Cha Ji-Won (Lee Jin-Uk) is a UDT officer of the Navy Special Operations Force. He is positive and has personal charm, but he falls into a desperate situation due to a friend's betrayal. He goes through numerous life or death situations. Cha Ji-Won then enters into a fake marriage with Swan (Moon Chae-Won) to hide his identity. Through the bright persona of Swan, Cha Ji-Won falls in love and regains his trust of others.

"Goodbye Mr. Black" takes over MBC's Wednesday & Thursday 21:55 time slot previously occupied by "One More Happy Ending" and followed by "Lucky Romance" on May 25, 2016.
Based on comic "Goodbye Mr. Black" by Hwang Mi-Na (first published in 1983 by Songchun Cultural Publishers). The comic is motivated by French author Alexandre Dumas’s novel "The Count of Monte Cristo.”
Drama series was first scheduled to air on SBS, but negotiations failed due to difference of opinions.
First script reading took place January 9, 2016 at MBC Broadcasting Station in Sangam, South Korea.

You felt everything in this drama, sad, hate, happy, funny, agony..And the acting was good from all the cast. They were all pretty and dashing. Plus the main character MrBlack- tall and gorgeously handsome (mills & boon’s guy material) got me glued to this series. I like it?. Hope you’ll enjoy it too :)

However, I havent been able to figure out why Black chose Swan instead of Mari. I know that is a plot but I think there is something missed in the process of Black and Swan's romance. At first, I guessed the reason was because Swan believed Black at the time he almost lost his faith. Therefore, Swan seemed to be a light in Black's world. In spite of that, the more I watched, the more it confused me. Could you give me an explanation for this?

She's a pretty woman but i don't think her haircut fits to her faceshape. (Although i know that it is one of her role requirement :) ) Overall, this is a great show so dont hesitate And watch it. This is better than other overated kdrama. Thumbs up to the people behind this one. Clap clap clap

tsuyoi_hikari Sep 07 2017 11:28 am 6.5/10 - I watched this drama because 2 of my fave actors are in it (Kim Kang Woo & Moon Chae Woon) and because I love revenge dramas in general. But I utterly disappointed with the script to say the least. As usual, the politic and business part were handled really poorly and the characters are not written properly and they sometimes did questionable things that make you question their motives and feelings.

I was really disappointed with how Seu Wan was written -- from her personality, to her decisions, to her hair to her clothes, she looked the most terrible out of all the characters. Its like they give all the good clothes to Ji Won & Ji Soo and left the most hideous looking clothes to Seu Wan lol. I wish they keep her Thailand hair as she looked really good with that hair. :(

But the actors were pretty much fantastic tho despite the weak script. Lee Jin Wook is utterly charming (I finally see his it! I always wondered and confused why people like him before haha), Kim Kang Woo, Moon Chae Won, and Yoo In Young were pretty much excellent in their respective roles. They are worth much more than what the script given them which is a waste since they are capable of much more.

And I really like the ending and how properly everything is tied at the end. Everything is pretty much predictable and you can see from far the twists before it unfold -- but I still enjoy it nonetheless. But I dont think I will check anything else that come out from the same writer ever again unfortunately.

Don't be hesitant due to low ratings. This is one of its kind revenge melodrama you will remember! Great music,writing and direction.

Semperlei Aug 21 2017 12:34 am perfect! everything in this drama is perfect! story wise, direction, very good acting of all characters and how the story unfolds are all perfect! an action, suspense, mystery, drama, comedy and lots of romance in one were all here that makes this kdrama so perfect for me.. hats off to all the characters even the supporting roles gave an outstanding performance...meutong was so good in giving out the comic in this show..the devil baek eun do was so good in his role that you will really hate him..the 2nd lead role was so good that you will love him and hate him at the same time.. min su jae delivered his character so great that despite his greed he can pull off that love in his eyes for his beautiful wife... the lead actress kim swan is beautifully strong giving out unconditional love.. loving without expecting in return.. her line " one sided love is still love " during scene in jail with black made me cry a lot... and of course the very versatile of them all, mr. black is the best! wow! how many actors can be boy next door and ruggedly hamdsome at the same time?! only very few and lee jin wook is one of them.. brilliant acting.. he sincerely shows his sadness, hatred and love convincingly... and i have to thank the writer and director in ensuring that every episode give you all the feels.. being in suspense, happy and in love .. as in every episode .. the last time i have this feel is in kill ne,heal me and now goodbye mr black.. definitely on my top list of my kdrama favorites if not no. 1. i love you mr. black!!!

