I've got to admit that when I first stumbled on this film I might've just not given it a second thought until I saw that T.O.P was in it. However, the more I watched, the less that seemed to matter. The performances put out by everybody (not just lead characters) are truly hearbreaking and inspirational. This is the film that caused me to go on to learn more about the Korean War which, as a British citizen, I had never known a great deal about beforehand.
The way this film is made really portrays how tough and gritty the war must have been, and doesn't use too many 'cool' camera angles and special effects to make it seem like an enormous war epic. If anything, the film goes out of its way to appear dark and make the battle scenes as frantic and confusing for the viewer as possible. I was sad to see every character's death, which is no small feat, considering I can watch lead characters die in Hollywood flicks all the time unphased. The climactic battle scene had me on the edge of my seat, hoping that SK forces would get there in time to save the students, or that maybe the students would come up with some way to win. Bear in mind I had limited prior knowledge of the war itself let alone this battle, so in hindsight it was silly of me to expect anything less that for everybody to have died. Regardless, the film really moved me, and the performances put out were top draw! I'd like to see T.O.P act more, I think he has a real knack for it. He managed to sell his role based on his acting rather than the "OHMYGOSH IT'S T.O.P" factor.
The film also managed to show that there was a human side to both of the Koreas in parts, which makes a welcome change to the "AMERICA! FUCK YEAH!" films that saturate the Western market for war films (that's not to say these kinds of films don't exist here, but it is definitely hard to find them).
To sum up the film really surprised me. It made me feel fear, worry and sadness along with the characters due to how human and gritty it was, but it was well made enough to make me feel like it was an epic in a way too. I just hope the fact that one of the leading figures of the "hallyu wave" being part of it can introduce the brilliance of this film to more people around the world, much like it did to me. I'm sure anybody who goes in just as a fan of T.O.P will come out a fan of the film instead.
I'd also like to add (not that I have any power over it) that I sincerely hope that all of the troubles on the Korean peninsula now do not escalate and cause a repeat of this. Let films like this serve as a warning not to Korea, but to the rest of the world how costly these wars can become.

I think this movie is quite a disapointment to me..
The actions are not really realistic, and too predictable...
i dunno, it doesn't actually cut it for me...

Fantastic movie! I really enjoy war movies even if they're not from Hollywood. I also saw the Brotherhood of War (Tae Guk Gi) which is also a South Korean movie, and enjoyed it very much. I've been looking out for Asian movies ever since and turned into an Asian movie freak. It is kind of hard to get a hold of Asian movies here in Holland, but keep them coming anyway.

It is kind of sad to see how many people only want to see this because of T.O.P.. and not because of the significance of the story being told.. or how after watching this any person that breathes would feel so many things... shock.. pain, heart wrenching sadness and dismay.. never in my life of watching films (war related ones included) have I been so deeply affected.. The tears came not 13 minutes into the film.. As far as acting, T.O.P was in the constant shadow of Kwon Sang Woo, Kwon Sang Woo may be known as a pretty boy model with the famous muscle photo that seems viral on the web... but he's an amazing actor who puts a lot of feeling into his performance (his nickname isn't "Mr. Tears" for nothing).. also to people saying negative things without even having seen the film.. are you serious? o_O
Prepare yourself.. if you're some bouncy happy little fan-girl that draws little chibi pictures of T.O.P and BigBang.. don't watch this film.. it'll rip your lace boarded pink heart out and shove it down your throat.. it's the most heart breaking, eye-burning thing I've ever seen.. I know at least during 80% of this film, I had stopped breathing and could only clinch my jaw to make it through many of the scenes..
The saddest part... good luck finding any information about those 71 untrained student soldiers that held off thousands of invading North Koreans for 11 hours.. good luck trying to deal with the unanswered questions... and never forget.. to this day nothing has been signed to end the War.. it's not over.. all there is now is a sort of mutual cease fire.. South Korea is STILL under constant threat from the North.

Great movie period. theres absolutely nothing to add to that sentence. just go and watch it. usually when i watch....european/white people americana movies. i can't sit still for 2 hours. i just can't. i'd pause, do something and watch later. the thing with asian movies is that even though the budget is significanlty smaller. they know how to use it well. and look at this. masterpiece. RECOMMENDATIONS:TAE GUK KI, City of life and death:naking nanking, welcome to dongmakgol. check them out also. all are masterpieaces that are unknowwn to the world

I hope this movie was in cinema here in Philippines..:(
The movie is really awesome. the casts portrayed their characters very well.
Allow me to mention TOP, he really did play well the character of OH JUNG BOM. whenever i look into his eyes while watching movie, i can feel the pain and confusion of OH JUNG BOM..
the extras (soldiers) also did a promising job~♥
Honestly speaking, i agree with the decision of Taewon Ent. of changing cast .Even those two are also promising actors , i think they are not suitable for the characters of Ku Kap-jo and Oh Jung-bom.... my opinion is not clouded by BIAS (TOP)!
To all the people behind the the creation of this movie, GREAT JOB! FIGHTING!!♥
"There's a lot of people who sacrificed their lives (in all countries ) in the past just for us to experience the freedom and peace that we have now. Let us not forget those people even though we don't know their names. They sacrificed themselves for the future generations-for us. We should not forget that!"

I like the way TOP portrayed his role. Kwon Sang Woo is awesome too. It isn't just any regular war movie that you watch. Cinematography is good & watching the film gives me a sense of connection to the emotion & ambiance of the setting being conveyed. This made me want to join the army (LOL), as a military nurse though. Kudos to the cast & crew for such a great movie.

There were a lot more highschool students all over Korea at the time this happened, this event at PoHong just happened to have a little more details and indepth background about what actually happened so the director could accurately make the movie as similar as possible, but other than that, many highschool students had to face what the 71 did.

The movie made me realize how very brutal and intensely chaotic war is. It left me shaking even more upon reflecting on how war has become more effective in killing masses of people. According to Director Lee, it was his goal to show the chaos and the sense of duty over personal rights/safety and he achieved it. It's very timely that I would have the privilege of watching this movie as we remember our fallen soldiers this weekend.

I can't find the history details online; but it looks like these students actually saved the Pusan Perimeter from collapsing! In August of 1950, the issue was still in doubt. The brave students sacrificed their young lives so their country could live. The delay they caused the Communist forces allowed the rest of the army to react successfully to the attack and makea strong defense.
The 71 names ought to be memorized by every student in South Korea!!
There ought to be a park with statues and a chapel. Their photos should be at Cheonan with the other patriots. Schools around the country shouls be named after them.
It's about time these heroes were remembered! And this film should inspire all Koreans to remember with filial love to defend their country and not quarrel over small things.
