Dong-Baek (Kong Hyo-Jin) is a single mother living in the small town of Ongsan. She runs the bar-restaurant Camellia, while also taking care of her son Pil-Gu (Kim Kang-Hoon). The people of Ongsan frequently gossip about Dong-Baek. She grew up as an orphan, is a single mother and runs a bar where many of the men in Ongsan frequent. Regardless of what the locals may whisper about Dong-Baek, local police officer Hwang Yong-Sik (Kang Ha-Neul) is deeply in love with her. Meanwhile, Dong-Baek's ex-boyfriend Kang Jong-Ryeol (Kim Ji-Suk) suddenly reappears in her life. He is a famous baseball player, that hid their relationship when they dated. While Dong-Baek tries to find happiness, something truly sinister lurks in the background. A serial killer roams Ongsan and Dong-Baek may be a target.

Cierra Dec 11 2019 9:28 pm I like the show but the relationship between Dong-Baek and Pil-gu is strange and seems very unhealthy. The two are very co-dependent upon each other and their relationship hardly seems like that of a mother and son. She very much pushes of her own insecurities on their relationship. Also, I don’t really understand the reason why she is so defensive against allowing Pil-gu to have a relationship with his father especially being it’s was her choice to make him grow up without one. Otherwise, the show is very refreshing and a must watch.

OMG love the chemistry like when u mixed flour and eggs, they become cake. I need season 2 please. And btw Gong Hyo Jin unnie also has played a single mother character before in Thank You drama back in 2007 so it's not surprising she played her character well. And Camillea flowers were mentioned before in Gong Hyo Jin's drama before , The Greatest love. That's also a hit Love Kang Ha Neul too and all the casts. They amazing. ??

I love all about this kdrama, getting really sad started when substory about hyang mi and finally got to know her real name was go eun and i think dong baek and yong sik (dongsik couple) named their daughter (read the name tag on uniform+skrit) as hwang go eun by the ending of the movie, pil gu name was still pil gu shown at the tv and when they transformed from old dongsik to young dongsik by the plant blind spot is killing me good of curiosity

i wanna see their old face and the daughter. I just cant stop crying about hyang mi, dong baek mom, and all scenes about family's love. I cant describe it well, it just really really great kdrama.

This drama does not revolve around young puppy love but Real problems that people encounter. dodoodoo Nov 23 2019 2:55 am I started watching this because it has Kong Hyo Jin & Kang Ha Neul in it (both of my favourites). I literally binge watched on the nights I’m on Netflix. This drama is so refreshing. It touches your heart in many way. The relationship between a man and a woman, a woman and her child, a woman and the neighbours. Little did i know i would come to love all the casts so much. I cried so much at the last episode too. People commented how naive Youngsik is, but there are people who are this pure (especially those who do not come from big cities), you can always feel their good heart and pure soul immediately. I’d highly recommend this video even though it may be slow in certain episodes.

Hats off, When the Camellia Blooms had the best plot development and closure out of all dramas I've watched so far. I recommend you to watch it! It's now complete and available on Netflix.

P. S. Gong Hyo Jin never failed to impress me with her acting skills, but this was a good comeback drama for Kang Ha Neul as well. Other actors/actresses like Son Dam Bi, Lee Jung-Eun, Kim Sun-Young, Kim Ji-Suk and our little Kim Kang-Hoon had notable acting too.

Sai Nov 22 2019 4:53 pm This drama is a 10/10. 10000/10. I support this one so much! I've watched and loved so many korean dramas but I'm still so picky about which one i choose. This drama ticks all the boxes for comedy, romance (great build up to romance), suspense, making me cry a river, made me laugh out loud. The cast is amazing, they all fit well together and small plots/substories that happened in the background come full circle which you can tell the writing is thorough. The reveal on the identity of the joker is fairly easy to see through and could of been handled a bit better but overall I loved this drama as a whole.

