The 1956 musical, “My Fair Lady”, was an adaptation of the 1913 play, “Pygmalion: A Romance in Five Acts”, by George Bernard Shaw, which is just one of many stories of the time based on the idea of transformation within someone. I believe the name Pygmalion originated in Ovid’s “Metamorphoses” from way back in the day. The idea has been around for a while.

Note 1 on 'My Fair Gentleman' is wrong - it is a reverse take on the much better known musical 'My Fair Lady' with Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews - which was made long before the film was made and has been periodically revived as a musical since the film. So it should say 'a gender reversed take on the 1956 (Broadway and London) musical', not 'on the US 1964 film'.