MVGVICKY Jun 27 2017 9:49 am OMG..i hate this drama..the ending is so grrrrrr.. i want to be fair to actors and actresses of this drama,they are all very goid...but they don't come up with a good ending.The story here is he has money but he didn't seek proper treatment ..he waited to die and revenge without a good outcome..grrrrrr..i wasted my tym watching this..it's like in uncontrollably fond..sad story..i knew that everyone of us may die but if you have money and fame chances to survive..are higher compare to those who don't have ..seek proper advice or any alternative...Don't watch if you have history of depression.

Does anyone know who Mr. Nam is???? I don't see the character's name in the actor/actress listed below? His name was mentioned several times through out the show. Maybe I saw him earlier in the show, or some where along the line, but sometimes I have trouble remembering who is who, as their names at times are so similar.

Cute Woo-Jin (Song Jae-Rim) lost the girl he liked. I like all the roles in has played in. Two of my favorites are Two Weeks and Inspiring Generation. He had some comedy to his role which was nice.

I liked Lee Won-Jong also. His role was serious and comedic also.

christina Jun 30 2016 11:23 pm Its a drama, I kept telling myself. Many things do not happened like this in real life. So i was not too upset about the storyline. Although I read soompi that Lee Jin-Wook and Moon Chae-Woon worked hard on scenes together, I somehow sensed uneasiness between them...just observe the way they hugged....and many scenes too. Although its drama and fake, we enjoyed the show like its a story rolling in front of our eyes or else we must as well read a book. Apart from that, I think every casts did very well. I am not being bias, but whoever work with LJW always do well. I think he's a humble person, natural and fun to be with. All casts who had ever worked with him in his other dramas always showed very natural acting skills. Yu In-Young should be given more challenging roles in future...she's pretty, but most of her roles are similar so I always see the same expression. Lee Won-Jong is so funny and Jeon Kuk-Hwan really frightened me...well done.

LJW is not as good as he was in his previous drama NINE, KKW is not as good as he was in GOLDEN CROSS, And MCW also is not as good as she was in THE INNOCENT MAN and GOOD DOCTOR. YIY is quite good just like before. The supporting casts are even at their best/better than the main actors in this drama.

And secondly, about SJ and Mari, they both wanted children and the ploy of her being pregnant was to keep the marriage afloat after JW came back .... loving her since she was 10 as SJ declared while in prison not cos she was JW's girlfriend was a great twist ... no lies from him definitely ... as SJ had shown his love for her throughout the drama very well..

I noticed in the early episodes that Ji-Ryoon turned it over on his desk when Black walked into his office. And when Black asked Ji-Ryoon "if he knew anything about his dad's will," he said "he didn't." But was looking at it after Black left.

Why doesn't Sun-Jae want Ma-Ri to have children???

auxilia Jun 15 2016 9:59 am @kraze, I think Lee Jin Wook has acted very well, he has so many different parts to act in this drama, he smiled,played funny,sad,cried,endured his pain,and his awecome thrilling action scenes. His scenes when his father died ,when he knows Sun Jae betrayed him, when he cried to find his younger sis is blind, and II like the most the scenes when he and Sun Jae talked at the prison,full of emotions! So, I do not agree he is flat , even his voice delivering emotions very perfectly！The sound of his crying when his father died ,when he saw his father frozen dead corpse after 5 yrs's death , and when his scream of great pain of illness and Swan asked him to not endure the pain,just scream it out lloud , his voice of scream of the pain was really real, just like one who is really suffering in pain, I cried when I heard his crying and screaming voices and of course combined with his perfect acting and facial expressions that described all just like in real, I relly find him a good and talented actor !

Also love the comedy scenes by Meutong , so funny, he is Black's 1st wife :-) Overall, this drama really win my heart , tq MBC, love you all *_*

The Korean shows always seem to have a similar theme. Two guys like one girl, or two girls like one guy. And the end result is one of them lose out.

I have never seen any couple with such a chemistry, and I must admit the kiss scenes was the best in all Korean dramas！It was kind of real kiss, so much feels in it ！I will miss this drama ... if you havem't watched this drama, you should watch it ！

a Drama indeed-- a plot full of twists, antagonists that you'll easily hate, an adorable couple in love, thrown in a world full of coincidences, with logics often thrown out the window... things that could only happen in a drama indeed :D I'm not exactly complaining, those are often the reasons why we watch dramas anyway ;) ...My main issue is the lack of character background and/or development. I would've like to know what drove those hateful and malicious characters to be that way, rather than thinking they're simply evil psychopaths. Having said that, what I love the most in this drama are the characters as well-- Black and Swan really look good together, such a loving and honest couple, and I think Swan is one of the most sensible kdrama heroine I've seen. I also love all the minor characters, they did a great job and the story wouldn't have been as good without them. I'm also impressed that in a setting that is dark and serious, they were able to pull off those comedic scenes without looking too out of place :) The plot is good but I'm not too impressed having read that the comics this is based on is inspired by "The Count of Monte Cristo" (which is a real masterpiece <3 )