Compared to Gong Hyo Jin's A+ masterpieces Thank You and It's Okay, That's Love it is flawed to some extent but still boasts excellent performances and some memorable writing. Some of the side characters were so annoying and then they tried to tie a pretty pink bow on them at the end but it didn't quite work for me. I could see the twist coming in who the Joker was several weeks before it ended. That aspect of the plot could have been far, far better overall. Kang Ha Neul, lovely as always, delivered a fine performance. It would be nice if more men were like him: kind, principled, not using women for sexual dalliances but willing to commit to them 100%, no matter what. Overall recommended to fans of Gong Hyo Jin and Kang Ha Neul.

I haven't finished it yet and am only on episode 13-14 but Kang Ha Neul's role and character is AMAZING!!! He is really handsome and can easily play a handsome rich guy or even a cunning/smart hero but this role is so unique and he is executing it beautifully. He deserves so much praise for it.

For example, if you judge character A is bad when the writer tells the character A story. you will feel like you really misjudge character A.This drama touches my heart so much. I really understand why the show's ratings are high. For people who want, I really recommended you guys. The ending is perfect. This drama competing with extraordinary Korean drama which is a really good Korean drama and i always thought why the extraordinary drama is low rating after watching this I know why people choose this.

Ki Nov 21 2019 6:03 am I literally want to fold up each and every character in this drama series and save them in a box. They are just so precious and unforgettable. The script is also such a gem. It's incredibly simple with its main theme of love and with that love derived from family. It also goes deeper with the circle of life theme that shows up with all the characters and how they follow in the footsteps of their prior family's generation. I really thought ep.18 (aka ep.35-36) was the pinnacle of the drama series and it just could not get any better, but ep.19 had me feeling like I need to go hug random strangers on the street and also cry my eyes out for Dong-Baek and her mother. "When The Camellia Blooms" is just pure greatness and awesomeness. I give a big bow to everyone and everything related to the series. Beyond words for me. I can't wait to see the final episode!

Nyx Nov 19 2019 6:10 pm I gave up watching this a few weeks ago due to it dragging and it made me sad watching one of my favourite actresses reduced to this role. I may be over analysing the whole show but did they make her such a weak and not so bright character cause she is a single mum? She only begun to be brave when the police officer started believing in her? And he's not even sane most the time. They make a perfect couple but I'd be scared for them to touch the stove or make any adult decisions at all to be honest. My new guess for the joker: Dong Baek.

Come on, there are other better dramas out there with stronger and better characters. The Dongbaek character as a female lead is just so weak, crybaby and pure annoying. I dunno why Gong Hyo Jin chose this weak character. The drama should have ended at 10 episodes cos it's just so boring

For once I want to be the happy ending they all deserve. Love Kang Ha Neul and Gong Hyo Jin! They're super amazing. Hope they'll win tonnes of awards from this drama.

I find it strange how ok theres a murderer out there whose after you but you willingly give him many opportunities for him to go right ahead and kill you. After all the warnings you would still jeopardize everything to be out there in the open. It's a great show don't get me wrong but damn it gets quite annoying how easy it would be to snatch her away. Other than that it's a great show!

Acting of some cast are cringeworthy :( Honestly, I dont understand why it is such a big hit in Korea. But it is not well received in the international community. At least, I’m happy for Kang Haneul because his post military project Is a big hit and has high ratings — which is everything in Korea.

The romance is good too and the both the main cast are doing good when it comes to romance and it is not cringe. Gracey Nov 01 2019 10:03 pm Joker has tan skin and that high nose. Heung-Sik's skin is way too whiter to be the Joker. You can really notice Joker's nose and Heung-Sik's father's nose is the same when they showed a glimpse of Joker's face wearing a mask when he killed Dongbaek's friend. He also has that rough, tan skin.

In the flashback when Dongbaek almost got killed by the Joker, someone saved her. When that water thingy from the roof suddenly broke, someone obviously did it purposely (I think it was Heung-Sik cause he's the expert in that kind of thing cause it's his job) and it was also said that there was someone who knocked on the door that's why the Joker escaped through the window. So there was someone who tried to save Dongbaek. It's either Heung-Sik protecting Dongbaek cause she's good to him after all and gives him free food. But at the same time he's also protecting his father.

Though there's also a hint that Dongbaek's mother is suspecting Heung-Sik and she also said why Dongbaek's giving him free food, and she tried to give warning to Dongbaek to not trust people with kind faces or something. I loved how mysterious the mother of Dongbaek, she might be sick(but it turns out she just pretended to have dementia) but she's smart and can read people or knows what's happening around. I just hope she won't die in the end.

