Seo Yi-Kyung (Lee Yo-Won) ambitiously wants to build her own empire. She is calm and also passionate. She doesn't believe greed is a sin. Park Gun-Woo (Jin Goo) possesses good looks and comes from a wealthy family that runs a large company. Seo Yi-Kyung is his first love and he is still in love with her. Lee Se-Jin (Uee) comes from a poor background. She desperately wants to escape from her situation.

Jax Mar 18 2024 12:17 am Although I wanted to quit this show halfway through, I stayed until the end. It didn’t get any better. Honestly I started it just because of Jung Hae-in. There is no depth to Yi-kyong or Lee Se-jin. I don’t understand what Yi-kyong sees in Se-Jin’s weak character and why Se-jin or Gun-woo even want to bother saving Yi-kyong. She’s just as corrupt as any of the other businessmen on the show. No likable characters. Even Tak is a sucker. Ma-ri is probably the only one we see growth in! And that’s saying a lot…

Gen Feb 20 2024 3:35 am I watched this a few years ago, and wow, this had soooo much potential. It started out really great, the 2 main female leads had amazing chemistry, and the boss lady’s presence and dialogue always felt like a lesson/goal in life. And then somewhere along the way, it lost momentum. The ending… smh; either stuff got lost in translation, or the big buildup to it was just not impactful enough for a 20 epi series. I’ve rewatched this three times, and each time, my interest only went as far as episode 10. Everything after that was… idk, too much plotting, not enough follow-through. I mean, the whole thing kind of lacked follow-through after teasing the audience with all kinds of big buildup, but at least the first 10 episodes still kept my interest.

Let me say though that the mentor-protege relationship was an amazing prospect; I don’t think I’ve seen this kind of chemistry on-screen in kdramas before this. I had high hopes for it, but turned into.. idk, not really love, not really friendship, not really mentor/protege, not really anything. It was all very confusing. It was like the writers were struggling with what to do with the characters.

But I absolutely love this series first 10 episodes (and maybe more). It’s just way too much politics and old-men scheming in the last 10 episodes that I can’t seem to sit through. I’ve been meaning to rewatch it, but uh… I just can’t.

Gary May 23 2023 6:06 pm I really dislike Lee Se-Jin character , the wannabe , a useless twit thinking she can upstage against Seo Yi Kyung for Ms. Seo sake. Does not make sense that the supposedly smart See Jin would rather work with unsavory people to "save" Ms. Seo from fulfilling her goal. I guess she is not smart afterall. Ms. Seo Yi Kyung should drop this little potatohead on the curbside n stop her from being a nuisance in a dog eat dog world.

I also enjoyed the relationship with all the main actors, it was dynamic and sometimes surprising. Though I don't speak Korean I still love the show. Thank you for a job well done.

kdrama Dec 02 2021 10:44 pm I cannot stand Lee Se-jin. This series was really good but Lee Se-jin and Gun-woo ruined it for me. Se-jin kept changing her mind it was so annoying. They introduced her character as someone who was smart and clever but her character only went downhill from there. She became so weak and honestly irrelevant. Both of them trying to "save" Yi-kyung was the storyline that I hated the most. I just wanted to see Yi-kyung get to the top but seeing these two trying to save her became annoying.

The acting is good but you can't relate to any character because of the lack of the humane side in all of the characters. Jay Apr 04 2021 6:51 pm I honestly love these kinds of series: complicated, scheming, political, and very very deep connections that you’d have to put together from clues given as far back as several episodes back. But alas, even for me, it got long and boring. I think somewhere around episode 10? I can’t rmbr. It’s been a while since I’ve watched this series. But it was after Se Jin said she likes Ms Seo and so she’s going to save her or stop her or something. The beginning direction was pretty clear cut on making a protege. I loved that. Then the middle of the series, it turned into a rivalry on multiple fronts, which I was like - ooh this should be interesting. But then the last half of the series was all about saving Ms Seo. Something so completely unrealistic and unbefitting of this type of series. I sat through the old men’s plotting bcs I loved both the main actress’ chemistry from the beginning (omg their chemistry is off the the charts I thought if Ms Seo was a male lead, this would definitely turn into a love story easy), but boy, it really disappointed in the latter half of the series. I have no regrets watching this though, and I would rewatch it again and sit through a ton of hours of old men scheming just so I can watch Ms Seo foil their plans (that’s always fun to watch).

Nain Oct 08 2020 12:05 am Definitely one of my most fav series of all time! I love the chemistry between 2 female leads, how after each conflict they see more a version of themselves in each other, shaken by the differences in moral values yet still can't pull away.

The show decides to keep it strictly "friends" aka "teacher-disciple" relationship to the very end lol. I really hope there will be a second season TwT I really want to see them working side by side towards the same goal with no conflicts. Overall, I gib 9/10 for this show ;D

As to why 1 point is deducted, I kinda wish the script could give more lights to explain the ending - I was a bit disappointed by the sudden change in Yi-kyung's character/ value (?) but oh well... Other than that, Seejin's "hidden card" specialty (as expressed by Yi-kyung) deserves more opportunities (just my side opinion :p).