Thanks to MBC to air this drama and extend it into 20 eps！This is the best gift for me in 2016 ^_^ I followed up the progress and news of this drama from the very beginning , sad when SBS declined airing it , but luckily it was took over by MBC and now the result is this is a great drama, so thank you MBC, you rock ！ ^_^

rainkin May 21 2016 5:22 pm after watching this drama i realized that Kim kang woo is a much better actor than Lee jin wook..Lee jin wook expressions are very wooden and somewhat strange to read as well..and this drama moved from being promising to extremely poor plot and execution and direction..and a better lead actor and director could have been beneficial..and i dont understand when u r dying any day and have tonnes of revenge to take ..where the hell do u find tym for dating every other moment and at some points it felt as if the lead had split personas..very revengeful one moment and next moment no regrets/pain full of romance..normally this would be impossible

I don't understand that you have a fatal illness or perhaps a huge piece stuck in your head .. but you have other things to care about ...it goes worse. But wait dont worry no matter how many times you get blows in your head .. you survive after all you are front lead.... Seriously I really like this drama but its ending is soo predictable like all the other drama you will survive despite your fatal condition its really irritates me .... :-(

I couldn't fathom why GMB has low ratings. This drama deserves more. It could even compete with Descendants of the Sun, honestly speaking. Too bad, GMB was aired almost right after DOTS. Considering DOTS' widespread popularity, it somehow overshadowed GMB because even after DOTS was over, lots of people are still suffering from it haha. I'm a really big fan of DOTS myself, but I could definitely say that Goodbye, Mr. Black is almost as good as DOTS :)

I will definitely miss this drama. Keeping my fingers crossed for a happy ending for Mr. Black and Swan ^_^ #BlackSwan

jan May 13 2016 6:18 am Many have written against this drama. everyone has his/her own standard in what they watch, see or hear. every movie or tv series has its own flaw. no such thing as perfection. this drama is great as far as my own standard is concern. it has flaws like others but it's entertaining. it's not the typical revenge drama from korea. it has its comedic and romantic side of it. ji won character is basically a jolly and matured person. he takes things light tho seriousness is still there. he doesn't jump into anything drastically. khaya is determined and stubborn yet reasonable. she's kind hearted and patient. the 2 characters compliment each other. jin wook and chae won are giving their justice.. very effective.. they are such good actor and actress and i commend them for that. kang woo is also effective as villain.. i get to hate his character as much as i love ji won. characters have been identified coz the actors and actresses are all great. every episode makes me eager to watch the next coz of the unpredictability of the story. little twists here and there makes every episode exciting to look forward to. kudos to everyone who are involved and connected in this tv series. have liked lee jin wook since "i need romance 2." made me interested to watch his older dramas. sad that there are only 2 episodes left. will surely miss "goodbye mr. black." Hope they don't kill ji won at the end for it to end well!

alla May 12 2016 10:32 am this drama could have really good but alas is just watchable..there are so many shortcomings..first of all the transition from one scene to other is so irrational and then back and forth btw 2-3 scenes with no relation..the awkward moents at which the kisses come hugs come..the plain ways in which the mysteries unravel like thats a normal thing..n for godsake i dont understand when black has so less tym left and is painfully ill and n that time has to accomplish hell lot of revenge...i wonder where in the world he gets all the time and energy for dating..i mean his every other scene is a love scene..a least he could have opted for treatment in this time..and practically a person who has revenge on his mind,his father murdered,he himself shot and fatally wounded, his sister turned blind,his lover snatched away can in no circumstance act so cool and romantic and cracking jokes here and there..i mean there is just no tension in this revenge drama like its all for fun..direction is really bad..and acting wise also both LJW and MCW are not that impressive

In TPM, the male lead went out for revenge with the female lead's support and was blinded in the end but both lived happily ever after.

Hope Swan will look after Black for the rest of her life too as paying back her father's sin since Black has a brain aneurysm and it is a life and death situation.

For some reason their brains never imagine that the evil guy might not keep his promise and could still hurt the girl when he's in jail. I find this part in dramas so cliche and unrealistic and dumb...can writers figure out another way to make the main actor a good person instead of doing this sacrificial crap.

