I have only gotten to ephisode 40, but love the drama.
This is absolutely the way to teach history!
Learning the ways people thought in ancient history is the most important thing about understanding WHY events happened!
Keep up the efforts, this is so very important to todays events, understanding why people react the way they do, family, clan, this portrayal is very important for the world to understand how and why, these contries evolved they way they have.
This gives us insight into the way we act and react, today.

Just saw The_Iron_Empress series, it's great, one of my favorites along with Jmong and Queen Seondeok. In the last episode when General Yang Kyu and Kim Sukheung died was really sad, I was wondering why they didn't hold up the dead bodies to shield themselves off from the arrows. Instead, they both just stood there to let 20 something arrows shot them to death, they both were definitely heroes who saved Goryeo from extinction.

Wanda, before you go, try to get a copy of the short Korean series titled 'Ruler of your own world'. It's about a love triangle, with the writing, direction, and acting the finest I've ever laid my eyes on ANY drama. It's a keeper and shouldn't cost very much if you look for it at Amazon.com or elsewhere. Highly recommended to anyone and everyone, really.

Hi Lee,
I'm just getting back to your response. Happy New Year to you too (I'm later than you are LOL). I was a little disappointed with the ending of this drama, but overall, it was very good. I am so hooked on dramas from Korea - much better than the American ones.
Thanks again for the New Year wish and have a great week!

The Iron Empress DVD can be found in a number websites. Just type up the original title 'Empress Chun Chu DVD'. It seems to be available in a number of places, although I 'd like to see it released by a North American company where I live.
Lee Says:

This is kind of late, but Happy new years Wanda! As you get to the end of 'Iron Empress' it gets kinda choppy in its scenes and details in the few remaining episodes of the story, and I suspect it does so because the series was probably meant to go over 1oo episodes but was reduced to 78 - perhaps due to low ratings (my guess). Even though it does seem reduced and choppy in the final two episodes, I still love the series and would love to have it in my library sitting next to 'Jumong'. Not sure if we'll ever see it on DVD however.
By the way, 'the Great Queen Seondeok' series episodes were extended due to high ratings, and the result of that extension meant that the writers could fill out that series, completing it very nicely. What a great ending that turned out to be! Another memorable show to sit next to newly created classics like 'Jumong' and 'Jewel in the Palace' -- and yes I still think 'Iron Empress' is above average too.
Wanda Says:

Hey everyone,
I get the show here in the Philly area - it comes on Saturday and Sunday nights. I started watching it about a month ago and I am hooked! I hope it will continue to the end of the series. Does anyone know how many episodes there are?
Lee Says:
Dec 24 2009 10:16 pm
There are some places where the episodes can be downloaded, and I also found one place that have the episodes complete on disks, although I suspect it is not an 'official' distributor in the sense of certain purchased distribution rights.
As you probably have found out by now, you can find the episodes online. Broken links are a problem but some places have now finally fixed their links.
Korean DVD's are expensive due to them being multiple disks, but you can check out what's out there if you search these official distribution sights listed below. Also, these shows may show up again on their networks in the coming new year - I've seen repeated broadcast of 'Jumong' and 'Princess Hours' complete each of the past two or three years so far here is Los Angeles):
YA Entertainment is a north American distributor of Korean dramas
http://www.yaentertainment.com/
MBC America
http://www.mbc24tv.com/?mid=dvd
And also Yesasia
http://www.yesasia.com/us/en/home.html
the DVD list for KBS World, the production network responsible for Iron Empress, is only four pages long and can be found here:
http://www.kbsworldi.com/estore/Catalog/AllProducts.aspx?Page=1
There's a contact link on the home page. Not sure if they'll answer even though the links are written in English and it is also the KBS America home page. There's also a general schedule.
I'm only a year now into my Korean series viewing. My favorites so far has been Iron Empress, Ruler of Your Own World, Princess Hours (also called Palace), The Great Queen Seondeok (now viewing), Yi San, Jumong, Possessed, and Strike Love. A good collection (some history of the recent Korean Wave) and other reviews of Korean series and cinema can be found here:
http://www.koreanfilm.org/index.html
And it's always good to check the Wikipedia.
The cinematography (on some series) culture and the costumes are awesome, but it's those great stories and the great writing that keeps me looking around for other entertaining gems. I've heard from a friend that to be a writer of these shows in Korea is very tough and highly competitive.
I'm done here. Hope some of this helps.

I love the series but I came in on way to late. Will it be shown again or put out on dvd? I really want to watch it from the begining.
Lee Says:
Dec 16 2009 4:56 pm
Heh. I'd kinda like to believe that, but examples responses from these broadcast company's from ratings fluctuations makes me think that the general reason for some scheduling and its alterations are for marketing purposes rather than language. It is still business and entertainment after all: some time ago, it turns out, 'Strike Love' was shorten from 20 episodes to 16 because of low ratings, and the 'Great Queen Seondeok' has now been extended from 50 to beyond 60 episodes because of high ratings. Btw, the final two episodes of 'Iron Empress' feels truncated, choppy and compressed, and I wonder if that occurred because it was suddenly limited to 77 episodes while people thought that perhaps it was actually designed to go beyond 80 episodes. It makes me suspect 'Into the Sunlight' disappearance from its run during daylight hours in Los Angeles on Saturday/Sunday once the series DVD began to be marketed in North America by YA.
Just my curiosity and observations over the inconveniences and mystery of unannounced changes in scheduling and such.

