Biography

Shun Oguri was born in Tokyo, Japan on December 26, 1982. He came from a family of five and Shun is the youngest child (one older brother and older sister). His brother Ryo Oguri is also an actor. Shun's parents picked the name "Oguri Shun" after a fortuneteller predicted a lifetime of good fortune for the child if the parents chose that name.

In 1994, at the early age of 11, Shun started his acting career in a children's theater. He then made his debut in television at the age of 13, in the 1995 NHK drama "Hachidai Shogun Yoshimune." Since then Shun has appeared in many television dramas, usually in supporting roles. In 1998, Shun performance as a school bully in the Fuji TV drama "GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka " brought him idol status. Then in 1999, Shun suddenly stopped acting to concentrate on high school and playing baseball. But, in the following year of 2000 Shun quit school for good and auditioned for the role of a deaf person in the TBS drama "Summer Snow." Shun's well received performance in "Summer Snow" brought his acting skills to light and made people think of him as an actor. In 2003, at the age of 20, Shun expanded into movies.

By 2005, Shun's leading man performance as Rui Hanazawa in the TBS drama "Boys Over Flowers," was enthusiastically received by young fans and elevated his status to stardom. Because of the popularity of "Boys Over Flowers," Shun's image leaned towards a princely figure. Shun did not want to become typecasted as just an attractive face and, consequently, sought a variety of different roles in future films - most notably "Sakuran", "Kisaragi," "Sukiyaki Western Django," and "Crows: Episode 0".

In 2010, Shun made his debut as a director in the feature film "Surely Someday."

Notes

  1. Actor Shun Oguri & actress Yu Yamada registered their marriage on March 14, 2012. The couple first began dating on March 14, 2008 while working together on the NTV drama series "Binbo Danshi".

    hi mr oguri,
it's an honor to be able to write this message for you and i really do hope you could take some time out to read them, as we are all your fans. i would like to commend you for being such a fine actor. i've seen some of your movies or dramas and i hope to see more of it, if not all;l but since i don't speak or understand Japanese, i will have to wait for all of it to be sold @amazon with english translations. you give your fans the reason to fall for your characters not because you tried to play cute but you embody them. you become one with the character you portray and so we think you are Sano or Rui. your eyes speak about the emotions of the scene. you can sense love, pain, anger, and joy just by looking at your eyes. and for me, that's how a good actor is. without any dialogues or body gestures, an actor must be able to say a million words just by the expression of his eyes, and i see that in you. i wish i may say the same about your directorial debut. i'm sorry that i have not seen it yet. i will soon give myself the time to watch them and maybe send you another message about it.
thank you so much for being a sensitive and sensible actor; which gives one an idea about who you are as a person. for me, your eyes and your smile expresses honesty and integrity. you seemed to be a level-headed person, reserved, pleasant, and has a good sense of humor. am i right or ... am i just being a fan? also, thank you for working hard on your every performances, it's always a pleasure watching you in a screen. and lastly, thank you for taking time to read this message...if you do read them; but nonetheless, thank you for just acknowledging that you have fans who cheer for you, who encourage you, and believe in you. thank you for the wonderful experience of watching you act.
    take care and ganbatte kudasai.

Oh btw just wanna share I'm not even sure if I've read it or saw it in an interview, Shun said that after he saw Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels apparently that film inspired him to become a director at 27 because Guy Ritchie was 29 when he directed it.
So when I saw your take on Surely Someday I remembered what he said. :)

    Yang Ik-Jun intro Shun Oguri

    Shun Oguri

    Shun Oguri

Watched "Surely Someday" at this year's PiFan (Puchon International Film Festival). The highlight wasn't the movie itself, but getting an opportunity to see actor and now director Shun Oguri live in person. Yep, Shun Oguri appeared after the screening of the movie for Q&A. Honestly, the atmosphere before his appearance reminded me more of a rock concert - there was a whole lotta excitement in the air (the ratio of women to men at the screening was probably 10:1 in favor of the girls).

How was the movie itself you ask?
There certainly was a palpable feeling of energy, honesty and naiveness which reflects well on the film as it attempts to depict the feelings of a group of youths. With that said, the movie recalls a lot of hip noir'ish films from the recent past like Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels, Pulp Fiction and what not. So in that regard, the movie was hindered by a lack of originality, but it was mostly negated by the energy exhibited by the actors and I'm sure the director. The film set was probably a riot throughout the filming and you can tell the actors had fun. There isn't anything particularly special about the film, outside of the movie being Shun Oguri's directorial debut, but it does provide for fun moments in spurts.
