Based on the true story of Kim Woo-Jin and Yun Sim-Deok.

Kim Woo-Jin is a stage drama writer while Korea is under Japanese occupation. He is already married, but he falls in love with Yun Sim-Deok. Yun Sim-Deok is the first Korean soprano. She records the song “Praise of Death” which becomes the first Korean pop song in 1926. Kim Woo-Jin and Yun Sim-Deok's fate ends tragically.

I really appreciate the acting of Shi hye sun because she is well potraying the role.. I cried a bit while watching this...I really recommend this masterpiece to all who like to watch romantic dramas with a bid of sad.

They’re not going back not only because they couldn’t be together. WooJin couldn’t write more poems & SD has to sing for the Japanese Government, betraying her beliefs & Country.

Ao Aug 16 2022 7:27 am Such a short yet compact and impactful masterpiece. Though it only has 3 full eps, it felt like I went through a longass emotional rollercoaster ride. Everything flowed nicely though it would have been better if this series was longer for further development.

As always, SHS did an excellent job at potraying her character, YSD. YSD was so likeable from the start being a candid, brave, bright and warm character. SHS expressed the emotions of YSD perfectly and she made a clear distinction between the younger and the older YSD. LJS did a great job too at portraying KWJ. While his expressions were lacklustre imo as compared to SHS (which is kinda understandable since his character is not as expressive as SHS's), his voice definitely made up for it. He was able to express the strong emotions of KWJ's poems when reading it and his desperation to be himself and not conform to his father/society really showed through in ep 2.

@Maggie who said that their sucide is selfish and foolish, you clearly did not understand their feelings and their issues. They did not only suicide just because they couldnt be together. Going back would mean woojin would have to give up his writing as well, crushing his only passion and respite while Simdeok would have to sing for the japanese to protect her family, giving up her dignity and betraying herself and her own country and people. They ultimately did it together because they wanted to be themselves, to breathe desperately and to love freely.

Fanabs Apr 15 2022 4:39 pm This has been on my list for so long as I was reluctant to watch it because of its tragic plot. I finally gave it a go and find my self with deep thoughts and feelings. Yun Sim Deok and Kim U Jin's story was tragically beautiful. Their yearning for one another and how they find comfort through each other's presence.

Not to mention, the visuals and production were put together so well to perfectly deliver the message of this drama. They did great wrapping everything up in only 3 episodes.

And to @maggie, I think you're missing the message from this drama. They didn't kill themselves because they couldn't be with each other, but they killed themselves because of their circumstances. They've been selfless all their lives trying to oblige to their families' demands above theirs. The only way they can live peacefully is through death which makes it tragic.

Hermy Feb 09 2022 4:16 pm I haven t seen it yet, but as i was listening to her song on youtube i noticed a similarity between her song and an old song from my country that i like to listen to sometimes. After some research I descovered she created this masterpiece by adding lyrics to that song. I m happy to see such a pure conection between my country and theirs, as her song is the hymn of death in Korea and in Romania this song has been around since 1889.

And by these means I recomend you listen to the Romanian song, it is named "Valurile Dunari" by Iosif Ivanovici, or Corina Chiriac's interpretation with the same name. They are beautiful, the ritm is enjoiable and you will feel the need to get up and twirl in your room alone. Corina's interpretation is, maybe, the fate Yun Simdeok and Kim Woojin deserved.

hera Dec 09 2021 3:58 pm SPOILERS! Actually, I love watching kdramas with tragic endings, so I thought these couldn't make me cry since I already watch many. However, I can't stop crying the whole last episode. The actors gave an expectacular performance that they really stir my emotions. Hands up! Personally, people who took suicide isn't selfish. It Is Not Selfish. I'm not promoting suicide here, but an awareness. Think of the factors why they resulted to that decision. They are already fed up due to the pressure of their family and the society. It is not an escape to life, but to live. They just want to live a life that they dreamed of, even if it means through death.

Anyway, it was a good watch. I must applaud the direction, screenplay, and the casting. As expected, LJS's dramas didn't disappoint. Highly recommended.

