Kai Honma (Kento Nakajima) and Jiro Ichinose (Sho Hirano) are cadets at the police academy. Kai Honma is smart, diligent and has excellent memory. At the police academy, he works on criminal profiling. Unlike Kai Honma, Jiro Ichinose is in excellent physical condition. He has a warm heart and honest personality.

Kai Honma and Jiro Ichinose get involved in cases while at the police academy. Based on knowledge they gained from their training, they solve cases with help of fellow cadets and detectives. During this time, Kai Honma and Jiro Ichinose become best friends.

"Detective Novice" takes over NTV's Saturday 22:00 time slot previously occupied by "Top Knife" and followed by "A Girl of 35" on October 10, 2020.
Remake of 2017 movie "Midnight Runners" ("Chungnyeongyungchal").
Due to the COVID19 outbreak, filming has been delayed. Consequently, airing of "Detective Novice" has been postponed from its original April 11, 2020 start date.

Ritsu Jul 19 2020 10:49 am I really love how the story flows. Each episode has a deep message and moral lesson. I have already watched the Korean movie and I can say, Jdrama version really justify it and makes the extended version very meaningful. Hirano Sho is perfect for the character as physically strong man "Ichinose Jiro", he can do acrobatics and hiphop dance that requires flexible and strong body build. Also, Nakajima Kento is a graduate of Sociology, which really suits for his character potrayal of "Honma Kai" as smart and great profiler (because he knows about the Society).

Shino May 03 2020 4:51 pm I particularly think both actors can pull of their roles. Hirano Sho might not have too much of drama experience but he has a potential. He has been improving really well. I have watched Love is War and I was satisfied at how it turned out. Hana Nochi Hare’s Haruto Kaguragi was even portrayed really well by Hirano, in my opinion. I dont really understand what makes his acting unlikeable on that drama. He actually pulled it really well. I watched it with high expectation and he nailed it. His character might not be the character you expect him to be but that is how Haruto should be portrayed. He is so likeable. I think we should just watch the drama first before judging the actors. This is a new role and a new plot for Hirano Sho who has been given a high school role for almost all of his acting projects. I dont really care how good the Korean version is. Japanese versions have their own flavor to it. I have been watching a lot of these adaptations and Japanese versions have their own beauty to it. I dont particularly think it has to be same portrayal as what the Korean version should be. I am rooting for both Kenty and Hirano.

Harold May 03 2020 4:18 am I'm okay with Kento Nakajima's portraying the role of Kang Ha Neul on the movie but I'm not convinced with Sho Hirano as Park SEO Joon's Character. To be honest I'm not liking a single work of Sho Hirano , why this guy getting projects that's too good for him?? Because of him I'm not considering watching this, even with Hana nochi hare I really like Hana Sugisaki but I don't like him so I didn't watch that??, Hirano Sho stay away with dramas and movies.
