Korean media, because over all, for the most part, what is made public is good and "clean". I offer a big thumbs up for Saimdang, Lights Diary.

Both are great and give so much information. I think the one in sbs version are much emphasize in history era, but there are so many holes in sbs version. so many things suddenly happened without explanation (that is make me confused) and the international one explained that hole... I think why people love sbs version mpre because I have to admit, the internationa one is more boring than sbs version. But, I enjoyed both version :D

I don't know but his young version has appeared in the present time (Yang Se-Jong) so I'm not sure if I've seen it correctly....did anyone who watch it also see it like me at the end of ep 12 that there is a present time of Lee Gyeom??

The acting is so good across the board! In particular, the performance of Lee YoungAe as Saimdang is impressive and often moves me deeply. I am learning a lot about life and the values of a different Korean era. Yet, some of these values are still alive today.

The gap between the interests of international audiences and those of local Korean viewers seems to be the reason behind the current ratings of Saimdang compared to those of shallow - sometimes plain silly - dramas aimed at local Korean teens.

The king would kill whoever knew the poem because he was afraid that his enemy (many ministers) used it to overthrow his throne. If lee gyeom married saimdang, his enemy would know that lee gyeom became witness too about woonpyeongsa tragedy. the reason why that poem is horrible is not been told yet.

But of course, the bad guy in this drama is getting on my nerves. Whieumdang is so delusional. She acts like she’s the victim when she’s the one who’s causing the chaos. She’s the only who fell in love with Gyeom, but then she accused Gyeom for mistreating her and looking down on her. Wth

My heart still feels sad whenever Saimdang and Gyeom met each other in this drama after they broke up. It’s just too sad.

The historical part of this dram is particularly moving and beautiful. Lee Young Ae acts beautifully the inner strength and personal tragedies of Saimdang.

The way Saimdang-LYA interacts with her family reminds me of a comment that I heard once and stayed in my mind: love makes you live in the present. No matter her material hardships, Saimdang-LYA shows no self pity. She has towering dignity. She focuses on the present and on the welfare of her family and of the welfare of her four different children that se loves so deeply. By the way. little Woo is a marvelous actor himself.

It is restrained in tone and poetic in its rendering, and conveys plot and character development through paintings, poems, symbolic imagery, contrasts and parallels. Even the conversation is restrained, suggestive and not that many or direct. This might not appeal to many viewers but it does fit its artistic, epic subject. I find that scene especially touching, where the male lead plays with the dogs, is reminded of Saimdang and her kids, suddenly awakens to the realisation that one should go forward and embrace life and all its energies as well as disappointments, rather than sulk in past injuries, and then eventually finds his inspiration and artistic talent back after twenty years. SSH is very good in this highly charged montage of scenes without uttering a single word. A lot of the K netizens also have good words to say about his acting, though not that much, surprisingly, about LYA's acting.

That said, watching the whole 1st episode made me ill, like realy physically ill, my stomach hurt. I hate the kind of story where the main character has to go down in the gutter, with a supper villain pushing her even deeper. I hated it with my whole body. Yes, i understand this is a set up for a great comeback and revenge, and thanked god for her friend!

Maybe this is the reason why it feels outdated, because makjang is not in trend anymore (at least not for me). I hope the revenge will be sickenly sweet, and i need that prof. Evil to get what he deserves, that is eternal damnation. Eugh i hate him!!

However, I'd say even after watching LOTBS and Goblin which posses similarities in nature of the drama, Saimdang didn't make me sick of it. The transition between the timeline were smooth and the scene were never redundant.

Different people have different taste about the period of history, the director's style, the script writer, actors, photography, music, etc..

With it is a drama created around historical facts, I find it helpful to read about the true history of the period to get an idea about the likely character of each person on the drama. Shin Saimdang being the greatest woman of the Choseon era for her character, intelligence and artistry, as well as a mother and head of her household I am intrigued by this sageuk.

This sageuk is shaping up very differently from "Painter of the Wind" (바람의 화원)about Kim Hongdo and Hyewon, which I found extremely good and beautiful but in a totally different register.

