Sammi Cheng began her career at the early age of sixteen when she won the second runner-up of the 7th New Talent Singing Contest. She went on to become a Queen of Canto Pop in the mid-90s, achieving a prestigious status in the Hong Kong pop music scene and securing a huge and loyal fan base. All her hit songs stay at the top of karaoke charts for months and her ever-changing image makes her a trendsetter in fashion and a pioneer in hair-coloring. She extended her popularity to film when she starred in the youthful romantic comedy Feel 100% and played opposite Stephen Chow in The Lucky Guy. But it was not until 2000 that Sammi blossomed into a film box office wonder when Needing You and Summer Holiday were huge hits all over South East Asia. Her combined box office in Hong Kong for 2000 was over HK$60 million and the VCD release of Needing You received a sold out record of more than 200,000. Sammi's performance in Needing You not only earned her a Best Actress nomination at the Hong Kong Film Awards but also single-handedly ignited the trend of romantic comedies tailored for "office ladies". She continued to perfect this genre in 2001 to 2004, becoming a box office guarantee and an icon and spokeswoman for her specific audience. The 2001 Hong Kong Film Awards acknowledged her status with a record-matching three Best Actress nominations in the same year.