I don't want more characters to die. I miss Hyang-Mi already! She's so interesting. She's actually cool. She's not as bitch as the typical bitch characters, like the annoying bitch character who's obsessed with the male lead. At least Hyang-Mi's role is a breath of fresh air. She has a unique and different role and not the repetitive role of a crazy bitch who's obsessed with the male lead and wants to get in between the male and female lead like I'm sick of those. That's why I really like this unique cool role of Hyang-Mi.

Anyway, I love this serial killer plot. This was the 2nd thrilling serial killer kdrama I loved. The first one was Come and Hug Me and that was much more intense cause there are much more brutal killings. Though the killer here was only focusing on one victim and it's only Dongbaek. They didn't show much killing or how exactly he kills them. And as of now there's no clue yet why he's killing people, there's even no pattern of his killing game unlike with the other serial killer kdrama where there's pattern, like the killer only kills women, or only kills men, or they kill them using hammer or like the Bar Code killer in The Girl Who Sees Smells. This one doesn't have a pattern. I still don't understand much about the green lighter. So he burns their belongings? They're still not giving clue why he kills those people or what do they think his motive. Yong-Shik is the only smart police working on the case. The others are just extra and not interesting at all. They don't help that much so there's no cool smartypants team here. Though I still like that they're giving all the spotlight to Yong-Sik's character cause a great actor like him deserves that. I can't wait for more revelation. What kind of psychopath is this and why he's killing.

Hyang mi's character was so nerve wrecking and just before she died they turned her story so strong and meaningful, like how each person has his own reason and necessity behind his doing. I hate that she is dead now :( and i hate that she had to sacrifice so much for someone who was just using her till she had nothing for herself. I love how the writers have made yongsik's and dongbaeki's romance so simple yet heart touching, like when they cry together and how they stand up for eachother and get all cute. I am waiting for the upcoming episodes. All the characters so well written and chosen. Will miss Hangmi!

So, the Joker is Heung Sik's (cctv guy) father. Why? Because in ep 12 when Heung Sik left his store/workplace and locked it, Yong Sik asked if that was okay since his father was inside as well. So, we can assume Heung Sik's father were there maybe because he is sick. And in the end of ep 12 we got to hear the Joker voice which sound like middle age man and coughing, which also fit Heung Sik's father condition. Second reason, it is confirmed Heung Sik go to Camellia often because Hyangmi keep stealing his lighter, but it could be means that his father maybe come along too with him. Another reason why the Joker is not Heung Sik himself, it's because we still have 8 episode left, and I don't think the writer would make Heung Sik as the Joker. It must be a character we don't know yet. Heung Sik can be Joker's right hand.

You see, you can't blame JR for being out of the kids life because he didn't know. But we can't deny the fact that he's behaving like an asshole. Of course he'd want to be part of Pil-gu's life and get to know him more (that's good and all) but leave it at just that! The problem with JR is he's not bring respectful of DB life now. He acts condescending when he meets her pitying her and acting like she was better off with him before they broke up. He needs to know where to draw the line. You can't just expect her to just come back to you

Anyway, so far I enjoy watching the father and son relationship between Jong Ryeol and Pil Gu. I also like seeing Jong Ryeol's loss over Dong Baek. It's a theme that I'm attracted to. Acceptance of loss and moving on. He has so many flaws and only think of himself, so I'm looking forward to see him realize his mistakes.

There are so many actors I realize are good actors. Kong Hyo Jin is a precious actress. Her mini expressions are gold and fun to watch. Kang Ha Neul is a really versatile actor, putting one act to another. And Kim Ji Suk putting depth into his character.

Sure he hurt her over a decade ago but people grow up and he wants to take responsibility now and it's her past hurt and ego that won't let it go. Both her son and him have the right to get to know each other and decide whether a relationship could work for themselves. Plus when she dies who will look after him? Her mum who abandoned her, the goofy cop, her dodgy cousin or the angry judgmental ladies.