I find the first three episodes of Saimdang very promising. The division between the past and the present (500 years apart) works for me thanks to the clear and unifying focus on the Keumgang mountains painting from the first moment. In the present, Seo Ji-Yoon faces a life-threatening ruthless mafia. In the past Shin Saindang faces a very harsh life too. The common thread of the entire drama is Saimdang's diary. So, I am not lost.

I am comfortable with Park Hye-Soo as young Shin Saimdang. Of course, Yang Se-jong and Lee Young- Ae are both very classy actors for the past and for the present of the drama. In addition, the other actors are good and well cast.

After reading your comments, I looked at the Defendant. The early episodes are most confusing to me, unlike Saimdang.

A whopping 6.67% of this show, 2 of its 30 episodes, have aired, yet 197 people have already rated it? Seriously? I LOVE this site, but it makes me think the ratings shouldn't be open until a show is at LEAST half way done if not entirely... it's like saying a film is awesome or awful from a 2 minute preview you saw before a DIFFERENT film. How can anyone, let alone 197 people (when most shows I've checked the pages of get 800 or so ratings total and current ones, idol/Hallyu megastar shows excluded, get around 2k by their end), judge the quality/worth of this program's 30 hours, 30 hours the cast and crew undoubtedly have put and are still putting an enormous amount of work into preparing for us, by the first two hours which are barely enough time, given the complexity of this story in BOTH time periods, to give a basic backdrop/set up the reasons why the story going forward happens at all and introduce some key figures of the story from both time periods... if anyone can truly rate Toy Story from the first 5 minutes and 24 seconds of its 81 minute duration, Shawshank Redemption from 9 mins 28secs, or Masaki Kobayashi's 9hr40min trilogy The Human Condition (Ningen no jōken) from its first 38mins 36secs, then sure, go ahead and tell me ALL about this from the 1/15th of it that you've seen...

This isn't regarding comments below ("boring and dated" seem a bit preliminary and trollish considering we barely have a few characters shown and nothing about its presentation are "dated" except the actual art pieces they are attempting to DATE :P)... just giving a score to the whole series based on six and two-thirds percent... That's a bit like saying (and this IS something verrrry dated and OUTdated at that) you know everything about me- from my personality to my figure and my eye color and how long my nose is, my shoe size and temperament or even BONE structure if we just stick to physical things-by a blood sample (it's my field and blood makes up about 7% of our body weight, so I figure since at one point philosophers DID think blood was how to tell everything about a person, right down to temperament and ethics and strengths/weaknesses career-wise, matches in marriage, the whole bit, tttt 7% would be about as good a way to determine if I'm super sexy and have beautiful eyes or am a hunchback with a foul body odor and a unibrow)...

Just a rant while taking a little break from work and organizing some folders and bookmarks on my laptop... don't judge 30 hours by 2. Don't judge the hundred percent by the under-seven you may have possibly watched. Don't screw with this show's rating and the chance of others watching it this early when you haven't even given it a proper viewing to KNOW if it's anything worth watching as they haven't released enough to justify a review!! Rant over... I know its initial rating success was mostly due to being after Legend of the Blue Sea since there aren't idols in this, just as Defendant (Ji Sung's new WOW-level amazingly well-acted+directed, gripping and emotionally destructive for my poor soul series) got half its viewers from Romantic Doctor Kim, I'm guessing... this one lost a small amount while Defendant picked up some... this one's twice as long with twice the time periods to try depicting, even, so it'll be more difficult for this to do well, but at least wait til you've seen enough to tell whether it is directed, acted out, and written well before deciding to bomb it (face it, 88 is a pretty awful score on Asianwiki; plenty of shows with idols that are pretty awful get better scores from kids who just want their "oppas" to be on screen the maximum number of minutes, no matter what sort of bad acting may be delivered in several cases!) with a big chunk of bad scores that I'm sure others give high scores to offset or maybe the other way around. Defendant is 25% complete with similar viewer numbers yet only 327 votes-at least for it people can tell by now whether it's their kind of show (but no one at all can say it is poorly acted... I can't honestly think that anyone in this show has been less than great in the very brief time I've seen them, either! The lead actress, from screaming drunk in Italy to losing her job to being in the other time period when in the ER, was pretty wonderful, as is her friend helping with the book dating of the diary and even the nasty nasty professor she did all the work and underwear shopping for! Her husband is properly portrayed as a clueless, aloof self-absorbed sort who panicked rather naturally when she was hurt... nothing seems off at all in that. The setting for that massive place... GORGEOUS. The painting, the idyllic place Saimdang lived with all the little kids, etc... it's also beautiful, almost Anne of Green Gables or Pride and Prejudice sort of picturesque setting... SO FAR I haven't found fault but also can't claim to know where, apart from back and forth between then as the artist and now as the researcher, the story is going at all! No one can except the cast/crew! I do hope it succeeds. I am equally glad Kam Woo Sung didn't take the lead role as I am a bit annoyed that Park Hye Soo took the role of young Saimdang... but hopefully, since she's concurrently in the series My Shy Boss/Introverted Boss, it is a very minor role (though I hope that Yang Se Jong gets a lot of time on screen since he positively shines in what I've seen so far, as he's both in the past as the young Lee Gyeom and the present as Han Sang Hyun who appears to be the second lead maybe-possibly-who knows whether past or present, Song Seung Heon or Yang Se Jong, will be the main focus of the story)... It is VERY different from both the time slip/time travel shows I have seen AND the historical Kdramas I've seen so far, so I'm very excited to have something TRULY different to watch (there's only so much royal family-concubine warfare/power struggles/poisoning all in your way kinds of stuff I can take)! Still, I won't rate it until I've ACTUALLY watched it... and not the measly 6.7% of it that has aired, pffth.