She thinks she is so noble & wise but it actually revealed more of her one sided stupid actions. In summary : v irritating & unnecessary actions on her part.

puzzled Sep 14 2019 10:28 pm From watching this, I've discovered that I don't like dramas that have no-one I can relate to. The theme of greed is interesting but there are too many greedy people around in real life for me to be bothered watching a drama about it without at least one likeable and non-greedy character. I'm presently up to episode 9 and think that it's time to quit. The acting is great but the going is tedious.

Gun woo too. In the end i dont know even know what the point of this drama was. Everyone teamed up with each other and then turned on each other. I kept watching hoping there would be a turning point but nope, waste of time

Aurora Mar 21 2018 9:35 pm I’m so obsessed with this drama. It is groundbreaking, seriously. This is basically an entire show about a bunch of powerful rich men trying and failing to keep up with Seo Yi-Kyung, a morally-bankrupt, insanely wealthy, conniving megalomaniac who is determined to settle for nothing short of total domination. The entire world revolves around Yi-Kyung. Everyone is perpetually trying to predict her next move, stop her from attaining more power, or outdo her. And despite all she achieves, none of it is ever the goal; Yi-Kyung is only interested in the journey, not the destination. She lives to plan, plot, and manipulate, and all her gains are secondary to this. The only true weakness she does have is Lee Se-Jin, who is her pawn, nemesis, and mirror all at once. Their relationship is fascinating and deeply nuanced, leagues above the done-to-death romance plotline that seems almost unavoidable in a drama. The only issue I had with this show is that I felt it should have spanned a number of seasons and focused more on the interpersonal relationships between the characters in order to allow the plot to stretch out. The series ending did not ring true for me with Yi-Kyung’s character and values. I am all for character dynamicism, but for a character to betray what they fundamentally believe (and Yi-Kyung is fiercely protective of her values the entire series), there must be sufficient explanation for this change. I did not find this explanation in White Nights, which made the conclusion vastly unsatisfying. Write your own ending, but watch the show. It’s amazing.

sam Dec 14 2017 11:40 pm The starting storyline is good but the director spoiled it after episode 9. The whole drama starts to be nonsenses from episode10 and the more you watch, the more worse. How can such a clever woman does not know what is betrayal and keep friendship? There are too many loops and badly directed stories. It had became the same old lousy korean drama at the end. The drama wasted to much money given tours to these actresses and no more money to get more actors. Standards compared to other korean drama: 7/10, Japanese drama: 5/10, International drama: 4/10. Sorry but I do not give ratings based on actors/actresses although I am fan. I demand good dramas and do not watch low standard dramas like those lives in 3rd world.

Gdik Oct 29 2017 10:30 am I usually go for rom coms but since i like the lead actresses i gave it a shot. This drama was quite good. Ain't fighting for romance but for money, influence and power. Usually it'll be two guy main leads for protagonist and antagonist but this is different. No action scenes purely a battle of schemes. I appreciate it but it's not my cup.of tea. There are times that i want the scenes to be faster but then we need to develop each character. Storyline 8/10 cinematography 8/10 portrayal of actors 9.8/10 hahaha i like the leads

Leena May 03 2017 6:25 am It's highly unfortunate that this drama hasn't received more recognition, but it's definitely not for everyone. If you are looking for a typical romantic K-drama, "Night Light"/"White Nights" is not for you. I, on the other hand, was pleasantly surprised by this refreshing, intricately written series. There is no fighting over a man between the two female leads. There is no two-past-lovers-trying-to-get-back-together storyline. There is, however, scheming. Lots and lots of psychological warfare over business matters. I feel like "money" should get a special spot in the credits because this drama revolves around it so heavily. And each of the three main characters values it differently.

For Seo Yi-Kyung (Lee Yo-Won), money is power. In her quest to build her own business empire and trample her exiled father's former friends, this ambitious and stoic woman can't acquire enough of it. Lee Se-Jin (Uee) is a hardworking, street-smart girl trying to make ends meet. She's fed up with being poor and the treatment she receives because of it, and decides to climb her way up the social ladder. She manages to catch the eye of Yi-Kyung, who not only becomes her mentor but also her friend. Meanwhile, for Park Gun-Woo (Jin Goo), money are the shackles that bind him to his father's corporation. He's disgusted by the power struggle within his family and would've much rather spent his time abroad, just playing the guitar without a care in the world...

I really, really love this drama. It's a fascinating character study of three people who all want different things in life, but suddenly have to reconsider. Where will Yi-Kyung's quest for power end? Will Se-Jin follow down her path, or will she oppose her? And what will Gun-Woo do with his life?

Regarding the ending of the drama (no spoilers, I promise), I can only say that each character got what they deserved. It was a fitting and mature way to end the drama - hats off for that. Apart from the emotional complexity of the writing, I also have to praise the acting, particularly that of Lee Yo-Won. Even though her role requires her to keep a stoic face through most of her scenes, she subtly manages to convey her emotions (especially through her eyes). Another thing I enjoy about this drama is the fashion. Yi-Kyung's style is incredibly classy (hello, fuchsia-colored business suit), whereas Se-Jin's outfits give her an edginess that really matches her personality. The filming locations are top-notch as well, which makes this drama visually pleasing to watch.

