Plot
The story begins from a common-looking family picture of a husband, a wife, and a son. They look happy and seem to lead a normal family life. Just as the title Household X implies, this story is about a Japanese family. The family seems like a normal family but they sadly fall apart with time. Nothing seems to be wrong on the surface, but there is a hidden side behind. Ironically, the family’s conflict is not caused by a serious event. The husband’s position in his workplace is unstable because he failed to adapt to the changing digital surroundings. The grown son who’s got recently into his adulthood also has a hard time finding job and has to work as a part-timer. The wife boasts a household managing skill that is almost obsessive compulsive, but nobody acknowledges her effort. The story illustrates the problems that most families have in this overcompetitive world, so the discomfort and eerie feeling seems more realistic. Nobody drinks the water in the water purifier that the wife has bought, leaving it to rot. The audience is induced to wonder if their own families are rotting like the water. -- Kim Se-Jin@JIFF