Killing yourselves because you can't be together? People go through real life problems and you kill yourself because you cant be with a married man.. You leave your family heartbroken just because of a man? Hated the message this drama gave honestly.

The "based on the lives" can mean anything from; they lived in the 1920's and lived separate lives, the rest is fiction; they lived in the 1920's and their paths crossed and the rest is fiction; they lived in the 1920's, met and fell in love and everything else is fiction.

Why do people cheer on married people who cheat on their partner? BTW, I don't follow the lead actress's career but I have enjoyed watching her performances in a number of dramas.

Aya Jun 29 2020 8:19 am When I first heard about this drama, I wasn't really interested. The tragic story aside, I guess I didn't think it was going to be interesting. I came across So Hyang's OST song for this drama on youtube by chance and the MV featured some scenes which got me more interested. It seemed to be more than just some tragic love story and it was. These people didn't commit suicide, because they were so in love but weren't allowed to be together. They committed suicide because they were depressed, they weren't allowed to do what they loved and they weren't allowed to be who they were. The pressure that both society and their families were putting on them and not only about their love for each other, drove them to take a drastic decision to be at peace, because they didn't see any other way out. I think the drama did a great job conveying all this.

Teddy Sep 30 2019 9:58 pm I am a sucker for tragic stories especially ones that this. I really was expected to cry my eyes out but I didn't.

I love Lee Jong Suk and have nothing against him but his acting for longing for his lover didn't do it for me. He was excellence in the father and son scene especially when he express his frustration but he was not as good in portraying a sad miserable man longing for freedom and his lover. He wasn't bad but he wasn't excellence. Shin Hye Sun did an excellence job (more that LJS) in portraying a character that can't be with her lover due to external circumstances.

I feel like this series could have been so much better if LJS was giving out more sadness and sorrowful emotions. He was really good in rom com Romance is a bonus book. I guess this short drama is more of a challenge for him. Which I am glad he took the opportunity to improve on this acting.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

The one thing which made me absolutely furious was that Sim-deok was pretty much shunned from society because of rumours she had been alone with an older gentleman who happened to want to be her patron and help her out as she was the sole member of her family who seemed able to earn any money. Asides from the fact that her parents seemed to be pretty much useless and expected her to pay for everything (this is the sort of parenthood that I despise: if you can't afford to have kids but you still irresponsibly have them, do not expect them to be the ones to provide for your family out of filial pity!!!), the bit that made madder than anything was that these same parents were the ones who were pretty much SELLING their daughter to a rich suitor. That level of hypocrisy is something that will always tick me off: it seems like as long as there's a wedding involved, getting money out of it is perfectly fine. ARGH!

Anyway, the rest of the story was very dramatic and it offered a unique portrayal of the world these Korean students lived: forced to travel to Japan for higher education, while their own millenary culture was being threatened. Thank goodness the Japanese occupation wasn't much longer, and that there were brave people like U-jin who fought to keep it alive, otherwise I fear they would have succeeded in getting rid of the Korean language and customs.

So yes, it is a very sad story, but the acting, the directing and the general high quality of the drama does really make it worth your time.

Im heartbroken that they committed suicide but I understand their reasoning(I don't agree with committing suicide by the way). I wish love had been strong enough to conquer all their problems but such is life. Thank you to Shin Hye Sun, the cast, the crew and everyone who brought this story to life and above all, thank God for Lee Jong Suk for delivering his 7th masterpiece out of the 8 that he has been a lead protagonist. At this rate of perfection, he will turn me in to a serious fangirl because I keep falling in love with alll the characters he plays. It was truly a beautifully tragic real-life tale, retold in the most beautiful way

Anyway, it's a true story guys. Whoever disagrees with the ending, you cannot undo history. This was a choice made by both U-jin and Sim-deok (the real persona and not Lee Jong Suk or Shin Hye-sun as actors). The scriptwriters merely executed what happened in the past. But this short drama was really heartwarming, tragic, but realistic.

