Plot
Four parallel stories take place in a magical house where two old and eccentric women - Ume and Kame - live a fantasy world filled with monsters and garbage inside and outside the house. Every day, on their trip out to town, they pick up bits and pieces of discarded junk which they value. One day, they pick up some red woolen yarn. That night, they hear some peculiar sounds, and the rubbish heap begins to collapse. To their surprise, they find a young girl knitting a sweater with the red wool they have collected. They call her Aminaoshi (‘knit it again’). She keeps on knitting and undoing what she has knitted. Then she begins to toss their precious stuff out of the window. The sisters can't stop her, but by now the junk has acquired a mind and will of its own - and starts to fight back. The sisters, who normally sleep peacefully, are now fully awake as all the rubbish in their home begins to transform into monsters. Why does Aminaoshi keep knitting? Who is she anyway?