Please don't make any differences between lee jin wook and song joon ki. Both of them have their own styles of acting. I also love song joon ki when he pairs with moon chae woon in Innocent man but past is past. To show they're a good leading actor or actress they need to get along with every each of their partners in their drama and i saw the chemistry between LJW and MCW. This drama is also interesting with its story line. I always love the part when they named each other as Black and Swan as Black Swan is hardly to find and it's miracle if someone finds as we used to see White Swan. Last but not least, don't keep criticizing before you watch the drama itself and it is hard to make a great drama. Try to fit yourself in their situations whether u can handle it or not before speaks and think wisely. Have fun watching kdrama..=)

Personally, I believe LJW is doing an outstanding job as Black as you can feel his range of emotions. If you watch him closely, his acting is meticulous and natural from his facial expressions, body language, to his hands. From watching his older dramas, you can tell LJW has grown as an actor, and I believe this is the best that I have seen him in so far. This says a lot because I first noticed him in Glass Castle as the lead, which is still one of my faves except for the ending! I will agree that there are some editing problems with this drama through no fault of his own, but it does not deter us from watching the best drama currently airing IMHO (I have not been as excited about a drama since Healer). Believe me, when I say this is a great drama because I have watched countless K-dramas over the years. SJK is a good actor – he was amazing in Innocent Man, BUT LJW IS MR. BLACK as I cannot imagine anyone else in the role! Now that the neighborhood drama has ended, I sincerely hope that GMB gets the ratings that it deserves. Go GMB! Fighting!

I love both LJW & SJK but frankly, I think LJW is more charismatic & charming as Black if you wanna compare. SJK has this baby-face look which makes him boyish while LJW has a more matured and manly look with his prominent cheekbones and features. Black needs to be someone who looks tough on the outside, so LJW suits the character very well in terms of appearance. I bet there should be other better reasons why LJW is cast as Black. Acting wise, before you make any judgment, have you seen ALL of LJW's dramas and movies?

I don't understand why LJW has "gain" so many haters but I personally like him very much after seeing him in some variety shows. He seems to be a very nice person, humble, low profile, and never says bad about people. He only has praises & encouragement for people around him. I think his personal traits help him gain all the roles and he DESERVES to be Black. Ratings are low for GMB, but why is he the one to be blamed? Why don't you suggest to replace the writer or director? I can't deny that the story is just messy, but why blame the lead actor. Is LJW the only ONE involve in this drama? This drama has flaws but which doesn't? We know you like SJK, but condemning other actor for a drama that he is not even involved with is just a little too much.

How is DOTS relatable? I'm a medical student and i still dont relate with all their medical scenes simply because of how unrealistic it was made to be. DOTS is one of the last dramas to be realistic, whether from a medical persoective or even a real-life perspective. You enjoy DOTS, fair enough. The storyline appealed to you. But please dont say its realistic and you relate to it - because thats extremely far fetched.

This drama clearly got released at the wrong time, DOTS IS great no matter how much people disagree or hate it statistics do speak some truth you know... and this is pretty good too (frankly lacks an x-factor in my opinion), but.. yea.. in the end it's just seriously bad timing. Hoping for it to get better now that descendants has finished, wonderfully too.

Emma T Apr 14 2016 8:19 pm I always love Lee Jin Wook's acting and his dramas, but one thing I always worry to watch is his kissing scenes... yes, I admitted that his kissing scene is always good and so romantic, he is a good kisser for sure, but it is too intimate and vulgar that makes me not really comfortable to watch when I watxhed it together with the younger ones or elderly ones... it is probably we live in the place with different culture while it is just very okay in other places？I just hope that the director will not make too vulgar kisses' scenes in the coming epiodes , this drama is amazing and all the casts great! El Bee Apr 14 2016 10:55 am I don't understand the adoration of DotS beyond eye candy... the writing of it is really too simple to hold my attention, but I guess looks -are- sometimes everything in Kdramas... this one has a compelling story that is gripping, and Come Back Ahjussi is endearing. I wish the producers had thought twice and pushed this back once DotS, which to be fair was on when not much else was (I ended up mostly watching old stuff til Come Back Mister then this came on), hit such high marks. I guess Lee Jin Wook is candy "enough" for me (I think Rain resembles the Geico gecko too much to think he's handsome beyond his muscles---a Gumby version of the Gecko)-I don't even care that the men in CBA/CBM aren't amazing looking or that the women are unnaturally pretty :P I just like good storylines and this ranks first, Come Back Mister next on Wednesdays, Jackpot and Monster both intriguing but Jackpot watched more quickly on Mondays... Pied Piper's good, too, but not as compelling/not something I hurry to see like Mr. Black.

