Bio
Although he is now one of the leading figures of the new Korean cinema, director Park Chanwook didn’t consider a filmmaking career until he attended university. While studying philosophy at Sogang University, the future director discovered Alfred Hitchcock, founded a film club and fell in love with movies.
He has published several essays of film criticism and made several films, the most prominent of which was the watershed success Joint Security Area (2000), a record-breaking national hit that was also invited to the Berlin International Film Festival’s Competition Section in the year 2000.
Director PARK Chan-wook received domestic and international accolades with his 5th feature film, Oldboy (2003), which won The Grand Prix at the 57th Cannes International Film Festival in 2004, and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005), which won the Young Lion, the Premio CinemAvvenire, and the Best Innovative Award at the 62nd Venice International Film Festival in 2005. He was also invited to the board of jurors at the 63rd Venice International Film Festival in 2006. He is currently preparing for his next project, ‘Evil Live’, which he will both direct and produce. The film will be the darkest and most violent yet from director PARK, and will be released in 2008.
