Plot
From director Kwak Ji Kyun comes Portrait of the Days of Youth, a film that took home Korea's prestigious Grand Bell Award for Best Picture in 1991. Also known by the shortened English title, Portrait of Youth, this award-winning motion picture stars Jung Bo Suk, Lee Hye Sook, and Bae Jong Ok. With a screenplay by Jang Hyeon Su, the plot of the film revolves around a young man named Young Hoon, who is distraught when he discovers the startling truth about his first love Jung Nim. It seems she is carrying out an illicit affair with Young Hoon's teacher! Things get worse when he fails to gain entrance into the university he had hoped for, which forces Young Hoon to settle and attend a local college. While attending college, he watches helplessly as his friends and classmates face terrible consequences for their beliefs. In the midst of this chaos, he encounters the ravishing Hae Yeon, a young woman born into a wealthy family. Young Hoon falls in love with her, but circumstances seem to prevent them from truly getting close to one another. They embark on a relationship, but things turn sour at a fancy get-together, which ends up both alienating and isolating Young Hoon. Thanks to these disappointments, he abandons his studies and becomes an aimless wanderer of sorts, leaving love, friendship, and any kind of connection to the past behind him. He also wishes to be reunited with his first love, Jung Nim, whom he had bumped into during his journey back to his old stomping grounds. Eventually, Young Hoon takes up residence at a sleepy country inn. Once there, he meets two strangers, and they become traveling companions. But as they venture out into the world together, they soon learn important lessons about life that ultimately change their outlooks for the better! What's in store for Young Hoon? Find out in Portrait of the Days of Youth, a marvelous, critically acclaimed film about love and life!