Maybe it's to encourage us to learn Korean
Lee Says:
Nov 30 2009 6:37 pm
. . . Or I should point out that there was once a schedule, but it looks like the designated link hasn't been working for quite a while. Btw, after presenting the entire series in English subtitles, MBC ran "Strike love" - a series I was really adoring - with the final 3 or four episodes in Korean only without the subtitles. Go figure.
Lee Says:
Nov 30 2009 12:22 pm
I see what you mean. There's probably a hands off approach from KBS for all I know. Nothing but speculation from this observer.
Part of the problem really is what you pointed out earlier: -- I've looked around and found no schedule for KBS San Francisco. It could have helped. Hope the situation changes for you in the near future.
BillEsq Says:
Nov 28 2009 4:27 pm
Lee
I share somewhat in your skepticism. It could well be part of the DVD marketing strategy. However, I not think it would be an effective strategy merely to obstruct the final episode (broken link) or discontinue the broadcasting prematurely. I think it generates viewer dissatisfaction more than anything. I personally would not buy a DVD just for one episode albeit the final episode.
Whether it’s marketing incompetence or something more nefarious remains to be seen. Clearly, it does not foster a positive association between the product/stations and my buying motivation.
BillEsq.
Lee Says:
Nov 24 2009 1:18 pm
It wouldn't surprise me if KBS runs the entire series once again starting early next year to fill time for the dtv stations in the U.S.
As for those broken links: I certainly don't think it might be by coincidence that almost, if not all, of the websites carrying the final episode #78 are broken. It may be the only way KBS or its clients had finally figure a way to protecting its market for its future DVD release - break links to a few episodes, and most particularly the final episode, of its owned series. But that's just my speculation, of course.
BillEsq Says:
Nov 16 2009 11:40 pm
Hey Lee, any suggestions on dealing with broken links? First the series (Iron Empress) ended prematurely on cable and now the "final episode" is a broken link online. This is really testing my loyalty to the series or maybe the extent of my curiosity as to how things will wrap up.
Lee Says:
Nov 16 2009 9:42 am
The only time did I actually see a program announcement that a show was being moved was when KSCI LA18 (I live in Los Angeles) ran a subtitled text over another program announcing the Japanese historical drama "Tenchijin" was being moved from 18.1 to the DTV 18.2 - the new 24 hour Japanese station. This happened during the DTV transition some months back. That's the only time I've seen any kind of announcement of a program shift from any of the new DTV channels.
BillEsq, I think the shows are popular already (Asia and Europe especially). Until recently these shows were not reaching enough of the American public (Some shows would show up on cable from time to time but never in one place often like today's situation). As you know that's all changing with DTV, and it will only increase as the cable companies finally get around to adding the new DTV stations for their subscribers. For the moment most Cable companies do not carry the new channels that are in the dtv box. I'm hearing from people now that that is changing.
BillEsq Says:
Nov 10 2009 5:53 pm
Hey Lee
Thanks for responding. I thought Daylight Savings Time was also at play. But I have been looking at other times and other days as well. One problem is that the station in San Francisco does not have a published program schedule.
Maybe as these series continue to increase their popularity the stations will improve their broadcasting practices.
Tried also getting the series online but not all episodes are available.

"Just returned from Asia looking forward to catching an episode of Iron Empress in San Francisco bay area (KEMS on KICU2). Here it aires Monday and Tuesday nights. This last Monday, around episode 70, no more Iron Empress. No change of time or discontinuation notice. What's up with that? "
I've experienced the same problem a few times when Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation all-of-a-sudden moved a series titled "Into the Sunlight" from Saturday and Sunday mornings to after midnight. I missed the rest of the series because of that strange unannounced program shift. Also, an episode of "The Great Queen Seondeok" was not shown one evening due to a MBC broadcast special, but was run the following week. Also happening just last week were the start hours of the series "Strike Love", "Ruler of Your Own World" and "Yi San" being moved or shifted due to the Daylight Saving Time switchover. Seems like These Korean Broadcast Networks have a habit of doing things on the fly or unannounced.

I love watching series and particularly and specifically and crazily and only with old-old costumes and kingdom kind of series. The Iron Empress is magnificent. In all series I had watched I realized the truth that there is always another sky no matter how high the person rank in the social world. I pity the lives of those behind the palace walls, freedom is really so valuable and it is a sin to take it away from one. I am blessed being a commoner................

I enjoy you stories, I only wish I had seen other of your series.
I was wondering if there is a way I could see a rerun of Sunday's broadcast on March 2nd I miss it because I did not know what time it was schedule to air? Is there a web site that show or at least a description of the it?