Nyx Oct 19 2019 2:40 am I'm not sure what the writers are up to. It's beginning to make me uncomfortable the way she deals with her kids dad. The cop that likes her is just creepy. The best part for me is watching the relationship between Ja-Young and her husband Kyu-Tae, best couple in this drama. As well as the dad and son. The other relationships have a few good one-liners but nothing special. I've grown tired of this drama, it's dragging on too much. I think the joker is either Jessica or Helena, yes it's ridiculous guess but that's how boring this drama is and it isn't half way yet.

I understand your view point and I do think that there will be a point where DB will feel more free to let JR into Pilgu's life, but for now I think her reactions are valid (her reactions don't have to necessarily be correct, but it doesn't invalidate the way she feels). JR suddenly wants to come into her life and start playing dad and good husband because he's not happy in his current marriage (bc let's be honest, who would be happy when 'Jessica' and the mother-in law behave like that). I won't invalidate his feelings either - but one should have the sense to at least not try to go all in at once. JR seems to act like DB owes him her & PG's life and as if at the snap of a finger that she should run back to him to play happy family. Well even if he did, he's going about it a way that DB in particular isn't comfortable with - 30 million won hidden in some abalones ?? That doesn't come across as genuine, but rather patronising.

Also, If he truly cared about DB back when they were dating (as much as he says) then he should have done his best to keep her by his side. Even when she disappeared, perhaps even try to find her for longer than however long he did (if he even did, I can't recall). We see from episode 9 that towards the end of their relationship he became selfish and prideful and we can put that all to him being "young" (24 years old) and start struck. Not saying that she was right to hide it from him, but when you take everything into account I can see why she chose to do so. Again, I say that it doesn't make it right.

All in all, I love this drama bc it's beyond a romance, but a meaningful portrayal of flawed people.

How do you neglect to tell someone they have a child then make them feel bad about it? You don't get to tell him what he should do with his child. You don't get to tell him what he can do in his personal life to hide the fact that you lied about who your child's father was. Yong-sik is also shitty for making it seem like Jong-Ryeol disappeared out of his child's life because he wanted to. No, Dong-baek didn't tell him because she was mad at him. The drama is painting Dong-baek as a good person when in reality she has some terrible characteristics. I hope the drama has a moment when she recognizes this and atones for it. Everytime she acts peturbed or annoyed with Jong-Ryeol over him wanting to be a father or showing concern to his son I just want to smack her. Lol, ok I'm done venting.

It just sucks to wait each week for new episodes. From the trailer, I expected a typical romantic comedy drama, but this is not it at all. I don't know how to explain it, but this drama is so interesting to me. We get romance and family mixed with crime & mystery all in one, but the overall atmosphere is a feel-good one, at least that's how it feels to me. ^^

Yong sik initially stationed in Seoul? then transfered to Ongsan? it triggered me when Yong Sik talked about those girls he hitted turn out not from Seoul :p maybe somebody can enlight me .. thanks

It remains to be seen if this drama can compete with those masterpieces. I have my doubts but Kong Hyo Jin has surprised me before. So to me the jury is still out on this one. I do agree that 32 one hour episodes is way too long. I think 20 would be fine for this one. Brevity is the soul of wit, wrote Shakespeare. I agree with him!

I have to disagree with the comment that says she complains about her life and acts all miserable - if you watch carefully instead of skipping, you’d know that she doesn’t do that. She’s actually very proud of her life, especially since raising PilGu as a single mother and constantly being talked about. The people around her have made her to behave the way she does, but homegirl just wants to run her bar and raise her child in peace damn.

I also don’t get why people expect women to fall into a man’s arms so easily just because he’s the ”ideal guy”. I think she knows he a good man, and if you’ve watched it properly you’d understand that her reasons for slowing things with him ( I use the word slow carefully because it’s only been bloody 6 episodes) are not because she dislikes him, but because she has this skewed perception of love and she doesn’t like the idea of having him get caught up in her difficulties. I mean, the girl breathes and the whole neighbourhood talks about her. she gets enough attention as it is, I don’t blame her for not wanting more.

There are plenty of good dramas with crappy OST’s and good OST’s that are paired with “bad” dramas - it’s not a reason to evaluate a whole drama lol bc it’s music it is subjective.