The modern story of a professional woman struggling with work and family speaks to a lot of women, while the sageuk part is evocatively beautiful. The two young actors are so cute and strike up a touching chemistry with each other. The mysteries are unfolding one by one and certainly have me hooked for what happens next. Can't wait for Song Seung Heon to appear and the love story to unfold.

kylie Oct 05 2016 2:58 am I had to check out who the lead actor was and found that he, Song Seung- Hoon is really good-looking and gentlemanly, as the previous lead actor in Jang Geum. Their looks must be compatible to Lee Young Ae's dashing beauty to starr opp her.

So the first actor, whom I checked out, doesn't appeal in looks. IMO, he looks too scruffy for her and won't look good next to her. Ok, he's rejected the role... Phew, he's not acting in it. He'll be a spoiler.

Can't wait to watch Lee Young Ae's gentle, captivating features.

@Becky I agree to you some of the saeguk dramas are in MBC maybe the production and SBS were interesting to produce saeguk drama for now.

The plot is interesting like the flower in prison of MBC looking forward for both historical drama.

Cypher Dec 15 2015 7:50 am I don't know why I'm not excited for this drama at all.. Is it because the PD is not famous? The writer is not famous? Lee Young Ae is overrated? Because Song Seung Heon is the male lead? I get the reason for so many objections on Song Seung Heon. The only dramas of him I watched are Endless Love Autumn in My Heart and East of Eden.. After watching those dramas, I ended up liking the second male leads more haha! I hope that the drama will turn out good, given all the media play and publicity they are doing now. If the drama just turned out as average, it will still result to disappointment..

I don't really like SSH acting... but.. I think we need give him a chance. I only like his acting in Endless Love (*the one with Song Hye Gyo and Won Bin). But... I really think that this drama will be huge. Because of LYA.

Joey Aug 23 2015 9:11 am I saw this drama for the first time. Oh my god! Queen Lee young ae with super hot guy Song seung heon? I partly agree that some people say SSH is a bad actor. At least he is serviceable. Just imagine that someone who is not very big actor, next to LYA. LYA +SSH is guaranteed for success. And it will be a huge hit and an earthquake. Even though I am not a fan of saeguk drama, I will definitely watch this one because of Lee Young Ae who is forever Queen in my heart.

Dada Aug 13 2015 11:07 pm Nox is right. SSH IS a bad actor and his bad acting will be highlighted even more alongside LYA. BUT he's damn good eye candy so I can't complain lol. But a quality actor? No he's not and that's the truth so don't kid yourselves. I know his hotness can blind people/women into thinking that but if he were fat and ugly you'd think he was a bad actor too. He's lucky he's so damn delicious looking. I hope we get to see some of that fine bod in this drama!

And yes, I have seen plenty of his dramas.