To sum things up: "Night Light" is high in complexity, both regarding the corporate setting as well as the emotional ties between the characters. Where other shows deal in absolutes, this drama has its protagonists switching sides at will or choosing entirely independent positions of their own. This essentially makes them rather unpredictable, and keeps the attentive viewer on their toes. 10/10

If you're looking for those typical storyline, where the girl lead is clumsy and fall for a rich guy. This is not for you. The leads are actually smart and strong in this drama.

The only thing that would make this extra good is if the characters, Yi Kyung and Se Jin actually rode into the sunset together. Lol. However, I don't think Korea is ready or open to  that yet. =(

I started watching this drama of-course because of LYW, this drama surprised me by this one unique thing... it is quite rare no.. it is extremely rare in any Korean drama i have ever seen.

It is very rare to see two female leads, who are not competing for the same man... yet they are close to each other...

I am sure you know about it by other comments already, the relationship between Seo Yi-Kyung and Lee Se-Jin is whats puzzling me...

The way i see it looks like they are friends but on the other hand they are not friends rather something more...

Besides this point there is nothing else in this drama to look forward to. The whole 20 episodes are full of revenge and competing schemes by Yi-Kyung on the corporate world.

But i still don't understand what's between the two leads... If one gets in danger, other comes to the rescue. What was the meaning of those flashbacks...? Is this what i think it is?

In the end i hate to say this... But i really don't understand the purpose of such a script... It feels like even the great Lee Yo Won doesn't understands her character Yi-Kyung at all. It's not her fault but the bad script itself...

A massive disappointment. For the first time for LYW's drama i have to say it was a waste of time and effort, if they were putting together such a script it would've been better they didn't begun producing it in the first place... Such script is only ruining LYW and other casts image.

Even if they were thinking of taking it to the next level(the relationship between Yi-Kyung and Se-Jin), they needed to go all the way... But i guess i was expecting too much...

If it's still not enough to ruin a drama... The ending makes its charms.... and full stop...

This drama is nothing but a waste of good casts... If you're a LYW fan, do yourself a favor and avoid this if you can...

I absolutely cannot say i enjoyed it...

I will rate it 5/10 (Had to give it 5 for the sake of LYW otherwise it deserves not more than 2, still A waste of great casting, waste of storyline, waste of character development, waste of 20 hours)

I was watching series like Iron Fist and started to like the corporate side of the show so when I saw this on Netflix I just went for it. I would like to see more Korean shows like Night Light. Netflix appears to only do the same in subtitles for different countries but if they dubbed it (I know it's not the same) people will be interested. There is theories on the Yikung being a lesbian but I don't think that is the case, she can be strong and independent without liking women.

For those asking, the leads are Yi-Kyung AND Se-Jin. Yes…they are WOMEN. Why is it so confusing and/or awful to portray two strong, smart, fearless women who care for one another? They're not scheming against each other, not trying to tear each other down to get some dude. No. They're lifting one another up, giving each other LIFE, and in turn, giving themselves a lift. Plus, they're not waiting for "permission" to get ahead, to be ambitious, as I feel so many of the females are in dramas. These women are grabbing what they want, when they want it, by any means necessary. And they're helping each other do the grabbing!

Then, let's take it one step further. It's the TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY, ffs, can we all just take a deep breath and calmly admit that people can…and DO…fall in love with people of the same gender? Yes, everyone...it's true...women really CAN love other women.

And that's not called a "womance," that's just called "romance."

jan Feb 01 2017 7:23 am so ridiculous. everyone's so stupid to get maneuvered in the palm of yi-kyung. i can understand that about the greedy businessmen but not gun woo and se jin whom i thought are both smart enough to figure out yi kyung. they are so naive to the point of getting to be stupid. they have been played too many times by yi kyung and haven't learned their lessons. too many scenes of mind manipulations. dragging too much of the same manipulations and being stupid is getting to be boring. the drama, i think, could have been better with only 16 episodes. plot and actors were good but the whole drama got wasted. Pity !

jan Jan 09 2017 6:33 am lee yo won's character here is not far from her character in Empire of Gold tho a bit subtle and she's doing a good job portraying it. jin goo is a great actor who gives justice to whatever character he is into. the other actors are good as well and the story is nice. light plot about manipulation of people coz of greed, money and revenge. no killings and torturing. only, i find gon woo is always kept in the dark or one step behind. thought he's smart cos there are a lot of scenes showing him thinking but not smart enough. i like tho his warmth and kindness. overall, this drama is great!

Night Light is a really heart warming drama. I recommend Night Light to everyone!!! Howerver, If you decide take time to view, you will be disappointed.

When I watched the trailer, I thought she was Son Dam Bi at first. You may also look out for her recent drama which is critically acclaimed by many international kdrama fans, Marriage Contract. Just a piece of advice, prepare your tissues with you ;) Btw, with what Jane commented, Uee's fans aren't ARROGANT, they're just CONFUSED of who will be the lead one and excited as well because they know Lee Yo Won and Jin Goo as seniors in terms of being an actor and actress together with their idol, Uee.