Yes, I get that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea - it doesn’t have to be, like every other drama it will have those who enjoy it and those who don’t but bro, if you take time to understand the characters it’s not basic.

Besides all of that, it’s a slow burn drama that has some fast unwinding twists. There are elements that they don’t reveal so quickly, but some that they do which catches viewers of guard. The cast are great too. It’s different, but whether it’s a good different or a bad different is up to you.

Like I always say, give a drama a go and if you don’t like it then don’t continue bc it’s not by force lol.

I like many of their scenes together, they have nice chemistry together, but I honestly don't like any of the other characters. They are all extremely annoying, even the little boy. I find myself fast forwarding through scenes where all the neighbors yell and scream at each other. They hurt my ear drums! LOL. I can't believe this is going to stretch out to 32 1 hour episodes. It's really overkill. 16 would have been fine. I would have fallen for Kang Ha Neul's character right away, he's SO kind, and men don't realize it but kindness is the greatest aphrodisiac. Yet Kong Hyo Jin's character drags out admitting to herself that she likes him. She definitely has issues and that's why she's the target of weirdos. Also, I am not walking away from this drama humming any OST tunes, like I usually do. Most K-drama OSTs are gorgeous, but this one doesn't do a thing for me. I think I will go watch her masterpiece Thank You for the tenth time, where she plays a single Mom who struggles too but in which the script and the music were a million times better.

She is sobbing about everything: oh I am a poor thing I am an orphan, oh I am a single mother, oh ppl don't like me, oh the guy can't fall in love with me, (and hushes away the guy who loves her, oh you can't be with me), oh everybody bullies me, oh I have to earn my own living, oh I don't have money to send my sun to the trip... and it goes on and on non-stop. So there is no single moment when she is not complaining about everything... So, very annoying and irritating...That is the miserable effect the drama has on viewers...

Mastan Sep 30 2019 3:48 pm I know it's very unlikely in a kdrama, specially romcom ones to kill off leads, but I think that the corpse was really Dong Baek, because Yong Sik seems really devastated and the note said Dong-baek.Since the killer has been to the bar and had seen Dong-baek I don't think he would mistake Hyung- bi with her. The other explanation I can think of is that they had set a trap to catch joker and Dong-baek double has been killed instead.

Also the fact this is a romance, she's the queen of chemistry with any co-star she's paired with. After watching only 4 episodes on Netflix I am utterly Obsessed.It seems like a slow burn romance, which I'm 100% okay with, and I've seen some reviews saying the story is "slow" however I like how it's taking the time to build up the characters individually rather than diving head-first into the romance. There's also a mystery serial killer plot so that spices things up too...I have a theory about who the body is, however for now let's see where it goes. Great start so far. Highly recommend!

At the end of the fourth episode there is a scene where there is someone who is holding a lighter (I think it's killers hand) while Yong-sik is painting the wall and he is wearing a white gloves in his hand where in the third episode the only one who is wearing a gloves (besides Yong-sik who is painting the wall) is Hong-sik who repaired the sink that day. And i think Hyang-mi is his accomplice and she is the one who let the killer get in in the bar that night, she let the lock of the door open. But It's either Hyang-mi or the killer is the one who erased and burned the hand writing on the wall. Hyang-mi likes to take lighter, remember on second episode she takes a lighter and put on her pocket.

sksks Sep 28 2019 3:53 am It's fun to watch this drama, it'll make you laugh and hooked because it's a rom-com with a thriller genre. Kang Ha-neul and Kong Hyo-jin's character is so refreshing. I'm looking forward to the whole story, though I'm hoping that it will have a happy ending and no one in the main leads will die at the end.

I really love Kong Hyo-jin's character too! I love her being so good and calm all the time. I'm looking forward to this drama and hoping to get a nice flow of the story until the end. Keep up!

I'm really liking this drama and it's testament to how good the actors are to not stop and crack up laughing especially in some of the moments between Dong-Baek and Yong-Sik.

She really makes the best potrayal for single mom in small city. The reason I started to watch this drama was actually Kim Ji Suk, but then I found everything was jus interesting. The other casts also well matched to their characters. The first three episodes just shine because director-nim and the casting team have made a good choice even for the small character. I hope they will do the same to the rest of the drama.