Then when he was talking over the phone with Swan,he laughed very sweetly and happily , I think he has been portraying his character excellently！ Lee Jin Wook is the one who has many different facial expression in this drama，and Moon Chae Won also perfect with his role！ She is a real great actrees ！Very talented ！

The plot is very interesting, people think it's cliche but, it has something that makes you want to keep watching. This is the only drama I'm watching on wed-Thurs. The first 4 eps are very fast paced. I expect it to slow down and add more details. 1 another reason why I'm watching this drama is the chemistry between the 2 leads. LJW and MCW have excellent chemistry. Yes it's so far a 1 sided love and the chemistry is flying through the roof. I don't know what will happen to me, when these 2 are in love? LJW is so freaked hot and sexy while MCW is rocking the short hair. All of the actors bring a different aspect to this drama. They all act so well. Each character has a story to tell. There are still a lot of questions but I do expect it to be even better!!

The starting episodes are so rushed I can't even feel with the characters. They should've done more to focus on the character before they moved on with the story. For example KKW - what made him actually so desperate? It was really poorly developed.

Some scenes are really so boring I had to skip.

Even SBS's Come back Mister isn't doing very well either. I really feel that this 3 dramas (all airing at the same time) are really very good and it is really a pity not all are doing that well.

Moon Chae-Won is charming (",) Although there is this romance angle in the story but it's not having any chemistry because Yu In-Young does not come naturally in her role, too much effort that it becomes OA (over-acting). Anyways, so far it's good though the writer/s needs to adjust their pacing and be more creative and imaginative (",) FIGHTING !!!

xx Mar 19 2016 12:25 am moon chae won (mrblack) and song joong ki (dots) were the main actors in The Innocent Man together. I loved their chemistry in that drama, it had a great storyline. I'm currently watching both and I love both. And yes, many people are drawn into dramas because of actors, but that doesn't necessarily mean they neglect other great dramas just because other dramas dont include "popular" or "pretty" actors/actresses. And the main reason why most people watch dramas for the actors are most likely because those actors have deserved to be up on that high spot with their experience of great acting in great dramas in their previous works. If you disagree with this, do so, it doesn't really matter. Everyone, both dramas have their own awesome storylines, up to opinion, it doesn't really matter what anyone thinks. just enjoy a drama for yourself people.

Don't be salty just because the actor you think should have been chosen wasn't. Watch the story then rate. I have only watched Lee Ji Wook in one show and that show was Nine. He did a great job in Nine, his characters and acting eventually grow on you. I started seeing a lot of hate towards him after The Time We Where Not In Love. I have heard that the drama wasn't too great and maybe his acting in that show wasn't that great either (I haven't watched the show, I have heard things about it though) and it is not fair to hold it against the actors, besides everyone deserves a second chance.

LJW and MCW have very good chemistry together. This drama is only getting better. It is only on the 2nd ep so I don't know what's with all this fuss about CBM,dots and GMB. Each drama has their own story/plot. In my opinion, even though I didn't know who LJW was before this drama, he is a very capable actor and especially these types of roles I find him at his best. Overall for those who are not sure if u should watch, because of other dramas I think u should give it a shot. If u don't like it you have all the rights to drop it..

If anything is charming and amazing about this, it would be the actors. They all have their own colors and it's true when director Han Hui said we'll be seeing a new side of them. They are ALL bringing the show, no bias here. Also, the story is very promising, I mean it. Hope the editing changes and the directing excels (though I get why the directing seems a little rushed on the happy moments, I feel that it's just giving us a background, this most probably and hopefully would improve, too.)

And the +3% start rating isn't bad at all, honestly. I am in no way expecting DotS to go down real quick in terms of ratings because it has already established their Korean viewers. Let's not judge GMB too quick, it just started, let's be fair and hope for rise in ratings amidst the fact that it came later than two already-popular Wed-Thu dramas. I'm an i-fan so there's no way I'm gonna help wiht the increase in ratings but i-fans' support would mean a lot. It's like Moorim School, it's not doing so well in SK but a lot of i-fans love it.

At the end of the day, the question would always be, "Do you like it or not?" and the answer should be out of comparison. Goodbye Mr. Black fighting! :)

Moreover, there are director nim who direct the actors/actresses during shooting process, so, they hv to act to meet the director's needs.

The way LJW acts is not different whether he acts with high top actrees or less famous ones. Pls watch his other previous dramas，and you will see that his acting skills are the way it is, natural and effortlessly.
