Plot

"The King’s Doctor" follows a veterinarian in the Joseon Period as he goes through difficulties to become a royal physician.

Director Lee Byung-Hoon & screen writer Kim Yi-Young previously worked together in the 2010 MBC period drama "Dong Yi" and the 2007 MBC period drama "Lee San, Wind of the Palace".
Korean title 마의 "Maui" is a term used during the Joseon Period to describe a veterinarian.
"Horse Doctor" takes over the MBC Mondays & Tuesdays 21:55 time slot previously occupied by "Golden Time" and followed by "Gu Family Book" in March or April, 2012.
Staff & cast of "Horse Doctor" visited an oriental hospital in Bundang, South Korea on July 27, 2012. The visit lasted for more than 2 hours and the staff & cast received training on oriental medicine and acupuncture.

Park Min Dec 09 2023 7:31 am Why the hell do we need a love square in a horse/medical drama?! Really trying to inflate the 50-episodes runtime as much as possible for such a straightforward material. The drama itself was too vanilla and bland. I wish there was more to the drama than that, maybe exploring more interesting medical cases/areas. Speaking of medical, this is another drama with a godlike doctor and a godlike acupuncture skills that can resurrect the dead and create new life with little to no room in having reasonable stakes. Other dramas with godlike acupuncture skills that comes to mind are: Heaven's Order (2013) and Hur Jun (1999)/the Original Story (2013).

Mike Oct 30 2022 3:45 am I really enjoyed this drama. I loved the story, the medical details, very well done. Cho Seung-Woo is excellent but what I really loved were the six female lead actresses: Lee Yo-Won (loved her in Cruel Love), Kim So-Eun (her darting eyes, youthful energy and puppy love scenes were cute), Ahn Yeo-Jin wonderful as protective and loving for the young princess (while Lee Kwan-Hon was great as the exasperated bodyguard yet protective of the princess), Yoo-Sun was wonderful as the honest, ethical nurse that was protective of both Gwang Hyun and Jinyeong, and Uhm Hyun-Kyung also great (loved her in Second Husband, serious role). This was really a well-done drama, great production. Loved the ending.

I started watching " Horse Doctor" with an English translation. I'm on S 1 E 29 when it stop with the translation in English. I thought to myself why did they stop with the translation? I hate to stop watching it. I want to know what will happen to the lead actor ( horse doctor). So, even there's no translation, still I'm watching it. I just made my understanding thru their actions, but I'm so devastated about this movie. My sister is laughing at me. She even told me to ask Google about this. I wish they will put back with the translation. Thank you.

Rob May 08 2019 6:10 pm Great drama here. All rolls are good. Nice to watch this with a good script. Women were funny at times which was good to see how they act more. Lots of bad stuff to see,But they sure made their parts look real. People need to watch this for sure. I give it a 9 plus rating.

jestine29 Jun 19 2017 8:28 pm i understand the protagonist's intention and i actually find this drama touching and beautiful...although his life is filled with battery and hardships he still chose to do the better path..although it may seem odd that he did put any intention into claiming his real status, i commend him for that. he strove hard just to get his way to the top without harming or using other people or using his influence/power as the sole heir to a massive fortune and his noble claim. a real man i must say! for me, this is just like dae jang geum but i love thjia drama more.

Bennington Apr 22 2017 7:40 pm I love this drama, especially Cho Seung-Woo, as Dr. Baek--I also enjoyed him in, "Tazze, the High Rollers." I must say his character is the most lovable one I've experienced in my years of watching Korean drama. I'm not that taken with Lee Yo-Won--as with most dramas I've seen her in she seems to be sleepwalking through the story. Son Chang-Min, was much better in "Medical Brothers," than he was in this--his acting was rather flat here. As for Lee Hee-Do, I don't think I've ever seen him in anything that I didn't like his character and acting.

I'm an animal lover, and I love Dr. Baek!

laika May 05 2016 11:20 am i feel Lee yo won is much better in her role in this than in Queen seondeok..amd the second lead actress is also very adorable..as for Cho seung woo..his acting is just ok in this..and I dint like lee sang woo acting in this..he is really expressionless..series is ok but Queen seondeok is way way better with very strong actors...but i was just counting the number of times the lead is getting kidnapped/injured/beaten /imprisoned till i lost track..and every big operatiion has to be done by him even when he is an apprenttice and a vet doctor earlier without thorough experience on humans..i wonder what the other old experienced doctors were doin..i feel this is stretched way too far beyond practical realms.

I'm in episode thirty-one (or is it two) and kwanghyon still hasn't claimed his rights as a noble (aish michinom) I'm going crazy ( hee hee forgive my spelling) seeing that 'lord' Yi walking around like pompous trash after everything he's done nd burning the proof of kwanghyon's birthright. or is it a fake . . .? well I wouldn't be surprised if it wuz knowing hw tricky these ancient k-dramas are.(after watching Dong yi I learnt my lesson well. never trust what they show u.) cha (well) let's keep watching (and kwanghyon better become a noble soon)

Is a slave in ancient Korea owned by his/her owner and can be sold or traded as property? Or slave simply means SERF or indentured servant - person without means and they are bound to the job or service they provides to another class of people with properties ? In Ancient China slaves existed pre Shang dynasty and it was seldom used from thereon.

As Haitian American I can find my life inside the script and it was deeply touching to see the art itself and how the actors played this drama as it was a real life scenario...I am really really grateful to the writer or everyone that came together to make it possible...particularly Lee Yo-Won and Cho Seung-Woo.

Whoever did the casting was perfect. I didn't see who the director or writer was until after, and I am not surprised. The story, the scenery, the emotion it brings forth..I could go on and on. I am definitely recommending this to everyone I know and will watch it again for sure. My respect and admiration to all who were involved in making this wonderful film. I'm glad there were awards given to this well deserved masterpiece.

After "Lee San, Wind of the Palace". No series does not compare to Lee San I kept watching and did not understand why I did not enjoy! I particularly because of who played the role of King-Han Sang-Jin Anyone who saw him as understand all Finally this series has not reached heights and rope But I'll never stop to wait for more cooperation of this team

pjdjmj Dec 17 2012 5:45 pm Lots of interesting old Korean medicine/techniques. Rather embarrassing cast/crew spent a whole two hours learning about it when people spend years learning. Cast system is hopefully gone - very cruel - wastes brain power. Good acting. Am up to E22 - wondering what happened to horse in intervening years, why/how it suddenly shows up again and if main character ever gets to and/or wants to own it. Story emotionally exhausting - main character is a pinata all the way through.
