Bio

Tsai Ming-liang was born in 1957 in Malaysia. He studied drama and film at the Chinese Culture University, Taiwan. Before his debut in the film industry, Tsai was working mainly for theatre, television production, screenwriting and drama education. Tsai met Lee Kang-sheng by chance outside a video game shop and Lee became his favorite actor quickly, even without any formal training in acting. Tsai wrote his debut feature film, Rebels of the Neon God (1992) based on Lee's personality and Lee's role, Hsiao Kang, has been the central character in all subsequent films of Tsai. Tsai won international awards with almost his every feature film including Rebels of the Neon God (1992), Vive L'amour (1994), The River (1996), The Hole (1998), What Time Is It There? (2001) and the latest The Wayward Cloud (2004, HAF 2000 project). As a producer, he produced the directorial debut of Lee Kang-sheng's The Missing (2003). Tsai is currently preparing for his next feature film The Dark Circle.
