Plot
Set in present-day China, on the banks of the Yellow River, in Sha'anxi province in the north-west of the country, 'River People' is a simple, empathetic parable contrasting the ambitions of two young boys. Both come from humble fishing families, and are expected to follow family tradition and learn how to become fishermen. But one of them yearns for the big city, the lure of the bright lights proving almost too tempting to bear. The other is content to stay on the river bank. By charting the dreams and aspirations of the two boys, director He Jianjun artfully presents compelling arguments for and against the current seismic shift in China's rapidly expanding industrialization.