The setting was between 1890-1926 (1926 was the year they committed suicide), at that time pressure coming from families and society were overwhelming for a person to bear. I guess we can never justify taking one's own life, but who are we to judge? Emotional quotient at that time was probably as weak as their intelligent quotient. But I really enjoyed this drama despite the tragic ending!

lavallon Jan 29 2019 7:53 pm I watched it only because of Shin Hye Sun..... I'm not really a fan of Lee Jong Suk's acting (unpopular opinion ). I just didn't feel much for his character through his acting. That being said TO ME I didn't feel his love or longing for her at all! Shin Hye Sun is an amazing actress and I'm so happy for her. I liked the story overall of course besides what I mentioned above.

This makes the drama very relaxing and makes the audience feel comfortable with the whole drama. The acting is very spot on and I love how every actors really feel the mood of this sad and tragic drama.

Regarding this end it is really sad its my even worse when we know that it is inspire actually. this is definitly my favorite min drama

They wanted to live they wanted to breath they wanted freedom and they wanted love...it was painful that at the end they both decided to loose their life....probably the pain they felt was intense.. that's probably why they choose death.. And they end their misery together... They were hurt, suffering ,lost but they know that their love will keep them together...the acting was just great i felt the intense and the emotion and message of the whole story...

It was a perfect acting,so real that touches the heart. I just wonder if they were alive today, their story is beyond Romeo and Juliet! Congratulations to the Actors, Director and production staff! Korea must be proud of this beautiful work of art!

This was actually a very refreshing watch since it was short 3 hour drama (sort of like a long movie), but hit all the right notes. Definitely recommended!

Btw encounter with park bo gum & song hye kyo- with their natural & strong acting seems to be good too, plus i’m also watching clean with passion for now (if you want another feel good-lighthearted & warm rom com) & of course kim sun a’s children of nobody- another daebak acting there!.... i will recommend these too for nov & dec- lovely lovely k-dramas...

I'm not at all disappointed with the choice of actors, I already feel the chemistry between Lee Jong Suk is Shin Hye Sun. The only moments where I find the drama not very credible is when Sim Deok sings, clearly, it is seen that there is play-back ... after I do not blame the actress, who is excellent. It only remains to wait for the last 2 episodes, the end looks rather tragic ....

I also can't imagine baby-puppy face LJS with kids, even in a show, but it was the 1930s, so maybe he married at 16-18 by parental arrangement... I don't know the story behind it.

I saw a lot of negative comments directed at shs not just on this site. Please be reminded that shs isn't just some kind of a pretty face who keeps on getting roles just because she is pleasing to the eyes. shs is a very good actress and it just took her 1 lead role to prove that.

I just can't stand these fangirls of ljs. They keep on saying that shs doesn't deserve the role well guess what? A lot of people don't agree with you. Just because shs isn't your typical female lead doesn't mean that she is unfit for the role.

I'm sorry but I really tried to hold it but I just can't. Enough is enough.

chapchap Mar 18 2018 2:20 am am i the only one who thinks of shin hye sun as the female lead when lee jong suk announced this drama he's participating in? I sense it because of how well praised SHS is in korea right now.

Also, from my opinion i think SHS could pull this off like really well considering her act in My Golden LIfe but I had doubt on her voice... I remember watching one of her clips with Sunghoon singing and it was just awful haha. Well, I bet they would just use another voice. XD

For Lee jong suk... I had nothing against him and I actually like him. Just him appearing on the screen is enough for me lol but I think he really is a good actor. I was captured by his acting on Pinnochio. I would just find it weird that in this drama he actually has children and a wife. I can't picture him as of right now as a family man.

Lastly, I think their chemistry would be just fine. Lee jong suk never fails to have amazing chemistry between his co actors and honestly they actually look good together.

In my opinion, she is way more capable than him (her outstanding performance in My Golden Life is proof) and she actually takes on serious, “non-fictional” roles. Lee Jong Suk’s dramas are usually fictional, though I must say he sure knows how to pick his dramas well, that guy, even though he may not be a top notch actor (in my personal opinion, he’s overrated and there are far better actors than him out there).
