Plot

Shen Hong, a nurse, goes to Fengjie to look for her husband who hasn’t come home in two years…
Notes
Shot as a semi-documentary, Still Life tells of the sentimental anxieties of a series of characters in a town that will soon be submerged due to the building of a dam (the original Chinese title means "The Good People of the Three Gorges"). Disoriented people who don’t know how to find their space in the changing world Jia Zhangke portrays. The director continues to reveal his talent as an infallible witness of the changes his country is undergoing, in a masterpiece of great aesthetic and emotional depth, which the director takes out of Beijing for the first time, to the province of Shanxi. Jia Zhangke traveled to the region where the gigantic construction of one of the Yangsté river dams is being done, to film a documentary on painter Liu Xiadong, which was a starting point for this work.
